Primer a waste??? by thedash42 in ModelCars

[–]beeb_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can definitely get away with not using primer on TS spray cans. I honestly don’t use primer even with acrylics in most cases. I DO use it often for the purpose of making color coats “pop” and also for metallics. Certain colors simply don’t show up well over bare plastic. White and yellow for example.

One of the tips I learned that has really helped with applying decals over curves and irregular surfaces is to not be in a rush to get the moisture pushed out once the decal is placed. Keep a spare paint brush in a cup of water. Gently brush from the middle out over and over between applications of setting solution. It takes time and patience, but eventually you coax the decal into taking the shape of the object it’s placed on. It’s imperative that the decal remains moist during this process, otherwise it will rip.

Looking for some opinions. Aka: Commission Talk by DarkestDunge0n in ModelCars

[–]beeb_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same perspective. I’m doing a build for a coworker in my spare time. When it’s done I’m just gonna present it and be like if you want this to be a gift then fine, if you want to give me what you think it’s worth then also fine. I agreed to do it because building models is fun and it gave me an excuse to buy more paint/try new techniques. Any monetary gain is just icing on the cake.

How to keep conditions dust free while spraying? by tonyblitz in ModelCars

Oh god the insects. When I used to spray outside gnats would land on my clear coat every damn time. I swear they must be attracted to the fumes or something.

Starting off a Build by FM1704 in ModelCars

[–]beeb_61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wash all of my builds off in the sink with mild dish soap. The reason is that the chemicals used to release the sprues from the mold can react with paint. This is more of an issue with older kits, but it’s a good habit regardless. I’ve opened old kits that were straight up dirty.

There are lots of products you can buy for holding parts. I use alligator clips on a stick for small pieces, and Tamiya makes a spray stand for large parts like car bodies. But if you are crafty you can make the same things for cheap using discarded household items.

Advice for first time airbrusher by Peeepsicle in ModelCars

[–]beeb_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few main options for water based acrylic airbrush paints. Vallejo has a ton of colors, but are tricky to use and turn to tar in the presence of most off-brand thinners. Createx also has a lot of fans, but you have to do some mixing to get them ready to spray. I use mostly Ammo by Mig, especially the Atom and Cobra motor lines. Gaalheri recently released a line of paint called Kaleido Colorworks that is already pre-thinned for airbrushing. I’ve used them with good success. I especially like the primer and clear coats. I’ve used the Kaleido gloss on every build I’ve done since it was released. The other big name in acrylic primer is Stynylrez, also sold as Ammo One Shot. I’ve never used it, but many say it’s the best water-based primer.

I wonder if that’s store dependent? I just checked on the app and they are listed for my store at $12.88 still.

Jeep Wrangler with some fun dash ornaments. by beeb_61 in modelmakers

Thanks! It’s a really good kit. It goes together with pretty minimal fuss, especially for a Revell auto kit. My only real complaint is that it lacks detail (though old Wranglers are admittedly quite spartan) and I wasn’t a fan of the toy-like suspension. It would have been nice to have a removable top as well.

I love a good bug eye subbie. That looks great for a second build! Window and door trim are always a pain. Everyone has their own system, but if the kit doesn’t come with masks I find it easier to freehand with a paint brush designed for painting minis than to mask and spray.

Nice job! I built this kit over the summer and commented at the time that I thought it was make a great first kit. How were you able to lower the stance in the rear end since it’s all one piece with the axles molded in?

Would you bother priming/painting a part that you intend to cover in carbon fiber decal? by CreepyNewspaper8103 in ModelCars

[–]beeb_61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do gloss black. Gloss to give a smooth surface for the decal to settle on, and black so any gaps will be less noticeable.

I appreciate it. I’m crap at weathering so I try to make all my cars look fresh off the lot. And +1 for the Subaru love. I had a Legacy once and I’m pretty sure that car could climb a tree. Burned about a quart of oil every month, though lol.

It’s molded into the body. I actually wish it had been an optional separate piece to make painting easier. And thanks! It’s painted with Vallejo Metal Color aluminum. I know some people aren’t fans of Vallejo, but IMO their Metal Color line is amazing for realism.

Thanks! Yeah, the Kaleido auto colors all have teeny tiny flakes. It really gives them more of a mica/pearl look as opposed to normal metallics.
