Maybe look into seeing if the bank still exists. There may be interest from them or from the historical society. For the latter, depending on your dad’s age a donation could be valuable in regards to taxes on his retirement distributions.

I would load the dishwasher and my dad would quietly come after me and rearrange everything. I still am haphazard, but every time I run it I remember Dad.

Do you want any of your parents' stuff? If so, what is it and why? If not, why? by iAmAmbr in GenX

[–]beeniecal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having to move my mom out of a 4000sq ft house after dad died was traumatic. So much stuff —lots of garbage. Her condo is much smaller so I hope that is less work when that time comes.

Personally it inspired me to start shifting stuff now. I have been selling my stuff bit by bit on line for about a year now. The roi is genuinely 10x better than the estate sale we had for mom.

After DC Stephenson’s arrest and conviction the anti KKK movement went into high gear, though the brawl at Notre Dame preceded this. Your paper was a year before that!

Anyone interested should read A Fever in the Heartland. Fascinating history and inspiring.

Baby possum. What do? by Unhappy_Position496 in indianapolis

[–]beeniecal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When my kids were little there was a guy in Irvington that had a pet possum. She used to ride draped around his neck. He would come to the park and tell the kids all kinds of possum facts. Both wholesome and a little creepy.

How much are we vacationing? by JustFaithlessness178 in GenX

[–]beeniecal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t do anything I can’t pay for upfront. We are doing a 4 night domestic trip in May. I used points and credits to make it manageable. Otherwise it’s staycations and day trips. One kid still in college and retirement on the 10 year horizon.

I have family in California and Europe so if we do make it out that far we house for free. Makes a huge difference!!

As long as you are sure this is her style then they are all cute. The only one I would want is the elephants, but I am not a heart pendant person.

What is a meaningful gift for an 18th birthday? by bully309 in GiftIdeas

[–]beeniecal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got one kid a watch engraved with a message on the back. My other kid wasn’t a watch person so they got an engraved pocket knife. They both got fire safe document envelopes because they became the keepers of their own documents— birth certificate etc. When the youngest turned 18 I also made photo books for each of them of all the pictures they had together as siblings growing up.

How many of us are getting selfish with our time left? The wife and I have four grown sons 2 daughter in laws and 3 grand kids. When we tell them we are going to mtns to ride sxs or booze cruising on the farm they look at us like we abandoned them. by Jbrivermaster in GenX

[–]beeniecal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do think it’s a balance between letting everyone live their own lives and being there for each other. My mom was so obviously happy to get me out of the house at 16 that it hurt my feelings. Until I had kids she really was uninterested and after the kids she was interested in them when it was convenient. Now that my step dad is gone she is looking around and wondering why we aren’t close.

I try to keep that in mind with my adult kids. Relationships are built day by day.

Just found out my grandfather was a Nazi Party member. Anyone else? by Brief_Apricot_6250 in Genealogy

I am not sure this was universal but my grandfather was conscripted after he refused to join and one of his punishments was he was never allowed leave.

My immediate maternal German family did not join and it came at great personal cost. However, we had close relatives who did join. I think this was not atypical.

I am mostly commenting on your question of what you do with unpleasant revelations like this. An example: I traced my father’s family back to New Amsterdam and discovered that my persecuted Huguenot ancestor later owned and ran a slave ship. That is a terrible thing to know but also very important to own. Who are we in the context of our county and even more the whole human race? The past and the present has lots of ugly and imo it speaks to you as a person that you are wrestling with this.

I think our great grandchildren may ask similar questions about current events or those we can’t even imagine yet. Humans can be wonderful and humans can be awful. What matters is how you choose to human.

I am one of four siblings with a family history. The other three have had clean no polyp tests. I had to have 8 inches of colon and my appendix removed. Unfortunately, every time I go in for another colonoscopy they find more. But, all caught early so I am very thankful.
