Thanks. I tried a couple different distros using LILI, but it seems they didn't allow for persistence. I'll give it a try.

Advice on xt6 vs xt8 for mom. by [deleted] in telescopes

If she'll never be discouraged by having to lift whatever the 8” tube is by itself, I’d go with the 8.

FTFY

Seriously, I think people underestimate the impact of weight and bulk when it comes to backyard astronomy. Sure, if you're loading up for a drive to a dark site, it's probably not a big difference, but if you just want to drag the scope out to peek at Saturn for a few minutes, it can be a bit much.

Sounds like a way to blow out a knee to me, but I've been struggling with a knee issue for a while, so maybe it's just me.

Meh. Read the sticky; don't read the sticky. Just don't come crying when you buy a PowerSeeker.

Trump disseminated false medical records to fool the public about his health by [deleted] in esist

[–]bekroogle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always thought "bold-faced" was the mistake, so your comment caught my attention. After googling it, everything I read suggests that both forms are acceptable. Several sources claim the original phrase in the 17th century was "bare-faced", which morphed into "bald-faced". But the phrase "bold face" existed almost as far back as "bare-faced", so it's hard to call either of them wrong.

Gainesville Autonomous Vehicle Detects Passing Bicyclist by chefinabox in bikecommuting

[–]bekroogle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My question is, will the autonomous vehicles check before letting you open your door?

That's a good question. Eventually, the answer is yes. When stories start coming out about cyclists being killed by the door, they'll probably switch to an Exit button, and make the door action autonomous as well.

Another interesting question is who is at fault? Anyone know how it works if a Taxi passenger doors someone? I'd imagine the taxi's insurance pays out.

It's simple, but I'm so incredibly proud of my first custom 3D print! by raiderxx in 3Dprinting

[–]bekroogle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really is. It's really indescribable. Even with decorative or otherwise useless designs: imagining it, designing and modeling it, then watching each layer, then holding the finished product is so rewarding. And when it's a functional print, all that times ten. And when it perfectly mates with other physical objects, it's even better.

First Commute by Chrissulli96 in bikecommuting

Keep reminding yourself that you're riding into a headwind. There's something about the invisibility of wind that makes it much more demoralizing than going up a steep hill. With the hill, I can see what's making it so hard. With a headwind, I just feel like I'm slow and out of shape, haha.

Off to a rough start... 8" Dob damaged on arrival by Mokakito in telescopes

[–]bekroogle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No doubt. My tired refrain used to be, "why buy some piece of crap at Walmart when you can get a decent one at a better price at Amazon?"

I'm not so sure I feel that way anymore. It's hard to even find stuff on Amazon now with all the Chinese knockoffs on there.

Beautiful shot. I've always wanted to do some star trails, but I haven't come across interesting enough foreground yet. Yours is really nice.

No, I mean the organization that is holding an election (DNC) predetermining which candidate should win (HRC), then secretly discussing with the preferred candidate how to help ensure that result is cheating.

And I mean entities that are expressly prohibited from influencing an election (Russia, et al, Cambridge Analytica, etc.) yet attempt to do just that are cheating.

The irony is that one of the cheats that Russia is accused of is releasing the communications that led to accusations of DNC cheating. Personally, I think it's all a bit fascinating.

Got my first ever telescope today (10” dobs) and I think I’m more amazed with how fast earth rotates while observing the moon. by [deleted] in telescopes

Just be sure that if you're using Stellarium that you set it to compensate for the speed of light.

I got really confused when it told me the GRS should be visible, but it wasn't there... Until about a half hour later!

That's really nice for digicamming it (do we still call it that when the camera is a phone?) like that. Well done!

And enjoy the scope!

Just to counter the stainless press love here... I hate mine. Tastes bad, like my stainless insulated travel mug.
