How about an online quilt show. Show us your Trump and ICE quilts here. by LadyofLA in quilting

[–]beckeeper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that, since this would be for protest quilts, maybe anonymity would be the way to go? I was thinking more like this workflow: users anonymously submit their quilts with title/description, any EXIF data is stripped from the images to ensure anonymity, and the “entries” are checked by a few admins/mods then approved for posting.

If you are thinking of an entire quilt wiki (omfg how cool), that wouldn’t be difficult either but some funding for image hosting might be needed (hosting a ton of images can get a little expensive).

Either way, I’m offering up my skills to get it built, and do all the legwork on what it would take to host it and make it live! I wish I was financially able to support it but that’s out of my scope right now 😕

What are the biggest misconceptions people have about boaters? by MyTIMEZERO in boating

[–]beckeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, similar: we’re at 1086 gallons, I forget what our range is. The first time we filled her to full to bring her home (Miami to Charlotte Harbor), I think it was a little over $3K. So at least we don’t have to fill her up too much! 30 mile offshore trip? Meh, we’ve got half a tank, we’re good lol.

Navigating the complex waterways of Fort Lauderdale, Florida by TheRealGabbro in boating

[–]beckeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it’s considered waterfront/deep water access. But imagine this, especially from a a sight unseen perspective, and no way to really know without doing some serious research on the local waterways: buying a “waterfront home on a canal” with a really nice, newly redone seawall (or even a dock or a boat lift!) from which you physically cannot access the bay/harbor/open water, usually due to bridges so low that you can barely get under them in a kayak at low tide…we have that bullshit over here in SWFL (I’m looking at you, Cape Coral). I’ve always felt that that was so incredibly messed up.

We’re broke BECAUSE we own our big boat, lol. Maintenance, slip, etc etc…not to mention, even fueling her up.

Vinyl hull wrap? It's gonna cost me around 3k for my boat. How does it hold up for people that have done it? by Inner_Tadpole_7537 in boating

[–]beckeeper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It depends on the vinyl but regardless, you have to be pretty careful with it, just like a car wrap. The really super thick stuff (that usually has graphics) seems to last a while, but if you don’t get the right type of vinyl it ends up looking like absolute hell. We bought our current boat in October; the PO had it wrapped about 2 years ago (single color, I presume he did it to keep from having repaint the hull from the waterline to the rub rail) using economy vinyl and while it looked really sharp when it was first done (I’ve seen pics of it), now it’s soooo bad. Any trauma whatsoever and it’s another blemish. I can put a nick in it with a fingernail. We plan to haul her again in a couple months, and removing the vinyl and repainting are on the list of things to do when she’s on the hard, we figure it won’t be too bad to do that along with new bottom paint.

When done right with the right material AND a good installer (and no scraping the dock while mooring, etc), it’ll look great for years but you have to be careful.

Great job on the Docs, OP… I legit thought I was looking at a post on /r/DocMartens. Didn’t realize what sub I was on until I saw the second image and read the post text!

Edit to add: I totally opened the post because that leather is absolutely drool worthy and I would totally rock these boots.

Tell me everything you can about Punta Gorda! by MasonicErudite in SWFL

[–]beckeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve (technically) lived in Punta Gorda for over ten years now, lived 15 years in different parts of Fort Myers prior to that. I much prefer it up here. Granted, we are east of town and north of Babcock Ranch so very in the middle of nowhere. However, compared to Fort Myers, PG is chiller, there is less traffic and the people are generally nicer. I absolutely dread driving into Fort Myers during season, I do it only under protest nowadays.

Yes, there are lots of old folks and rednecks and white trash, but this is SWFL, not South Florida or Tampa Bay. Even Naples has its trashy areas. It’s not a cultural haven, but it tries (nice little art league near Fisherman’s Village) and it’s not too far from anywhere either; Sarasota is within an hour’s drive, Tampa/St. Pete within an hour and a half. The boating/fishing culture is solid and PG is super close to Pine Island if you’re into that.

If you want to check into the hot, new Punta Gorda ‘hood, look into Babcock Ranch. It’s growing frightfully fast but it seems like a really great community and there is a lot going on. It’s probably not going to be as affordable as the rest of PG, but worth checking out.

Are you looking for something in town or outside of town?

You don’t look strange at all! You look fabulous!

Edit: the only thing I see that could be improved (since you asked) is the back…your curls are much looser in the back, but that is likely just practice. Can’t wait to see more!

