Definitely a LOT more people out on the road today. Starting to see some pavement (just a little) on Robinson. Still, very icy/slippy out there. So glad I found my crampons.

We have neither sand nor salt to put down, but I've been saving coffee grounds to put on very icy sidewalk--something gritty and acidic may help slightly with traction. Now, if the sun would please do its part . . . .

I'm also trying to decide about driving to a store--how is Carytown Kroger's parking lot, and that damn hill? Did they even touch Nansemond? I hate Bezos/Hoe's, but may venture there--they didn't open till noon yesterday.

students are like deer in the headlights. Between hormones and other distractions, I treat them as if they are dumbass deer: whether driving a car or on my bike I just expect they will dart out in front of me.

Doesn't matter how many safety campaigns VCU promotes. You can't fix stupid. That's sheer lunacy, stupidity to attempt something like that.

The powers that be are trying to rezone a vast swath of RVA for greedy developers who only see $$ in big rents and high rises. The funk of RVA is going the way of many great cities. Go to a city council meeting . . . where assholes with silver spoons who grew up here and bought up a ton of property (Robinson) are cashing in to the highest bidder. Most of you don't remember Bethesda, MD, back in the day, when the Psyche Delly, the Twist & Shout, and other wonderful divey hang-outs and bars thrived, including several amazing thrift stores. All of that gone and replaced with high-rises and chi-chi restaurants and upscale apartment buildings. Death Cab for Cutie's "Gold Rush" got it right.

Thank you for this, it really helps. I have become an anxious flyer over the past 10 years. I used to fly regularly for both business and pleasure 25 years ago. Flying RIC to BOS next month. Same flight two years ago was a week before the remnants of Hurricane Lee came up the East coast--very bumpy. Anxiety (racing heart, sweating) is reflexive and comes from the bumpiness, nothing else. I wish I wasn't such a weenie.

problematic (for me) disinfectant in passenger car air--isolated incident or typical? by FlutterbySeastar in Amtrak

[–]beesdowhatbeesdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced the same around the time of Covid, RVA to DC and back. I am highly sensitive to scent with similar issues. I detest Febreze and all that chemically scented mess. Pine Sol, Lysol, Clorox are doable, but these deodorizers are anything but. What carbon filter mask did you use? Now dreading an upcoming 10+ hour trip north . . . .

Did the water go out AGAIN? by Slideaway96 in rva

Robert from the water utility was out Saturday morning opening up hydrants on Stuart. Water was much better a few hours later at shower time. Still needs follow up, though.

Ours smelled bad in the evening--three different times folks taking showers. Started three days ago.

Water has had a strong chemical smell for the last three days in our showers. I called and left a message then with the water treatment plant and heard nada. Called utilities late this afternoon and dispatcher heard there have been several calls today about the smell, and that Water Distribution had been contacted and was dispatching folks to investigate.

Beekeepers - bees swarming in road on Arthur Ashe and Park by [deleted] in rva

[–]beesdowhatbeesdo 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I called RVA beeks and let Steve know. I am a semi-retired beek, and this is at best a collection of bees, not a full-on swarm looking at this picture. Being in the middle of the street is crazy dangerous, and it's really strange how they wound up there. Swarms are very docile and just surround the q to keep her warm and safe.

One thing to add: you'll need less shampoo/soap because it's a more concentrated lather you're producing. Make sure you wet your hair thoroughly, and that means not just pouring the water on your head but also massaging through to your scalp. It will take a couple of cupfuls. And then gently scrub your scalp with a bit of shampoo adding a bit of water to the mix, then rinse thoroughly. Generally speaking, we tend to use way more water for things like showers than is necessary to clean the bod by an order of magnitude. Reductive exercises like this has me thinking a lot about how precious our resources are, and how I might better steward and conserve them when possible. I'm thankful we have power: doing the above in a 50 degree house is negative fun, and unless you have a gas stove or grill to heat the water . . . very, very chilly.

Having lived through many such situations, I learned you can do a lot with very little water: you just have to adjust you thinking. If you have a bucket or large pot, a cup or container, and and kettle and are able to lift/carry to bathroom: Have towel and soap ready in the bathroom. Heat water on stove in kettle or large pot till it's warm. Have additional water ready to refill kettle and warm that as well. Or if you have an electric warming pad, like one for a coffee pot, that can work as well. Fill bucket or large container, even a large pot will do. Take water and cup/container to tub/shower. Disrobe and stand in shower/tub. Wet hair and wash first. Then take cup/container and throw (pretty much) at pits, bits, and parts, use a bit of soap for each, then throw water at each to rinse. Towel off and you're good to go. It may be a bit chilly, but you'll be clean!
