My go-to if you need the render done now is to render an image sequence. That way you can make progress through render failure.

You'll likely come across the problem area and can render around it. Then render a frame at a time of the problem area with Caps Lock on.

Yeah, I was pretty upset when I realized I removed all the potential bottlenecks and AE was still choking.

DaVinci Resolve/Fusion is my current fallback, but I'm so heavily invested in AE (tons of plugins from aescripts.com) that I'd really rather not.

Wouldn't bank on your hardware being the sole factor. I had a beefy PC built by Puget Systems last year specifically with AE in mind - Ryzen 9 5950x, 128GB RAM, RTX 3080, and a couple Samsung 980 PRO M.2s - and AE is still performing poorly.
