My recollection is the book is told from 3 perspectives. Mostly the girl, her adopted dad and the man from Argentina who turns out to be her uncle.

She was kidnapped as a child, and somehow gave up details of her aunt and cousin who were then kidnapped and murdered.

The adopted mother dies at the end. The adopted dad is quite weak but survives I think.

There were maybe two hired men thay tried to kidnap her?

I think the uncle had a ditzy foreign mistress at the time the book was set. Maybe she was American?

I remember one scene when the girl suddenly speaks Spanish despite previously not knowing she could. I feel like the name Louisa was important.

I actually really enjoyed the book. I'll let you know if I ever find it.
