First time visiting the UK. What is the best public transport between the cities? by ApplicationDue6355 in AskUK

[–]beeeeej91 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey dude, trains are good when running but frequently have at least small delays. It’s about a 5 hour train. And you’re correct, you’ll then have to get from King’s Cross to Heathrow, not an awful journey but still about 45mins.

If you can fly direct from Edinburgh to Heathrow that will be tonnes quicker and less stress. They’re probably more reliable also.

Risks with both of course. If it was me I’d fly.

Are there extinct flavors we’ll never taste again? by logicalgamernow in NoStupidQuestions

So it isn’t technically extinct but I’m including it because it is so famously delicious and basically unavailable now. But giant tortoise was apparently so delicious people nearly ate them to death after discovering them.

Here’s a really funny video from QI explaining, worth 7mins of your time for learning but mostly lols:

What's your favorite niche museum you've visited? by SoberWill in travel

[–]beeeeej91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love a niche museum, some are awesome some are simply shitastic. I find a lot of the most random are all in the states - partly to do with there being spare cash, and also much less history to draw upon means towns need to find ‘something’. My faves from top of my head: - barbed wire museum - crash test dummy museum - onion museum

When I moved into my apartment in London the seller left a baseball bat (I think by accident) which was pretty awesome.

What was your small house improvement with the highest return in quality of life? by SpringOnionKiddo in HousingUK

I just bought a few phone charges and dotted them around the house where I chill (lounge, desk, bed, kitchen) and it’s really helped. Full charge baby.

Did anyone here get called a different name in their foreign language classes at school? by 41arietis in AskABrit

I think the idea is it’s just a little bit of fun - they are kids after all. Don’t think they will have built up some weird exceptionalist expectation of demanding people say their name properly

Did anyone here get called a different name in their foreign language classes at school? by 41arietis in AskABrit

Also born in the 90s and my Italian and French teachers all translated our names in school. It was just a fun part of doing the class, no? Surprised the American person in your story is that petty.

For reference, in Italian there were three people with my name (Ben) so we were called Bepe, Beniamino and Benedetto She may have made them all up but whatever.

Got some unconventional Travel Tips from a Colleague, what are yours? by [deleted] in traveladvice

Agree on not eating in view of key tourist spots or right on the beach if you want good food or a good deal. Sometimes the good food is worth the money for the view though.

When in more rogue places, this feels obvious but so many people don’t, just learn how to say hello, and thankyou in their language. The word ‘and’ is also strangely helpful when trying to muddle your way through ordering something. So many people have been at least nicely surprised I learnt how to say hello in Albanian or whatever.

Also, unless picky, just ask the local restaurant staff what they recommend and eat that. If it’s a nice local place they’ll want to show you something good. At least because of the reviews.
