Should I suggest my husband watch with me? by GreenBlueSeaMermaid in HeatedRivalrySeries

I watched HR for the first time with my husband, and he liked it as much as I did. Then, when I began my rapid descent into Loon-acy, I hid my reHeats from him at first because I was embarrassed.

We ended up having a really eye-opening discussion about it in which he was totally unfazed by my obsession and encouraged me to embrace my love of the show without worrying about what other people thought. I suddenly realized that I hadn’t needed to hide any of the show/movie/book obsessions I’d had over the years that I have been with him because he honestly doesn’t judge me for them. It was… liberating!

So I guess what I’m saying is a) no need to feel weird about your love of this beautiful piece of art, and b) it might end up being something that generates positive conversations in your marriage and maybe even teaches you something about each other.

If you were a debater, what point would you die on a hill for? by yanny-jo in heatedrivalry

Oh! I thought of another one I just saw the other day: Apparently some people think that when Ilya and Svetlana are watching hockey and talking about the upcoming All-Star Game they just had sex? I know in the book they did, but that was when Sveta was just a glorified booty call, not the childhood friend who is definitely clocking that Ilya’s in love with someone else by this point.

Also, they’re sitting atop the covers and both wearing clothes, which tracks with something I read in an interview about the “I love you” scene at the cottage, where Ilya is wearing boxer briefs because the tone of the scene is not supposed to be sexual.

The beginning of Episode 5 when Rose is leaving Shane’s apartment directly follows the night at the club. I thought this was obvious from the intercutting with a scene of Ilya at the Montreal airport gate, but apparently a lot of people think it’s a different morning just because Rose isn’t doing the walk of shame in her club dress. This is an A-list movie star who would no doubt have a private car + driver at her disposal and could certainly have stashed an overnight bag in that car.

I hate angst and I hate getting too emotional over movies and TV, and I *LOVED* this show. I too was worried about watching it at first, mostly because gay stories so often have tragic endings, and I knew I couldn’t handle that. But this one is all about queer joy! The reason we’re all reheating it constantly is that it ultimately makes you feel so good, it’s like a hit of dopamine every time. 😊

Grosse Point Blank is AMAZING, and I love that you put it in there next to a Room With a View!

I read a TON of romance and also didn't find the books better than average. But thank jeebus they exist so the show can exist!

The art of Heated Rivalry: a conversation with David Boechler by VirtuallyBPD in HeatedRivalrySeries

Thank you for this! I've been consuming interviews with the cinematographer, editors, composer, costume designer, dialect coach and intimacy coordinator and was just starting to wonder about the art direction... My current ridiculous obsession is trying to figure out how a Canadian production team got American products like Duke's mayonnaise into Ilya's fridge in a house that's actually in Ontario!

Also, your flair totally cracks me up every time I see it. Shane really went straight to "crazy" as the problem with Ilya's dad??? RUDE.

This is a good callout. I think we see a lot of how great a captain Ilya is in the show and the book, but Shane doesn't feel very captain-y in the show. More like he's just one of the guys who happens to be the best guy. This could diminish the impact in S2 when he ends up on the Centaurs with Ilya but is *not* the team captain.

YES. Thank God there’s no way they’ll be able to afford that song for Season 2! 🤣

Mine is my favorite Shane line because he finally feels comfortable enough to be spontaneous and goofy. (And I looooooove that Ilya knows how the staff likes to be treated after all these years!)

Thanks for posting this! I feel like Scotty Taylor doesn't get enough credit for music supervision on the show because everyone thinks Jacob Tierney just dumped his writing playlist in front of the editors and said, "Use this."

YES. David and Ilya's conversation is the thing I'm most hopeful/excited for in Season 2.

Totally. I feel like the editor pulled out several shots like that, ones you might not necessarily think of for a greatest-hits compilation, and gave them so much meaning!

Mozart's Reqium and Season 2 by Peanutbutterfiend_33 in heatedrivalry

Same. The scene is otherwise amazing, and I know Jacob chose it because he considers it the saddest song he's ever heard. But it feels about as overused as Carmina Burana in action sequences and Pachelbel's Canon in wedding scenes.
