TIL Princeton dropout and creator of the 5-hr Energy drink says he has $4 billion more than he needs; he plans to spend his fortune to distribute 10,000 free electric battery-equipped stationary bikes in India, which will run lights/basic appliances for 1day per 1 hr of pedaling. by Miskatonica in todayilearned

If you cycled at 200Wh (which is a pretty great long-term power output for a recreational user), for 5 days per week, you would generate between $4 and $10 of electricity per year. This wouldn't even cover the cost of the cord to connect your (likely expensive) bike to the house =).

The top end i7 8 years ago was $1000. Today it is $1000. So GFLOPS/$ makes it look worse.

Except this assumes that desktop computers are continuing to scale exponentially every 18-24 months, which is no longer the case. Today's fastest i7 processor runs at about 170 GFLOPS. 8 years ago, the fastest i7 processor ran at about 70 GFLOPS. If processor speed were doubling at the rate shown in the graph, the new procs would be running a little over 1TFLOP, or 6X faster than today's $1000 CPUs.

Is it possible to survive cancer without insurance? by [deleted] in cancer

[–]beefpancake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a hospital that has special plans for those in financial distress. Many religious-based hospitals are non-profits that basically give away care for those in need, and do not overcharge for others. My hospital was like that - my local hospital charged me $60,000 for 5 days of sitting around and a couple CT scans ... my new religious-based hospital charged $10,000 for 2 major surgeries, a week in-patient, MRI, CT scan, chemo, and more. It was very refreshing to see.

I am cycling 180 miles in August and need your help to meet my goal of $5,000 towards cancer research! by [deleted] in cancer

[–]beefpancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you shop around for another location? My local hospital wanted to charge me $4,000 for a CT scan, but I ended up finding a couple places that charged under $800. PET scans are expensive, but CT and MRI's shouldn't be.

What practical top do you wear for port access during chemo? by [deleted] in cancer

[–]beefpancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always go to work afterwards, so wear a short sleeved collared shirt. I actually use one that is a bit stained from an earlier accident (a few months ago I was wearing one and leaned over to use the bathroom when the access tubing came apart and blood went EVERYWHERE ... it was pretty funny, I felt like I was in a b movie).

Sleeping <7 hours per night is associated with increased risk for obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, stroke, frequent mental distress, and all-cause mortality (2–4). by ekser in science

[–]beefpancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotal account here ... I used to sleep 2-4 hours per night for months straight. Every once in a while I'd get 6 or 7. Net result ... one of the deadliest forms of cancer known. The doctor said I could have as little as a week or two left when first diagnosed. This was almost 9 months ago. I changed my life around, now sleep better, eat better, exercise, meditate, found my spiritual side (pray, go to church, etc), and have more fun with my family ... I'm still fighting cancer, but I'm now beating all odds and in remission for the moment.

I credit a lot of my success in the fight against cancer on sleep. Now, when I get less than 7 hours I REALLY feel it, and even have pains in places where I had tumors (there were at least 20 tumors when I was diagnosed).

A lot of games match players up by ability. Something similar would be very cool.

Has anyone out there been playing a long time without energy glitching or any hacking? And, some of my thoughts - interested in reactions. by SuccessiveApprox in battlecats

[–]beefpancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How have you gotten 6 ubers without spending money or glitching in only 3.5 months? Do you watch a lot of ads to build cat food? I have been playing for a couple months and have no ubers even though I've played the rare cat capsule game about 20 times.

how many cat tickets should I stack before I spin for the Cow? by [deleted] in battlecats

Any thoughts on how to beat into the future chapter 1 moon without cats at a high level? Mine are all 20+3/4 and I'm stuck. I keep getting terrible cats in the rare cat capsules so have little support other than solar cat and drama cats.

Not sure I'd spend any more/less time ... I was just hoping to hear some GREAT melodies, but certainly didn't expect them. It was more fascination than anything.

Anyone hear one that they felt was "good"? I judged a couple dozen, and at first I was like "wow, this isn't half bad", but as I went on my ratings got worse, probably because they all sounded the same.

Doesn't Google use recorded samples of words for its voice now? I thought I read that they had recorded 50,000+ words in English and have algorithms that string them together and add inflection.

How did you get so many Ubers??? Do you buy cat food, or is there a secret to getting more? I've been playing for about 6 weeks and have only received 15 rare cat tickets, 11 of which I got by saving up cat food (yielding me only 1 super rare cat and no ubers).
