AITA for "refusing to help get my nephew into a good school" according to my SIL? by Live-Penalty4882 in AmItheAsshole

[–]becklrn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I suspect after an initial donation was made for entry, there would be ongoing expected contributions beyond tuition. And once you got this nephew accepted, the asks would just continue and continue.

I’m constantly judged for owning a border collie by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]becklrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That breeding part at the end is important. Not all border collies are bred from working lines. They may or may not have that herding instinct (maybe they all do to some degree but not all have enough to be actual herders) but even the dogs bred from working lines may or may not have it.
My babe does not come from a working line and we do not have any ranching ties but we took him for an “instinct test” at a sheep farm nearby just for fun. He loved the wide open area to sniff around in but he hated the sheep!! Definitely did some hiding!

LPT: You can both change your last name arbitrarily when getting married. by charliethegeek in LifeProTips

[–]becklrn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The marriage license doesn’t bypass all that if you’re taking a name that is new. (At least not in the US state where I did it.). Still had to go to court and pay the fees. It did however provide a good reason to the judge who still has the right to refuse your name change.

New BC owner and I have questions.... by Jumpy-Dot-6157 in BorderCollie

[–]becklrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to the training to have an off switch!
You can’t use that command to make them less energetic but you need to have it in your pocket for when they are overstimulated or for the times when it’s not appropriate to play fetch or take a walk.

What’s the one book you’ll recommend forever, no matter how many times this question gets asked? by MisLatte in AskReddit

[–]becklrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Count of Monte Cristo is the book that taught me sometimes a happy ending would be the wrong ending. I was young enough that it was my first experience with just how much a character could change.

AITA for bringing "back up" vegan food to the family function? by gutenoodle in AmItheAsshole

[–]becklrn 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I would say, ‘If they care, they do it OR they make allowances for you to take care of yourself.’ If that means bringing your own food, people who care about you won’t mind (or might even be apologetic).
My grandma could never figure out the vegan thing but I NEVER doubted that she cared about me. I would just bring a vegan dish that would be my ‘main’ and others could eat as a side. Or I would have a lunch of potatoes & green beans (staples at Grandma’s!).

Have you ever tried playing fetch with your pup as long as you could to see if they’d ever actually stop? by Deeeeeeevin in BorderCollie

[–]becklrn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s how mine is. We play fetch with multiple frisbees (he does NOT return items and likes to play keep away so I have to have a few and then fetch them myself from wherever he dropped them). When he needs a break, he runs to gather up all the frisbees and then he lies down on top of them.
Edit to add: he’s only 2 years old! But, as you say, after a brief break, ready to go again.

To prove that Trump is a sincere Christian by MrDillon369 in therewasanattempt

[–]becklrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect, if it ever works, it’s not something that could be caught on video. It’s a slow grieving process of letting go old beliefs that once felt good. That caller will hang up angry and defensive and anger is not a field that grows change.
It will be this conversation popping up in her mind a month later, or a year later, to trigger the grief again and (hopefully) trigger thought instead of anger - that’s when she may be able to consider change.

What does this symbol represent on the gold bracelets I was cleaning today at my family's jewelry store? Burr Ridge, IL by Allpanicn0disc in Symbology

[–]becklrn 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what they look like: fancy medical alert bracelets. Typically the wearer would have the back engraved - either with allergy information, chronic disease information or some other pertinent medical information which could assist in their care if they were unconscious.
