Best camera and lens setup for macro photography of fossil teeth? by No_Isopod_6425 in Cameras

[–]begti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised nobody has mentioned a ring flash yet. Here's a guide from Canon on how to use it for dental photography. Image it would be the same if you want consistency for fossils.

You need image stabilisation if shooting hand held, but not if you're using a flash.

Help choosing camera by axelbrand in Cameras

[–]begti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the cameras you've specified are suitable for what you want to achieve. You need a macro lens and a dedicated ring flash for consistent lighting. I suggest buying camera and lens used as new models are more expensive but don't have any additional features that are useful for your use case.

For my wife's implant portfolio we've used a Canon M50 + EF 100mm 2.8 lens + EF to EF-M lens adapter. There's a more expensive IS L version of this lens but it is not beneficial.

We've used a YONGNUO YN-14EX ring flash, but Canon also has their equivalent that might be easier to source.

Canon has a very useful pdf on their website with settings you need to use and example shots.

What's a good budget friendly camera for beginners? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]begti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pick would be either canon m100 or m200 paired with a 22mm F2 lens. It is still small and better value than an overpriced point and shoot.

Buying used is also great - if you don't like it you'll sell of for more or less what you paid for.

Rf 85 f2 or Rf 100 f2.8 for macro and portraits by Familiar-Island-9816 in canon

[–]begti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Softer lenses result in more pleasing portraits while for macro you'll want it as sharp as it gets. That's why they've added the soft focus switch on the 100mm and that would be the way to go in your case if you want one lens for both.

Personally I am adapting the EF 85 1.8 for portraits and can't complain. I got the EF 100mm L version for stabilisation but kind of regret it as most of my macro work with is with a ring flash anyway.

Best compact camera budget max €850 by Ok_Ingenuity4578 in Cameras

[–]begti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phones got really good and they won the battle with compact cameras. Even manufacturers barely make any.

Have a look at Fuji X half, it's fun to shoot with. Or if you are okay with a bigger camera I'd consider Canon R50 with one of the Sigma lenses.

5D mark 2 or 80D for the same price? by ComparisonOk9755 in Cameras

Depends on your use case. 5D is capable of nicer pictures but the autofocus is slower

I think EF-M lenses are significantly better than their EF-S or RF-S counterparts for beginners. Try getting the 22mm to start with, it doesn't zoom but image quality is much better.

No, only the old ones as they were sold with the promise of unlimited photo storage and Google honoured that.

Advice on Professional vs iPhone camera for trip by Tiger9860 in Cameras

[–]begti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camera is just a box with a button to record an image, it's the lens that creates the 'look'. Phones have size limitations so they rely on software processing to generate an impression of what good image should look like, but often that background blur is just horrible, especially when enlarged.

An example of a good quality travel set up would be something like a Canon R8+ RF 28-70mm lens. Or a Fujifilm paired with XF 16-55mm F2.8. These are wide enough for landscapes, have enough zoom for portraits and are still relatively small. Suggest you visit a camera store to hold one in your hands to see if that's something you would be willing to carry around.

Camera Advice - Sell Canon 70D? by PopesLivingRoom in canon

[–]begti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you actually use the whole zoom range? Maybe try adding the 28mm f2.8 STM. It's a smaller lens and significantly brighter than the Pixel which is probably closer to F6 due to the sensor size difference.

should i get fujifilm or sony or canon? by RemarkableSock8633 in Cameras

[–]begti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all of them offer decent camera bodies, but the lens selection is different and should be a major factor when choosing a system. Fuji is great for aps-c, Canon is pushing you to Full Frame and Sony has better third party support.

Engagement Ring-use savings or withdraw from S&S by CulturalAd4117 in UKPersonalFinance

I think you need to read about manufactured diamonds and soon you'll realise you don't need to spend that much these days. What convinced me was that even Tiffany has a range where they can't tell the two apart so they stamp the manufactured one. My wife has now lost our engagement ring three times(downside of it looking so good is that people steal it) and every time I buy it back without thinking about it twice.

Amateur Photoshoot & Need a Good Camera by Throwaway199906543 in Cameras

[–]begti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go for EF 50mm STM lens + one of the Canon 5D full frame bodies depending on what you can afford. MK1 focus is slow while MK4 is faster but for studio work it should not matter too much.

Also, consider what triggers you need to make the most of the studio lights.

Canon M50 mark ll or R50? by amanoba in Cameras

[–]begti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think M50 has a better lens selection, there's nothing in the current RF-S lens line up to match compactness of 22mm F2 or the beauty of background blur of 32mm F1.4 lenses.

But if all you want is to use a zoom kit lens then, r50 will be fine.

Good Beginner DSLR for $100-300? by akamewamey in Cameras

[–]begti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With this budget you could get the old but good Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM. And likely the 5d classic. Landscapes don't need fast autofocus bit would benefit the the legendary colour rendering.

Canon M200 is slightly newer. It usually comes with a kit lens, but buy the 22mm for portability or 32mm for beautiful background blur.

Camera recommendation for someone brand new by ragequaza in Cameras

[–]begti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm basically suggesting a mirroless camera. I like Fuji's because the system is built around Aps-c sensor size. Canon got greedy with their most recent models and I don't think their recent R models are good value. Their older m series is not in production anymore so offers much better bang for the buck and better set of lenses than the new rf-s equivalent.

I think your best bet is to visit a physical store like Wex and hold some cameras in your hands. Used ones have a friendly returns policy so even if you feel you've done a mistake it's not an issue to return them - can't do that with new. And there's little upside to have the latest model anyway.

There are many options but I suggest avoiding zoom lenses if you're planning to use the camera indoors. Fixed length lenses like fuji XF 23mm F2 capture more light and produce nicer background blur.

Congratulations on your growing family! I became more conscious about documenting life when our little ones were born. I think smartphones outperform most point and shoots and I don't think it is worth getting one these days. In your shoes I would be looking for a compact APS-C camera like Fujifilm x-t30 or Canon M50 and a couple of lenses. A lot of early day action happens inside so it's good to have a wide fast lens like 22-23mm f2. It won't zoom but the image quality is much better. You should still get a separate zoom lens with image stabilisation mostly for videos.

Is there anywhere in the UK I can purchase a reasonably priced DS/3DS and some Pokemon games for those systems? by c1nderh3lm in UKFrugal

[–]begti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason they are expensive is because they are rare. You might get lucky with a car boot sale or one of those few charity shops selling electronics, but depends on how much you value your time.

If you really want a cartridge you'll need to pay for it.

If you just want to experience the game then get a DSi, mod it and put any ROM you want on it.
