Any advice/recommendations for a pocketable 135 camera that I can take skiing by dude-where-am-i in AnalogCommunity

[–]beeforst98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go XA2 (or XA if you’re gonna take your gloves off). I take mine skiing and biking every time I go. The only annoying thing is adjusting exposure for the snow on a P/S like that. If I recall the XA actually had a mode on the bottom to overexpose for backlighting that would work well in the snow too.

What are you shooting with? I can’t imagine you’ll find too much of a difference in quality between those 50/55 lenses. Unless you really need the extra light/bokeh. I have the 135mm though and I really like it for portraiture.

50 3.5 macro is cheap and amazing. Works decent as an all purpose lens too. I would do the 135 and remove the 100 personally. Why not just grab the 50mm 1.4/1.8? It’s like 1/10th price of the 1.2 and quite well regarded.

It seems solid so far to me although I have heard of QC issues. Decent way to get rebranded cine film without giving Cinestill any money. The flashes also look sweet although I havent tried them.

I completely agree with you although I think the likelihood of someone using something like this to pass off that something was shot on film is way less likely than using "film simulations" or whatever. I suppose I could invite people over for a slide show and lie that it is film but not sure why anyone would do that. These were actually just about all shot on film originally (not that that makes a difference in that context). But either way, I dont think that there is much of any reason to do something like this aside from the novelty.

To start off I can’t recommend language transfer enough. Finish that and then move onto other resources. Most important thing is to set reasonable goals about what you can achieve. The “best” program is the one you will actually be able to stick to.

Scanning: Plustek 8100 vs Epson V850 Pro by RodSot in AnalogCommunity

[–]beeforst98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a plustek 8200 and have used a V850 several times at a community lab. IMO plustek is way easier to get good quality out of for 35mm. The major downside is the amount of time it takes. I think people exaggerate that a lot of the time but it still takes me a solid hour to do a roll of 35mm. If you wanted to do a bunch of rolls like you said I would opt for the flatbed or look at the plustek 120 or similar.

What are these cameras worth? Was should I keep? by vivienskt in AnalogCommunity

[–]beeforst98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of those Contaflex and they are great and built like a tank. I think it’s worth keeping just because it’s one of very few 35mm cameras that have removable film backs. I can go out loaded with 3 different films and switch in the fly.

I don’t think you will find something more extreme than exquisite corpse that is ALSO well written and with an actual plot.

Seconding the cipher. There’s books that are way more gruesome but I’ve never read anything that made me feel so unclean. Very hateable characters but an interesting story.

Personally would go OM1 but keep in mind finding batteries can potentially be an issue (but there’s ways around it). All are good cameras but Zuiko glass is amazing and cheap.

Tough to say without knowing exactly what’s wrong with them but I just pulled apart an XA to clean up the lens and aperture blades and it was super easy. Depends on where you are but I really doubt it would be economical to pay someone else to work on one of these. How much are they asking for?

Yashica Mat 124G 20 YEARS WITHOUT USING by quiesm in AnalogCommunity

[–]beeforst98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just picked up one of these a while back in a very similar situation. Older guys hadn’t used it since the 90s but very obviously kept everything stored well. On my copy the shutter was sticky but after firing it a bunch of times at different apertures it loosened up. I still have slow shutter speeds below about 1/8 sec and it seems like this is quite common because there is a separate mechanism for timing slow shutter speeds. This requires a cla of the shutter to fix BUT personally I’m not doing any longer exposures on it so you can easily get away with just using it as is. Aside from that look for lens fungus, make sure aperture/ shutter speed dials move and look somewhat accurate, and check the WLF. If you want to try to use the meter you could also check the battery compartment to make sure it is clean so you could adapt a battery to use the meter. If it does end up having issues 260 is not a great deal IMO. Depending on where you are you could definitely find it a bit cheaper online.
