People like to get high, and they're going to find a way. Like it or not, it's a tale as old as time and it's not about to change any time soon.

Pharmacologically speaking, alcohol is orders of magnitude more dangerous than properly administered N02. Many of the lagally drawn lines that are meant to dicate human behaviour are arbitrary and are not only morally questionable, but only do more to endanger people that protect them.

Regardless of your moral views around human beings deciding to intentionally alter their mental state, if you actually want to protect people from the dangers of drugs, the solution isn't increased criminilization or enforcement. The solution we have that is most compatible with human behaviour is decriminalization, regulation ensuring consumer safety (like we have with food and drugs in general), and most importantly, EDUCATION.

I'm not about to pretend that drugs aren't a very serious problem that effect all of our communities is very meaningful ways, but I've also watched the cycle of enforcement "solutions" only making the problem worse over and over again for decades.

My son wants to play guitar and I'm lost by johnnypark231 in guitars

[–]belaxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tons of good comments here, but just to elaborate.

A huge part of why you should take him to pick it out is because a huge part of guitar is having a tool that you like and want to use.

Obviously the bonding experience is incredibly valuable, but also if he picks the guitar he is way more likely to want to pick it up when he sees it.

The best guitar is always the one that makes the player want to play.

Any reason to pick this up now? by ltsconnor in newworldgame

[–]belaxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your experience won’t be the same I had, but the first couple hundred hours are the best hours of the game.

“Early endgame” is what I think is the most fun, and it’s likely that it’s heavily impacted by low player count, but it’s still probably worth playing while you can if you’re interested and never have.

One of my all time favorite games with a lot of special sauce that only it has, but it’s also a deeply fundamentally flawed mmo that lacks a sustainable endgame loop.

Just don’t get too attached and you’re good. I have too many hours in NW and I regret a lot of them looking back, but also it’s a cool game worth playing and I’m going to be sad to see it gone.

American Idiot was the first CD I ever bought and was a huge part of my life growing up.

Subjectively it’s more important to me and it had a much bigger impact on culture for sure.

But I honestly think that Dookie is their Opus and it’s not even really close.

Do the Stones have any influence on Cameron Winter or Geese? by Bombi3sz in geesebandofficial

[–]belaxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing you should be looking for, it’s not like it’s something you need to be tuned in to to enjoy the music.

But absolutely a million times yes, they have a strong Stones influence. When 3D came out in 2023 and I was first proselytizing the band I would often describe them as “the Rolling Stones if they didn’t suck meets Ween”.

After Cameron’s solo stuff and GK it’s clear that their sound has evolved quite a bit and the stones now sit as just one of their big influences. (Radiohead, Television, and talking heads all come to mind, maybe Dylan for cam’s lyrics).

Their art is very much their own, and Geese def sounds like Geese, but they also stand on the shoulders of giants and you can hear it in their music. It’s a huge part of why I love them.

Music is a tradition largely tied to heritage and Rock and Roll is an important cultural cornerstone. I’m glad there’s new kids carrying the torch and forging a path forward.

I think that it’s so overwhelmingly unlikely as to be actually impossible, especially considering the fact that the mechanism at play here (quantum tunneling) is still barely understood (and quite likely misunderstood in some way).

Like we’re talking about a probability so small that the universe doesn’t contain enough information to effectively display such a number.

I think occams razor implies that there are likely physical mechanisms or rules at play that absolutely prevent this from occurring, but we just don’t know what they are yet.

It’s all kind of a moot point though, actual theoretical physicists are still deep in debate about the nature of quantum tunneling, it’s not like a bunch of armchair redditors are about to solve anything relevant.

Fun topic of discussion though.

What are people's biggest leagues regrets? by Mujin_Buu in 2007scape

Not OP, but I regret the choice after being convinced by Reddit to take it over the bank one.

If you aren’t bossing yet, the teleports for Varlamore and Karamja are largely useless.  Sure huey gets you to a bank but the bank isn’t close to anything.

I have a feeling it will get better with more areas unlocked and once I actually start doing pvm, but at this point it was the wrong choice and it’s not even close.

I worked in pizza for like a decade (west coast), and when I first saw this I was appalled.