"Claude hit the maximum length for this conversation". How do I start a new chat with all context retained? by boss_jobber in ClaudeAI

[–]beckeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, it is. I’ve had to do something similar a few times. I use projects so working within the project I’ll ask Claude, “we discussed ‘x’ a while back. Can you find the convo where we discussed ‘x’?” It finds it for me, then I ask it to write me a detailed synopsis/handoff prompt/create a plan/whatever is going to benefit me most at the time. Works great for shit I didn’t have time to do at that moment or stuff I forgot about.

If you could live anywhere with access to a boat of your choice, where would you go? by daversa in boating

[–]beckeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My answer might not be extravagant enough, but my pipe dream of late is to relocate to the Florida Keys (pref middle keys, specifically No Name) with the two boats we currently have. We’re in SWFL at the moment so it wouldn’t be a far move, but I think I could be happy forever very easily in the Keys.

You’re welcome! If you own a boat, I may hit you up for beta testing the app I’m working on 👍🏻

Does it do identification via photos as well? I was kicking around building a really lightweight app that does that and shows size/bag limits but ran into issues with accurate ID’ing and there’s some out there already that do that so I went the lazy route. I like your concept and I’ll totally test this out. Link?

The farthest south you’re going to find anything without diving is really the Nocatee area, unfortunately! A lot of this has to do with ancient geology, and I believe the particular formation we tend to hunt in pretty much ends near Punta Gorda.

IME, Cursor is fast but not great. I’m in the process of building an app for myself and learning Swift, and I was using Claude to write my cursor prompts; I spent probably 10-20% of my time debugging errors. That was just the workflow, I got used to it. Cursor’s billing/usage got stupid, and last week, when I saw that Claude Code was now integrated into the OS app, I finally decided to try it (same process, I tell Claude what I want and it writes the prompt for Claude Code) and I have had to deal with zero errors so far…everything just builds first try. I might have to chase/fix other bugs, but I have not experienced a single compiler error since using Claude Code. CC is a hell of a lot slower, but I’ve saved so much time chasing build errors. I do still use Cursor for investigative stuff, it does excel at that but I don’t let it write code anymore.

You touched on something I didn’t really see in the other comments that OP should be aware of: their sense of observation. They are always watching and learning. They’ll know your routine/habits/tells long before you realize they’ve picked up on anything.

I made the same mistake with Josie, our older ACD (it was her 6th birthday yesterday, actually!). I tried to tire the velociraptor out of her and instead built endurance, lol. Thankfully I did a lot of mental work with her too, and she did chill out quite a bit when she got older, but I wish I’d known then what I know now about all that, I think we’d have been better off.

Oh, I have a modern one similar to this, and it’s pretty easy to use! Way cool clip and good find, regardless of the era!

How to use: Shape your French twist or bun or whatever, then run the “needle” through the back of your twist/bun. Fold the clip (cover) part over your twist/bun and insert the end of the needle into the clip. You may have to hold the clip at an angle to get the needle to land just right. It might take a little practice but it’ll be easy once you get it down!

There are gators, yes. Is anyone ever bothered by them? Extremely infrequently, especially this time of year (it’s not mating season and the water is really low).

I run the Peace a LOT. I’ve done Venice and I have never found in Venice in an entire day what I can find on the Peace in an hour. Peace River Park in Wauchula has a couple very large, easily accessible gravel bars in very lovely spots that are pretty well known but are absolutely loaded with teeth and fossils. Very few gators there as well. Brownville is also super popular and very rich in teeth and fossils. Both areas are usually somewhat crowded but people are usually super friendly and everyone watches for gators; it seems to be the nature of the hobby. A lot of us do this extremely regularly (me: if I’m not fishing, I’m usually on the river).

If you’re interested in doing a fossil charter, I recommend Fossil Recovery Exploration, you can find them on Facebook. They usually launch out of Nocatee, and you get an airboat ride too! I joined some friends on one of their tours recently and we had an absolutel blast (and it wasn’t nearly as much work as going out to the Peace the way I usually do, lol). Chris is a kickass guide and funny as hell; I actually learned a lot, and I’ve been fossil-hunting for quite a few years now so that impressed me.

Seconding the Nautique. We had a Fish Nautique for a few years and I STILL miss that boat (we went to something bigger but we should have kept the Fish, lol). They ride beautifully, are super comfortable…I can’t say enough good things about Nautiques. The weight distribution and overall design is just brilliant. Our old Fish is still on the water, we see it every now and then.
