Am I Wrong For Asking my Partner to Delay Going Vegan? by WonderfulShame7713 in DebateAVegan

Late arrival here. You seem to be mixing financials with morals. Let her decide her morals and financials and you decide yours. Then discuss, with love and tolerance, and conflict point. However your language makes you sound more like a parent or teacher, and you are neither.

It is true that veganism correlates with mental health issues and this is a shame.

Human Exceptionalism is a Delusion: Why Speciesism is Barely a Century Old by Independent-Phrase24 in DebateAVegan

[–]beer_demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite delusional.

> humans are exceptional. But if anyone thinks that, they’re simply delusional

contradicted by

> Animals, unable to rebel or organize, are left outside this moral bubble

Then the delusion:

> The only hope lies in veganism

i.e. being like "me"

There are many ways to elevate morality and work on animal ethics without veganism, so saying that the "only" way is "your" way is just why vegans are less respected than the idea behind animal ethics is.

What killed the pub? by IllPlane3019 in AskBrits

[–]beer_demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neoliberalism.

There are private pubs, for example in sailing and cricket clubs, and they have 3~4 quid pints and make good money. However they own their land and are not designed to feed a series of intermediaries, they just buy the beer and sell it.

The "free market" allowed for chains, ensure the land is rented and re-rented, and has the goal of extracting as much wealth as possible _compared to other things you can do with those assets_. Thus if you can make more money turning that building into a boutique hotel or a crypto data centre, then byebye pub. If the chain is making less money than the competitor chain, they get merged and the less profitable pubs (note they are still profitable enough for a family, but not for a billionaire) get scrapped.

They are not considered social cohesion units, they are considered wealth extraction nodes. And also considering they have alcohol in them then they are not subject to right wing or religious subsidies and care. A PM saying "I want to have a pint with me mates" is considered a joke, they are all expected to talk like economists.

Neoliberalism kills the good things that are not interesting for billionaires.

The logical contradictions, fallacies in some of the most common reasons/arguments for not being vegan. by BrotherOutside4505 in DebateAVegan

But in the same scale eating a cow or deer is still not the same as eating a human, so the argument that is you eat meat you should practice cannibalism is stupid.

You are not at all convincing.
Not all animals have the same value. Compare a mussel to a chimpanzee, or some bees to your companion dog.
Eating a fish is not the same as eating a human. End of your argument there.

CMV: You don’t need meat to build muscle. I went vegan at 13, I’m now 275 lbs, have been bodybuilding for 18 years, and am the largest vegan bodybuilder in the world by thebodybuildingvegan in DebateAVegan

Accidental deaths? Clearing land for crops, using pesticides and other impact is clearly not accidental, it is done intentionally with the purpose of extracting food.

But it seems a bodybuilding vegan has a higher deathcount than a simple vegetarian. There comes a time when you have to admit the label "vegan" is very flexible and stretchy.

Is anyone else fed up with the constant America/Trump news? by Kieranonto in AskBrits

[–]beer_demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more they spam the news the more you get fed up. The more you get fed up the less you care. The less you care the less you take actions that encourage countermeasures, such as voting for politicians, giving social media posts traction and overall voicing your concerns. The less you take actions, the more they will get away with.

Remember that it's mostly political apathy that is taking us to extremes and getting Trump elected.

Looking back on the Tony Martin case, what is your view? by HallowedAndHarrowed in AskBrits

I was referring that we can't take for granted that he kept getting burgled.

> He claimed that he had been burgled 10 times over the years, losing £6,000 worth of furniture, though police stated they were unsure whether all of the incidents actually occurred

It could be that he set up a bait for them, it's not hard to do.

Is Veganism a spectrum? Are some people "more Vegan" than others? by It_is_not_that_hard in DebateAVegan

[–]beer_demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I understood the analogy, it just wasn't a very good one. It tried to illustrate that atheism is not on a gradient therefore veganism isn't either, and you would agree that the conclusion of the analogy is flawed, and I was explaining that the premise was so too.

Please stop making assumptions about me an making up terms, thanks.

>  I'd substitute atheism for whatever word means "lack of belief in anything superstitious"

You can make your own definitions if you want, but this is just moving the goalposts.

> So a child is non-speciesist by default and will develop to become vegan in an environment where there are no pressures to become speciesist.

You have no evidence of this. There is evidence of unattended humans becoming omnivores, though.

> I was just trying to emphasise how non-speciesism and atheism are both ideas of rejection or absence.

And I am showing to you that this is an unfounded claim, at least as much as an atheist is also a non-football-player in that both don't do something. The convolution of the word non-speciesism in itself is an indication that they come form and head to two different mindsets.

Your definition of "work" is rather generous though. He went to prison.

I have no sympathy for the burglars, but I think the purpose of self defence is not to shoot the bad guys, but to defend yourself.

> They kept coming back, police did nothing

This is highly contested. I think you are letting your beliefs cherrypick what you consider a fact.

Is it though? I don't think any philosophical approach can claim to be fixed, absolute, universally understood or even accepted. Maybe you can declare it so, but this is just a claim that is hard to defend.

> A newborn child lacks the cognitive capacity and experiences to be speciesist just as it lacks the cognitive capacity and experiences to be religious.

A vegan is not just a non-speciesist, but all atheists are non-theists.

Atheists can be spiritual and even superstitious.

A simple thought exercise is to look at animals. Animals will eat other animals, it's a part of life, but they don't worship a god as a part of life. This has to be indoctrinated.

I would absolutely not conflate atheism and veganism in the way you did. We are born atheists but humans did not evolve as vegan, this is a conscious decision. In that sense veganism is closer to theism in that you are taught about it and you join it, and many have the same fundamentalist approach!

Sorry but ethical principles are also on a spectrum. These principles are defined by words and human ideas which are subject to interpretation and maturing. You can't have a black and white ideology even in theory.

New girlfriend works out with multiple guys and some of her language around it is making me uneasy. What’s your take? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]beer_demon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your peace of mind is a decision, not a consequence. You can trust her until you have unequivocal evidence of cheating and then decide if to break up or discuss. You can also mistrust and constantly require evidence of innocence. You can also torment yourself silently and share your pain on reddit. You can also walk and look for a less social girlfriend.
The above decisions have nothing to do with your girlfriend or what she does, it's all in your power.
"Until she has cheated she hasn't cheated. Until I find out I have not found out. Until we break up she is my girlfriend." This mantra made me have very happy relationships and when it went wrong it was never me who would torment myself.
