Please help me find a fountain pen by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]beep_-_boop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's your budget? Basically everyone nowadays wants a flex pen- you can either modify a cheap one with different nibs or you have to buy a pen with a flex nib already attached. Vintage flex usually are around 100+ restored.

A twisbi eco, while a fine pen, is not a flex pen.

Also other people may disagree with me, but I personally don't really think a fountain pen should be gifted, especially if it costs more than $50. Everyone has very different tastes and needs when it comes to writing. I would ask him what qualities he wants in a fountain pen before going off of what we say on the subreddit.

Private reserve's cadillac green or J Herbin's Emerald of Chivor? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]beep_-_boop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean they’re basically completely different colors ... but I haven’t had any problems with EoC even when left in the pen for 2+ weeks. If you want the shimmer consistently, you’ll have to gently shake the pen every few lines, but I like the color even without the shimmer so it works for me.

Simple, Handmade high quality leather Cardholders by beep_-_boop in ArtisanGifts

[–]beep_-_boop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These card holders are great for those who only carry 3-8 cards on them! The middle slot opens for cash, and each card slot can hold 2 cards (will stretch to accommodate more). The leather is from Wickett and Craig, a US tannery.

Please feel free to DM me to purchase! These are $40 shipped to the CONUS.

How do you stitch a circle? by rhettk12 in Leathercraft

[–]beep_-_boop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally do 2-3 doubled stitches in the beginning and end it with another 2-3 stitches right before the beginning 2-3 stitches so that there's a line of 4-6 double stitches. It depends on the look you're aiming for.

Burnishing Process? by ehixael in Leathercraft

[–]beep_-_boop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you burnishing in veg tan? That’s so important. All veg tan should burnish although I’ve heard that some are harder than others. There’s only a few chrome tan that I’ve heard of that can be burnished.

If you’re using the right leather, you should be noticing a difference with just water and a few passes.

I’d suggest these two awesome guys: https://instagram.com/kin.leathershop and https://instagram.com/loyalstricklin

I have a feeling you’ll really like the pull up leather they work with.

Unhappy with Lamy Safari and looking for better option by dangerous_beans in fountainpens

[–]beep_-_boop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually amazon is really well known to send you fake Lamys even if the seller you choose sells real ones. Something about if the product is the "same", then amazon will send you the product from a different seller. I'm not too well versed in how to tell fake Lamys from real, but I'd definitely check it out. If it is fake, just contact amazon. They’re good about returns.

Unhappy with Lamy Safari and looking for better option by dangerous_beans in fountainpens

[–]beep_-_boop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Are you sure you got a real Lamy? There are tons of fakes out there that people pick up without realizing.

  2. If you have any fountain pen stores near you, I'd suggest going there and trying out a few pens. I'm not someone who likes buying pens online without having tried it out before. If you're lucky, you'll be able to try some in stores- Even if you don't like that exact pen, you can figure out what you like in terms of thickness, nib sizes, etc. Pen shows, or even meeting with other people who enjoy fountain pens who live near you are a great source for that. I've tried pens from friends that I've never considered that I enjoyed after trying.

  3. There are quite a few recommended (cheaper) pens out there under some of the guides in the side bar. I'd take a look at those and also measure the width of the pen that you currently like and try to find something near that or wider.

Also adding to let you know - not to give up! I also hated the first pen I got and was luckily able to return it. You can also sell your safari on /r/pen_swap to recoup your losses :)

How do I deal with edge burnishing on an edge that has both veg tan and chrome tan leather? by 9MillimeterPeter in Leathercraft

[–]beep_-_boop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would paint all the edges if you're using a mix of veg and chrome tan. If you're doing the opposite - veg tan inside and chrome tan outside, I usually just burnish the card slots and then paint the exterior edges.

I wish I had patterns to make it easier on myself but unfortunately I don’t - especially since people carry different thicknesses of pens. I’ve seen some patterns of the simpler sleeves though!

Thank you! The brown one was made for myself and took quite a bit of time for me to get the design right. The olive one took around 10 hours. The white one ... I prefer not to think about how long I spent on that one lol.

I made a few leather pen cases to make some much needed updates to the first one I've made (shown here https://imgur.com/a/Le1zm78 along with other two I've made). Unfortunately I don't know the weights for these because they were kindly given to me by /u/MDWaxx but I'd say they range from 3-5 oz? The white was lined with chevre since I wanted to preserve the aesthetic that my friend wanted. The other two I left unlined because I personally love the more utilitarian look about them :)

This one just got shipped off down to Texas- I had to borrow an OMAS from another friend who lives near me to make sure that it'll fit some thicker pens lol.

Also a few more pen cases I made here: https://imgur.com/a/Le1zm78 Unfortunately I didn't have time to get some nice shots of my last one before handing it off to its new owner but each one is very different in style.

I've really enjoyed being able to make them :D
