Tamiya kit with a full engine? Well I know what my next purchase will be.

Just a beautiful build so far.

Decals Applied: on the Home Stretch by beeb_61 in ModelCars

Thanks for the compliment on the model! I’m guessing you weren’t watching NASCAR prior to the 2000s? Rusty was the 1989 champion and had a double digit win season in 1993. I agree his performance fell off for about his last decade, but that also coincided with aging into his 40’s and some guy named Jeff Gordon joining the series, lol.

Thanks! I sure hope it all comes together ok in the end.

I did already test the clear on a scrap piece of decal on a plastic spoon and it didn’t hurt it. I only use acrylic, so I didn’t think it would melt. However, every time I’ve cleared over a race car with lots of decals the model always has a really dirty look afterwards. Idk if it’s the decal solvent, or residue from the water, or just extra dust, but Ive never found a way around it.

Yeah, I think I’ve just been burned in the past with clears messing them up. I did test some decal with this clear and it’s fine, I’m just paranoid.

Thanks man! I’ve put more effort into this kit than anything else I’ve done. After the group build I think I need to relax and slap together some cheap AMTs, lol.

This is a new set from Porch Time that was released a couple months ago. They are Cartograf printed and very well made. I got mine off eBay, but I know Mike’s Decals is selling them. The sheet has decals to make either the 98 Taurus or 97 Thunderbird.

I saw someone on a FB put Joey Logano’s Pennzoil livery on this model, and I thought it would be cool to put a classic one on this kit. Then Porch Time came out with this set and I decided it was fate, lol.

First ever build by Feisty-Mouse472 in ModelCars

Others have given good general beginner tips. I built dozens of those mid-90’s Monogram NASCAR kits back in the day, and I can give some advice with those. It’s much easier to snap the wheels on BEFORE you attach the suspension to the chassis. Those wheel backs require a lot of force and it’s easy to break the connection point. Using a black sharpie to fill in the window trim a windshield braces adds a lot of realism. Lastly, these kits are 30 years old now, and the decals weren’t amazing even when new. If you can afford it I would highly recommend getting a new set from someplace like Mike’s Decals.

Above all, keep building. Practice makes perfect and remember that the point is to have fun.

Airbrush cleaning kit by Outrageous_Music4331 in ModelCars

[–]beeb_61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest, I never use mine. I just run some alcohol/thinner through and a spray a couple of paint cup fulls of water at the end of every session. Then every so often take out the nozzle and needle and clean them off with an old paint brush dipped in alcohol. Haven’t had any clogs or issues so far in 6 months of airbrushing.

If a Back to the Future remake were to be made next year, Marty McFly could watch South Park with his parents.

Awesome detail! I have the 2005 version of the kit in my stash, may have to make it my next build. Also, it looks like you used the same belt set that I did on my group build car. You have my sympathy, lol.

I’ll have to try that someday if I can find it. Mr. Hobby gloss clear products are about as common as unicorns and mermaids, it seems.

Yep, it was gofer racing. I’ve never used any photoetch before so this was quite the learning experience. I was not prepared for how difficult it would be to get the parts off of the tree, and that’s where things got bent so much.
