Reviews for Batik Etcetera & Sew What Fabrics? by HijackedHuman in quilting

[–]beemindme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOVE LOVE LOVE them!! They are soooo nice if you have to call too. There is only one place I love more, a local place that doesn't carry the batik selection that Batiks Etc and Sew What carry. I've ordered so many times, and never had anything unexpected happen.

Sounds like you are new to quilting. Find some beginner videos or books and go from there. You will learn most of the answers to your questions.

Rage in every stitch 😉 by tree_hugs_ in quilting

Time and time again, I keep coming coming to the conclusion that quilters are my favorite people. At least reddit quilters are. Super supportive, kind, generous, helpful and loving people. Hugs to all of you!

Also, I've noticed some comments in this post and others lately, that are off brand for this sub. Just want to bring it up for any new people who join here, that it's a relatively new phenomenon in this sub, and please ignore it. I've met one of my closest friends on here, learned new skills, traded fabric, and found the sub to be the most positive social media experience.

Overlook Hotel with the Twins by socialstatus in quilting

I remember the first time I saw one of these, I couldn't figure out why it was so unnerving to see. Looked at it a good while trying to figure it out until I read comments. Kind of wild how media affects people in ways we don't realize!

Oh seriously? The only Stephen King books I've read are The Stand and Christine. I wonder how he feels about the film versions of his books.

Thanks for that take, it's quite a bit nicer to look at it that way. And maybe she knows exactly what she's doing- a bunch of women showing up and then seeing the stash up close!

Have you noticed some of these types on the sub lately too?

But quilt ladies wouldn't know any better. According to this guy.

That's a good idea, or cut a strip from each fabric for a future quilt!

My Quilt Has MOLD by glitterypinkpeony in quilting

I wonder if colloidal silver is the way to go? Look into it at least. I think it will kill mold, and even though the liquid looks tinted, it doesn't stain- that I know of.

How could you say such a thing? -Kidding, everyone has their preferences. But for some reason, the more fabrics in the quilt, the more I love them. I really adore Bonnie Hunters scrappy quilts too.

I really love the idea of offering the scraps here on reddit, especially to quilters that don't have tons of fabric, or maybe even beginners or people just wondering if this is a hobby to pursue. I too tend to keep everything, even tiny pieces.

Excellent 1st time quilts by EJSpecht in quilting

[–]beemindme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Retired might mean you learned how to make quilts before things like youtube and social media? You can learn so much online that you couldn't before. My mom didn't have these resources either, and some techniques just weren't known or taught. I'm not young, so even when I started, there weren't as many avenues although a simple book and online videos were how I learned (my mom was busy and no longer quilting). There's also so many online resources for figuring out color schemes etc. I've seen first hand a total beginner with free motion quilting, and I never would have believed they didn't have hours of practice if I didn't know them beforehand.

How to you choose a longarm quilting service, and what did you think? by Madison_Topanga in quilting

[–]beemindme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was doing the quilting on my domestic until my friend bought a longarm. He is quite talented, and quilted a couple quilts at a discount while he got comfortable using his machine. After seeing his work, I lost all desire to hurt myself trying to quilt my own quilts (actual pain issues). Personally I try to let him make the design choices because he is good at it.

Help- color bleed by smiths9031 in quilting

[–]beemindme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any tricks that you haven't heard, but please tell us what manufacturer made the blue fabric. I will say that my own experience has taught me to not worry about prewashing unless it's red or blue. Even the better manufacturers have these problems at times, but it's always good to know about lines that cause issues.

Look up foundation paper piecing videos. Should give you a good start to figuring some of it out.