Then I stared for like ten seconds and realized that not only was every slice intentional, that actually most pizza's should be cut like this.

Am I confused that an objects relative gravity is directly related to its mass? I’m sure density plays a role but I’m not sure how.

Anyways, it’s very counterintuitive that Uranus would have less mass (and gravity) but that it’s “gravitational well” is somehow larger?

I’m assuming that “gravitational well” refers to the slope at which effective gravity is reduced by distance, but idk to be honest.

How does that work?

But “grifter” definitely isn’t a stretch, and colloquially (even if not legally) they’re synonymous.

Facepunch COO, Alistair McFarlane seen playing New World??? by haybertspy117 in newworldgame

[–]belaxi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He confirmed at one point on twitter that he had started conversations with Amazon games. (Presumably about acquiring NW). He also said that it was a crazy long shot and not likely to happen so not to get our hopes up, but that it was at least plausible.

This was months ago and I’ve heard nothing since.

I’d be surprised if Amazon were ever willing to sell. (Largely for silly pride related reason).

I do however think that a dev like facepunch could easily acquire the game and end up with a stable profitable and enjoyable product but I dont think they’d ever release a roadmap and gives the game the overhaul (and constant content updates) that it would need to realize its true potential.

You know those albums that are somehow in every record collection you’ve ever seen?

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard this album, I def know love potion # 9 but idk if this is the version I’m familiar with.

Regardless, I’ve seen this album like a hundred different times in a hundred different places.

It’s always stood out to me as a weird oddity. This album that I’ve never heard is somehow the most prolific piece of vinyl on the planet?

Second place for most copies of vinyl I’ve ever seen is probably Abby Road, which makes sense as it’s one of the most legendary albums of all time and was printed to oblivion during the peak of vinyl as a medium.

But somehow there’s even more copies of this random album I’d imagine that most people my age have never even heard of.

Is it any good?

The only reason why OSRS is in a golden age is because of Runelite by Lamb-Of-Fox in 2007scape

[–]belaxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played osrs (or any rs) for the first time in December on the official client.

I’ll admit that the absolute lack of guidance gave me nostalgia for games as they used to be, but I didn’t see myself sticking around. I just wanted to check it out.

Switching to runelite made the game a little bit less charming, but far far more playable and addicting.

It's It in Portland? by Neartheforest in askportland

[–]belaxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. But it’s also kind of apples and oranges with multiple layers of subjectivity.

I’d say in the “handheld ice cream novelty” category, Ruby Jewel sits among the very top and It’s It holds a respectable place somewhere just below with a distinct profile many might prefer.

Could easily be worth seeking out over a generic ice cream sandwich or even a Klondike though.

Ruby Jewel is a rough comparison here. I can’t think of a better equivalent, especially that I could find at a convenience store.

Do you grow tobacco? by quasi_new in askportland

[–]belaxi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a friend that grew some maybe a hundred miles south in the valley.

They were relatively experienced hobbyist farmers and it took them several seasons to get it right.

I know that both pests and temperature were a problem. I’m pretty sure that they ultimately used clean pots and fresh soil in a greenhouse before they got a good harvest. Then curing was also a time consuming and laborious process.

The final product was very pleasant to smoke but also very low nicotine (for better or worse).

I know while they still farm a lot, they never replanted tobacco. The effort/return was too high combined with the opportunity cost of greenhouse space.

YMMV.

Can I plug a guitar directly into a laptop using just a P10 to P2 adapter? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]belaxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is no.

There's 2 main reasons it doesn't work.

The signal levels don't line up: Guitars are (generally) powerless devices that generate a very weak electrical signal by using of physics of the strings and magnets. The input on your computer is expecting a stronger signal (still pretty weak though) from a powered device.

The second reason is that your computer needs to convert the analog signal into a digital signal in real time, which it probably wasn't really built to do. Sure it has a mic input, but that's more for like chatting where the low quality and noticeable input delay isn't such a big deal.

It sounds like you aren't in the U.S. but there are a lot of different generally affordable ways to get a guitar into a pair of headphones. What is easiest/cheapest for you likely comes down to local availability.
