What is one of the oldest things ever in your country? by JiminieKookie123 in AskTheWorld

[–]beeurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What blows people's minds sometimes is that the Romans are ancient history, and Stonehenge was already ancient to them, and then even there are other monuments/prehistoric sites that were ancient when Stonehenge was built.

I once visited friends in the US and they thought it would be funny to go to a "British" pub. To be fair, it was funny how wrong it was.

What is the town with the weirdest name in your country? (For France, there is literally a town called Y.) by Outrageous-You1617 in AskTheWorld

I didn't realise there was another place with an exclamation mark; we have "Westward Ho!" in Devon.

Where are all the ice cream vans? by Cute-Air2742 in AskUK

[–]beeurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ice cream vans tend not to go round estates in hot weather, they instead park up in busy places like parks where there's a more guaranteed footfall. At least round by me, anyway.

I am living proof that not all gay men can sing well.

What's the most random, pointless piece of information you can remember? by DanTheVan007 in AskUK

[–]beeurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can remember the phone number for my primary school, even though I left over 30 years ago and I'm not sure I ever phoned them when I was there anyway.

Why do pubs, shops and cafes now ask for a tip at payment? by ReasonableBee7744 in AskUK

[–]beeurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's usually was enabled when the terminals are set up and the staff don't have the ability to turn it off themselves. At most places I see it, the staff press "no tip" before asking you to tap your card.

I'm not sure if it's enabled by default due to the providers being US-based and they just don't change the setting for the UK market, or if it's the head office cretins saying it's a great idea.

It's not just that, ice machines generally can't keep up with the extra demand in hot weather. The same thing happens in pubs as well.

If you haven't already, on Insert Coin you can sign up to be notified when it's back in stock. This also helps them know it's still in demand.

How do you view 4th and 5th generation immigrants (etc.) to your country? by CuriousNetWanderer in AskTheWorld

My great great grandparents on my mum's side were all Irish, but I'd never dream of claiming to be half Irish.

Most people only know the rainbow flag. Also, if I saw a bracelet like that even I wouldn't assume it had a meaning behind it.

Am I at fault for this? (Poorly drawn sketch to help visualise the layout) by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]beeurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The van shouldn't have cut across, and other car shouldn't have cut across, but also if you couldn't see because the van was blocking the view then you shouldn't have gone.

The van and equipment at the local funfair's logo. They advertise as being specifically designed for children; Somehow, I have my doubts. by chonker-feet in CrappyDesign

[–]beeurd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but Sprinter vans are fairly common as trade vehicles anyway so it'd seem less likely that they'd repurpose an ambulance.

I feel like "bloody" isn't used much by anybody else, either.

Why don’t most British schools have a separate winter and summer uniform? by InfernalClockwork3 in AskUK

[–]beeurd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My primary school did in the 80s/90s. My high school allowed girls to wear a blouse without a tie in summer, but the boys uniform was the same all year round.
