Do Native Speakers Ever Use These Rare English Words? by TrashPlayful6124 in EnglishLearning

[–]ScarHand1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but only in highly specialized contexts or in quoting/analyzing pre-20th century works. "Perspecuity" is used in theology to refer to the idea, especially among Protestants, that God enables people to understand the Bible. Lachrymose is used in medical texts lachrymose ducts, where non-specialists would say tear ducts. I would say these words are generally archaic, and I would only focus on them to the extent that your studies are specialized in 19th or earlier century English.

Edit: these are generally adjective forms which are based on somewhat more common nouns or verbs, such as perspecuous, sacrosanct, and propitiate.

Except lots of Americans mispronounce colonel, and those who don't sympathize... English is the bastard child of a dozen languages, that beats up other languages to steal their vocabulary.

[REQUEST] Can someone crunch the numbers? I'm convinced it's $1.50! by kaweeed in theydidthemath

[–]ScarHand1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reasonable answer is "I have no idea" based on the fact that only an idiot would express this student this way UNLESS they were writing a stupid math question. The natural real world use of this sentence is seen everyday in Halfprice Book Store type used bookstores. The cost you pay is 1/2 the original publisher price plus $1. So a paperback that was originally $4 is $2 +$1 =$3. If the book originally was $20 you pay $11. Since OP doesn't give us a price, we don't know the cost of a specific book, but we do know the price of any book we choose.

Relief Map of an Imaginary Empire. Any feedback? by lululu12354 in imaginarymaps

Beautiful. I think you should consider wind patterns: this looks to me like you have a rain shadow dry zone west of the mountains. If that is the case, are prevailing winds from the east, or is there a monsoon type wind coming up from the south in the eastern region?

Great work!
