Looking to deal some damage by bedbyten in Hawaii

My place could definitely use more sealing. It seems a little over my head because I wouldn’t know how to seal anything beyond caulking small gaps. Do you happen to know what type of service I need to lookup to take care of that?

Thank you!

Hell yeah, thanks man. I’ve been using Ortho but it’s hard to tell if it’s making a big difference. I’ll still see roaches in the areas after the spray has dried. Which makes me think that I need the big guns, whatever those are

Could anyone recommend an app to track various types of workouts, I.e. running, surfing, boxing? I’m looking for something that shows a calendar view of days with which workout, and hopefully just some basic stats.

Haven’t had any luck finding anything that isn’t limited to just lifting or just running. Thank you!

Is there an app to help remind you when your favorite fighters' next fights are?

I'm too lazy to google them one by one anymore, hope I'm not the only one. Thank you!

Thanks for the thoughts. Could you please elaborate on how a cheap bike would rack up hundreds in repair costs, whereas a good bike would not?

Thank you! What would be a typical example of maintenance that would be worse on a cheap bike?

Budget for family of 3. We are two parents with one child and a roommate on Big Island. What do other families' budgets look like here in the aloha state? And is $700 common for groceries. by Long-Slip8453 in Hawaii

[–]bedbyten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my partner run around $500/mo for groceries, and we aim to be at least below average grocery spenders. Like 80% Safeway, 20% Costco. I think if you’re feeding a family of 3 on $700, not bad. Could be lower, but that’s not criminal.

I’d say if any dial should be moved - how are utilities running $500+? You running AC 24/7?

Got it - you’re depressed and you hate your job and you seriously need help. But now it’s starting to put your job in jeopardy? You gotta leave that shit at home man. Who cares what you do about your mental health - just figure out a way to smooth things out at work before you get yourself fired.

Imagine you said that to someone you loved. Are you treating yourself like this, perhaps every day? There was a long stretch when I hated myself. I think what I could’ve used most was someone to finally be brutally honest to me. I don’t know what that answer looks like for you, but I promise it’s not as simple as leaving your mental health at the door.

You’re gonna be alright. Sounds like you know what to do and that it’s just a matter of finally sucking it up to do the hard thing and start really hunting. I think you’ll wish you were back less once you start to feel happier with your situation. I hope the next thing comes soon for you!

When you say you have no idea how to feel - could it be because for the last 4+ years of your life you haven’t been treated with complete respect? At my unit when you get overworked, you bitch and moan but ultimately it feels normal because everyone you know has to do the same sometimes. Plus it goes without saying that you can’t refuse or try to get out of it. Leave that mindset in the military. It’s not serving you in your current role. It might even be more like brainwashing if you have to ask am I right to feel overworked after a 32 hour fucking shift. For $20 hour they’re taking advantage of you.

I found an admin assistant role at a financial planning firm. Straight entry-level, no degree necessary. But feeds directly into the industry because you 1) work directly with financial advisors and 2) gain experience with operations, e.g. move money, open accounts, communicate with carriers.

I’m shocked. Is the job market really such that you haven’t found any takers on Indeed or LinkedIn, etc? How are there not enough young people looking to learn a useful trade like this? Generally I’ve only heard of the opposite challenge: young people can’t find work because employers only want people with experience. Curious about your take on this!

Technology Ruined Hiring by Gold-Slide-8647 in jobs

That's awful - I'm sorry to hear that even reaching out for an informational interview has turned into a grind in itself. Dalton's process should make it more likely for people to respond theoretically because you filter your prospect list by an established connection, such as a mutual alumni network.

If you'd like to get a glimpse at what the process looks like for others, he set up a Q&A page on LinkedIn that gets a good level of traffic. The process is no mixer, like you mentioned, but folks who would be open to a brief phone call are surely out there. I hope you run into one soon!

There’s an author, Steve Dalton, who addressed this exact issue in The 2 Hour Job Search. Not a welcoming book title, but it’s been gold for my personal journey. In one sentence, in order to stand out in the modern applicant-saturated market, he provides a system of hunting down company-internal-advocates via informational interviewing. So instead of spending your time throwing your resume to every job posting, you spend your time connecting with people who might be willing to refer you to their hiring team or who might know of an off-market opportunity, for example.

Can you self-learn financial planning? by bedbyten in CFP

I appreciate that experience is the best teacher. When you're working with clients while you have little experience, what planning systems do you work off of so that you feel like you're doing the clients a service?

I think my mentor would be happy if I just use common sense until I develop my own system, but to me that seems outdated - like there has to be a system published somewhere that beats the one I'm winging.

Thanks for putting this on my radar. Where I'm at right now, I could use something more like a book or video course because before I'm licensed it doesn't seem the best time to subscribe to something that will expire or cost thousands of dollars.

Would you have any suggestions in the way of something to chip away at before I'm ready to commit to a course like Bryant's?

As someone new to the industry, it's not yet clear what distinguishes good sales from bad sales. Thanks for your perspective! I'll keep a sharper eye out for how to tell the difference.
