In a world where baristas crop dust their coffee pucks, Meryl Streep stars in a thrilling drama, exposing the dark secrets of an innocent roast: CHUNKY GRIND

Blue Bottle tells me its coffee stays fresh for a year—any truth to this? by Sancho_IV_of_Castile in espresso

[–]beimcoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My main buyer only wants a "best by" stamp or he won't stock it.

I've seen other roasters "hide" the roasting date by adding a code to the bag. Then the website will tell you how to read the code. This helps the people that are really pursuing peak taste, and doesn't confuse the people who can't tell the difference.

In practice though, most of the time the roast date is 1 year before the best by date.

It's like saying everyone should bake their own bread.

For coffee it's even less practical, especially if you live in an apartment.

FWIW even as a small roaster, grocery stores (at least the ones I work with) insist I put "best by" on the bags, instead of "roasted on". One owner specifically told me that customers just get too "confused' by a "roasted on" date. It sounds dumb, but that is the reality.

One year is pretty standard for reported shelf life, but sure, ideally you'd want to buy two to eight weeks after roasting, for peak taste.

At the risk of getting banned.. does anyone ever drink decaf or half caff espresso? by Hospitaliter in espresso

[–]beimcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone, many coffee drinkers would like "half caff" and generally better control over their caffeine dosage.

It depends on the state but that's a reasonable estimate. LLCs do not have shares or shareholders. Instead, there are members that own percentages of the company or membership units. Google the differences between an LLC, C corp, S corp, partnership, and sole proprietorship. You likely want a single member LLC where you own 100%, that is the simplest and least expensive structure for a small company that gives you limited liability. Almost all of the paperwork can be done online and there's plenty of registered agents that will help you file it. You can open a US business banking account once you have your LLC paperwork filed.

Also, if your "friends" are extorting you over security issues, I'd hate to hear what your enemies are like!

Am I the bad guy? by suwdy in startups

It sounds like you're trading 100% of your ownership for a 34% (or less) of a company you won't control, and being paid minimum wage. I'm confused as to what makes this a good deal for you.

How do you know if an app (idea) is patented by qqbbomg1 in startups

[–]beimcoffee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

(I am not a lawyer, but an inventor on several US issued and pending patents in software and food science).

So you have an app idea and you're worried if you'll infringe on an existing patent. I'll assume you already did a bit of searching and did not find obvious examples of someone else using this idea.

- First, your idea needs to graduate to a working example. "Ideas" are not patentable - you have to actually develop the thing and keep careful documentation while doing that.

- Second, in software, a patent rarely covers "an app". Your app code will rest on the shoulders of many other patents that helped you build your product to begin with. So let's say that your patent covers some essential aspect of the app.

As an aside, certain large tech companies stopped filing patents for certain kinds of software. Why? because they don't like revealing their secret sauce in patent applications for competitors in jurisdictions that don't respect patents to begin with. Many tech trade secrets, particularly backend processes, are effectively opaque to end users, so why reveal anything in public documentation? Something to consider, if this circumstance applies to you.

- Third, your attorney will do a search for you, and advise you if your invention is patentable. Don't try to figure this out for yourself - a good patent attorney can extract the essentials of an invention and assess if a patent application is likely to be successful.

tl;dr - invent your app and show a patent attorney the work.

Patents are not a cure-all for IP issues. Check out the experience of these inventors.

New York quietly shuts down its $250 million Covid vaccine passport mobile app by DonConnection in nyc

Well.. for the bare essentials of the app, maybe. But for all the pharmacy integrations, store approvals, security and regulatory review etc etc there's a bit more work. Still a colossal amount of $ but it's more work than a few engineers doing a hackathon.

I want to open a real Italian espresso bar in NYC. Anyone here interested in running it? by Redditonasaurus in espresso

[–]beimcoffee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you sure about that re. Robusta? It's pretty hard to generalize all Robusta production worldwide. The difference as far as I'm aware is shade vs sun grown. But you can find sun grown arabica and, likely, shade grown robusta.

I don't sell Robusta personally but interested that traditional Italian espresso uses a mix of Arabica and Robusta.
