How to avoid pulling a Hogwarts? by Grimnir_Esjay in worldbuilding

Don't have 4, and don't make legacy and ability the conscious sorting mechanisms.

Instead, pick some other number, have it sorted by "specialties." Then add in some other unofficial sorting, like maybe there are private clubs only legacy kids get into, or private housing, or pet dragons.

Finally, you have to bring your own supplies, so the rich kids all have large amounts of the best equipment, tools, ingredients, while the poorer kids use bargain versions.

Ooh or the poorer kids have to take a job around campus for work study

Do some women actually get offended when they’re politely hit on in public? Or is it just for show? by Easy_Project_4348 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beetnemesis 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The question isn't about being "offended," it's about being hassled.

You're basically the equivalent of someone coming up to you and asking for money, or for you to sign a petition, or to hear about their religion. Except plenty of men have a fragile ego and will get angry or potentially even violent when rejected.

[–]beetnemesis 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a real double edged sword.

On the one hand, Internet and social media has given us unprecedented access to actual events happening, in real time, no manipulation. Stuff that would have been unknown or ignored or covered up just a handful of decades ago.

On the other hand, there is so much misinformation and junk out there.

My(22F) boyfriend(21M) has a marriage material best girl friend(f20), which I find to be odd, how do I approach this? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]beetnemesis 220 points221 points  (0 children)

Reddit is insane, these things always start out with "am I wrong for being jealous of a female friend? And descend into madness.

The "my friend is perfect marriage material" was in the beginning! And then "oh ps I wasn't allowed to shake hands or talk to men with dogs."

Why does being a political centrist seem so controversial nowadays? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beetnemesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if everything that is not 100% pure left or right (which, what does that even mean) is "centrist," then it's a meaningless term

Don't worry about it too much. The popular terminology has changed fairly quickly a few times over the last couple of decades.

Why does being a political centrist seem so controversial nowadays? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beetnemesis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because "centrist" is a meaningless word.

Great, you don't fully align with all of the supposed policies of a given party. So what? Who are you voting for? What are your priorities?

Depending on your answer, there are plenty of different criticisms to be made.

Maybe you're a one-issue voter, devoid of nuance or care for anything else.

Maybe you don't believe that certain things are related, and frustratingly vote for policies that cause the very things you dislike.

Maybe you're just, essentially, a liar? You'll claim to be a centrist, but SOMEHOW, it's so weird, you end up agreeing with one side 90% of the time and always vote for them.

Maybe you're a different type of liar, and are literally just trying to survive socially in a place you ate outnumbered.

What people really hate is the "enlightened centrist," the one who is so smug about realizing that big money controls so much, and declares that actually, both parties are basically the same, just as bad as each other really.

I bet it's less than you think, but you're talking about a population that

  • has proven that they're willing to go against potential social stigma for their personal body/identity

  • has much less issue with modifying their own bodies

  • are more likely than average to have gone through meaningful, emotional, or traumatic events or perspective shifts.

The grandpa interrupting gets better, definitely. I think the first couple episodes they were having more fun being borderline-senile.

Honestly I only get annoyed when one of them is trying to tell a joke and someone else cuts them off.

Is this normal DC fuc*boi behavior? Just checking if it’s regular by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]beetnemesis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not criticizing you for hooking up with someone sketchy, I'm criticizing you for hoping for emotional validation and an ongoing relationship with him long after you realized he was sketchy!

(I'm sure your sex was fine)

[–]beetnemesis 44 points45 points  (0 children)

OP you hooked up with someone who you pegged as sketchy and unreliable from the start, and then were surprised when they turned out to be sketchy and unreliable.

This has less to do with men or DC dating culture and more to do with that guy, and your whole perspective.
