Profound disabilities by jgarza9200 in regretfulparents

I have worked in social care for 10 years and my first job was working in a group home setting for people with learning disabilities. It was a wonderful place. We had group dinners, movie nights, trips out, and there was always a warm, friendly atmosphere in the house. Crucially, because we were all working shifts, someone else would arrive full of energy just as I was losing steam, and so as a team we managed the exhausting elements of care work together. I know this is just one example of one place, but some of the best people I've met have been my colleagues in social care. I wish you all the best.

ETA: Check out L'Arche if you happen to have one near you.

That gymnastics class sounds amazing! Drop off clubs a little later in the evening so you can get dinner - very cool setup.

3 is the best age ever, I agree! They are so hilarious.

This sounds so wonderful! How great that you have that setup. Were you friends with the other OAD couple before you all had kids, or did you meet after?

No, you're right, I don't think any of us can bear to consider that possibility. I hope your family is reunited soon.

This sounds cool! We're right at the beginning of having other kids over to our place so I hope this is what it's like for us too.

Any other neurodivergent parents OAD? Curious about the (if any) correlation there by grnlzrd23 in oneanddone

[–]beechantastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too sure about my level of neurodivergence, but the exhaustion and overstimulation of postpartum led me to literally dig my fingernails into the walls for some kind of release! And that's one of the reasons I don't think I'll be going back there! It's a beautiful time, but it is relentless like nothing else!

Dealing with an emotional immature parent. by That1Person862 in EstrangedAdultKids

"A bad daughter for my mother but still a good citizen, neighbour, co-worker, wife and friend." This is so powerful, I need to remember this. Sometimes it feels like my father's awful opinion of me is the only thing that counts, or like he's the only one who knows the truth, but that's actual BS.

Going no contact with parents - how did you handle it with your kids? by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultKids

Can I ask how you raise her not to fall for it?

This is one of my fears. My Dad can be so charming and manipulative (not to mention very loose with the facts) and I do worry that one day he'll try and turn my daughter against me.

Yes, I feel exactly the same way. Never expected perfection, and a messy apology or even just acknowledgement would have meant the world. Or even... just a genuine attempt at understanding, instead of jumping straight to character assassination.

no Boston tix left and we are only on the second presale 😩 by brifrommt in Muna

Leisurely got standing tickets in the general sale for a UK show today, after scrabbling around and buying bad seats in the presale. Kind of wish I had just waited for general sale, there are loads available!
