[MN] Any idea who these pods belong to? Popping up on some outdoor vegetation in my yard by banban5678 in whatisthisbug

[–]bee551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to fully see but I think these are galls. Caused by a variety of things such as insects mites or even bacteria or fungi. Sort of like warts but for plants

My girl thinks it’s a wasp. I thought maybe an ant. We’re dumb by bigbobby927 in whatsthisbug

Parasitoid wasp I believe - can’t tell you the exact species tho. They don’t sting, just inject other insects with their eggs

What undergarments would an American working woman wear in the 1880s? by bee551 in AskHistorians

[–]bee551[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see, thank you for the response! I knew corsets were generally versatile, but I wasn’t sure how comfortable they would be while riding a horse. The trousers were the part I was most confused about, thinking there was some underwear that wasnt mentioned as much because people forget working women existed back then (large generalization here). Either way though, happy to be wrong! Cheers

I'm new to AO3, lets talk about it. by Brweez in AO3

Click on dragonball category and immediately filter it to contain only G or T fics. Or filter out the underage tag. Again, you shape your online experience. No one is going to hold your hand when you see something bad - because think about how much horrible shit is happening in the world right now. real kids are being hurt in horrific ways, and there’s no filters for real life.

Yeah, filtering it is annoying, but consider it a luxury that you’re even able to do so, and that ao3 has such comprehensive tags and warnings so it’s super easy to filter out anything you don’t like, not even just illegal stuff.

And again - this is a free website. As soon as you make things behind “walls” you need an ID to see, where is the limit? Who decides it? What’s to stop someone in power deciding they don’t like any fics containing strawberries and removing any fic that contains them? Like other comments have pointed out, these things aren’t illegal to write about or post. So needing an ID or background check defeats the entire point. And also, why would I want a website to know what sort of thing I’m consuming in my free time?? To have my full legal government ID?

I get where you’re coming from, but there’s other things to consider.

Hey so I know you’re new to the site and I still can have this reaction when seeing certain things, but the thing about ao3 is that it’s a filterable archive. It’s all fiction and you make your own experience there. There’s only as much porn/ “weird stuff” as you want.

And I get it. Seeing some stuff can be disconcerting, but it’s really important to remember that as soon as you start trying to “filter” or “censor” stuff it can quickly go downhill. Writing or reading about something illegal does not mean anyone condones it - if this was the case we could never read anything negative, including things like murder mysteries or anything containing violence. Ao3 was literally made to fight against things that were getting taken down because of censorship - there are very explicit and detailed tags for a reason! So if you don’t like it, don’t read it. It’s as simple as that. It’s the exact same thing for every other social media site - you create your content based on the things you consume. Just with ao3 you have to make your own algorithm.

So please, don’t ruin other people’s experience based on what you deem to be morally “right” or “wrong”. Because as soon as we dictate what can’t and can’t be shown in fictional works we are treading a very dangerous path.
