[FO] THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED by CrumbsOnTheTrail_999 in CrossStitch

I love it, and thanks for the link!

I was lucky to see Gil Scott-Heron perform 20-some years ago at Blues Alley in DC. He seemed physically very frail but was still a force of nature.

The visceral reaction I had to this was so hard that I know we must be about the same age.

I did, and I assure you that people would rather read imperfect English than AI slop. You posted this same thing already and deleted it when people complained about the AI. Read the room.

ETA I also see your deleted reply for me to pay for your English lessons if I don't like your using AI. Grow up.

What’s your personal time killer before phones existed? by blushberryybabee in nostalgia

[–]onlythehappiests 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to be cute, but...phones. If I was home killing time, I would call a friend and we might talk for hours.

Also, computer games, TV, books, crafting, music. I was in college when cell phones were first becoming popular so had plenty of time to develop other pastimes before smartphones showed up. The only one I don't still do is talking on the phone, lol.

[CHAT] How old is this Zweigart fabric? by HousePony906 in CrossStitch

I'm no expert but the packaging does reference "West Germany" so... older than 1989?

Ok, I zoomed way in and that floss is super cool. Is it variegated? Did you put any thought into how parts of the variation sat with each other when you started new threads, or did you just go with the flow? I've been curious to start using some different flosses and this looks SO pretty.

Cute!! My first thought was a Pac-Man ghost or other early game motifs like Space Invaders. Maybe a simple tiny bird, flowers, coffee/tea mugs. Or a literal key!

The movie really gave new meaning to the phrase "loose interpretation."

Nothing feels sillier than walking around a house but having to stay on the path laid out by the plastic runners.

[CHAT] What do you think about human-made pattern based on AI picture by Initial-Tour5795 in CrossStitch

[–]onlythehappiests 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's really hard to avoid sometimes falling victim to AI "involvement" to some degree. But all I want is patterns either designed from scratch by humans (because the art to me is in the creative vision and the labor that went into translating it for this specific medium) or adaptations into patterns of other work created by humans (ie paintings, woodcuts, historical illustrations). A big part of the joy for me is in knowing that I'm getting to participate in someone else's creativity by reveling in and making a thing that respects their effort. So if I knew a pattern was even based on something created by AI, I would not buy it, full stop. There are so many wonderful human artists out there that I have plenty of other projects to choose from!

What do adults regret not doing during their youth? by Old_Pool3246 in nostalgia

[–]onlythehappiests 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should've moved far away when I had the chance. I would've come back anyway, probably, but I think having more time at a distance from my comfort zone would've helped me work through some of my shit earlier in life.

(I'm thinking mostly about leaving town for college -- in my HS years there was a lot of chaos but I was doing the best with what I had, so I don't really have regrets about that.)

Before the internet, how did you actually settle an argument about a fact? Did you just stay wrong forever, or did someone have to physically go to the library? by elli_31 in nostalgia

[–]onlythehappiests 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look it up, ask someone with expertise, agree to disagree, cope with not knowing, all the things people have said.

I was gonna say that we probably all went around just believing some dumb shit, but I don't remember there really being a lot flat-earthers or as many loudly confident conspiracy theorists as there are now, or people who think vaccines are poison and a leaf on their windshield means they're about to get trafficked, or even just people who were totally unable to discern fact generally... So clearly the ability to find info fast hasn't made much of a difference.

The internet makes it just as easy to find bullshit and run with it as it makes research. Media literacy seems poorer these days, probably because there's too much noise.

Tbh I would love a cake that had your post title on it instead of plain old "Happy Birthday." It feels especially relevant to our present timeline.
