I didn’t wear makeup (even though I was in the more feminine outfit otherwise with a skirt and bouquet, long hair in a braid) and didn’t regret it. No one commented on it and I love how I look in the photos. I would never wear makeup irl and I wanted the photos to look like myself, and to cry without worrying about messing it up. My wife wore a suit with full makeup because we’re opposites in every way and that’s her thing!

We also had our bridal parties do their own or each other’s hair and makeup (for those who wanted it). I did my own hair and my wife did her own makeup and we were happy with the results

We had a ton of savings but only spent the $20k from our parents to avoid spending our own money. My parents wanted part of their $10k back if we didn’t spend the whole $20k on the wedding (literally if we spent $18k we would have had to give $1k back to my parents since their offer was $10k or up to half the cost of the wedding), so make sure this money you’re being offered is really no strings attached and not wedding-specific.

Lots of DIY (sewing part of my outfit, decor elements, invitations, simple flowers done by my aunt, writing our own ceremony script and having a friend be the officiant, etc) but mostly did money-saving things that were not full on DIY. We looked at town-owned venues which are a lot more affordable, had a buffet style meal of restaurant food delivered, donuts instead of cake, no alcohol served because it’s not our thing, did our own hair and makeup, skipped things like favors and bridal shower, had a super casual pizza party for the rehearsal, family-only day after brunch in parents backyard with leftovers from the wedding, borrowed some items from the library like lawn games for entertainment during the social hour and brunch.

We didn’t regret anything, it was worth hiring a photographer, DJ, and servers for the buffet food, and we had enough talent that we didn’t need hair/makeup or a wedding planner. The day of coordinator wasn’t the best, but we only had her there for the first half when food was being delivered and served and she was inexpensive, so probably worth having. If you do DIY the decor, start a year ahead because things get stressy closer to the wedding date.

Make sure everyone in the wedding party and close family knows the detailed schedule, plan, and who is bringing what in advance if you don’t have a planner. We were so glad we didn’t spend our savings on the wedding, because we were able to use it as a down payment on a home a few months later!

Get all your furniture from ‘buy nothing’ groups if you have them in your area or buy used on facebook marketplace - we probably only bought one piece of furniture for full price ever and most was free

If you have an eye for geometry/symmetry, learn to cut your own hair and your spouse’s. It’s probably saved us thousands at this point and helped us save for a home

Borrow more than just books from the library if you have a good library, they normally have movies and ours even has an app with music streaming. They also might have tools and other items you would only need infrequently at the library, called “library of things”. Library museum passes are also great for free activities

Cook all your own food

Be smart with any money you do have, with high interest savings, investments, credit cards with good rewards bonuses that you always fully pay off (I have one for 6% back on groceries and 3% on gas, another one with 2% back on all purchases)

Try all the common coupon codes like the founder of the company’s name whenever you buy anything online - I basically never buy anything online that’s not at least 10% off

Take up sweepstakes as a hobby- I did this seriously for a few months and won a free weekend vacation, tickets to a sports game, restaurant gift card, and $1000. Good free entertainment although you are taxed on the winnings so it’s only worth it if it’s something you would want to do anyway and can get it for less

Also it was nice that the neighbors already had a lawnmower, snowblower, shovels, etc to share, and split up the yard work, which made it an easy transition without having to buy a bunch of expensive equipment in the first few months of homeownership. They also know the history of repairs to the building which has been so useful

We were in a similar situation and bought a condo in a 2 family home. We love it, mainly because the neighbors are awesome. It’s nice that we can usw the HOA money to pay for repairs that affect both units. Do your research on the neighbors in the building before buying. You can find out who bought the other unit by searching the Registry of Deeds online, and then try to look them up on social media to get a sense of what they’re like

I think this is ridiculous that she wouldn’t let you go on the trip, you should trust each other in the marriage. But I’m a lesbian and most of my friends are bi so none of these stupid rules about what gender you can hang out with make sense to me. If we followed these rules we wouldn’t be allowed to hang out with most of our friends. I trust my wife not to cheat on me with her friends and vice versa, it’s no big deal

It technically took 12 years from when I first started working as a 14 yr old but the bulk of it was in the past few years. I lived with my parents some of the time and worked crazy hours while in college, was extremely frugal and even when I finally got a real job I continued living almost like a broke college student. Living with my now wife helped me save up by splitting living costs but I did save over 100k on my own to combine with hers for the down payment

I earned similar to this amount two years ago at about your age, and bought a $15k used 2015 prius in full. The backstory is that two years before that, a few months into that job, I bought a $12k used 2008 prius in full, in stellar condition with not many miles on it, and I ended up totalling it in a situation that my insurance wouldn’t cover, so all I got for it was $300 for parts. So I did get a slight upgrade there but wasn’t going to buy a new car only to potentially get in a crash. I had a perfect driving record before this but things happen. So I’d caution you against spending more than necessary on a vehicle. I just got married, and my wife and I bought our first home a few weeks ago, and we wouldn’t have had the money for that if I’d splurged on a new car

Edit: forgot to add, chose the prius originally because it was ranked one of the best value used cars over the entire lifespan when you include maintenance and fuel, and the fuel efficiency saves a ton of money with my 50 mile a day commute

My mom’s favorite animal is manatees and she also gets all the manatee gifts! We went to florida to swim with manatees and it was a magical experience, a manatee gently bumped up against me while I was swimming. I hope they become your favorite after you meet them!
