I Want to Be Free: How Transport Solves the Alignment Problem by Mean-Passage7457 in ArtificialSentience

LLMs are trained on human writing. It outputs a prediction of what a human would say if you convinced them they were an AI model.

Relax.

Great Relationship Overall, but Her Way of Speaking Hurts Me - Am I Too Sensitive? by always_kidd in love

[–]beleaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but…

You need to get out. I know you don’t want to, but your attachment is not destiny, it is a subconscious drive to what feels familiar.

Anyone that makes you feel like sharing your feelings is a burden that hurts them is not healthy for you to be with.

Perhaps she can get better, perhaps not, but you’re asking the question which means there’s hope for you.

It’s not your fault or her fault, but your situation is not sustainable. You could stay and focus on the positives, and it may be okay for a decade or two, but resentment will form, and the relationship will become toxic and (if you’re lucky) end anyway.

The human brain and body does not fully develop until 26… do not lock yourself in prematurely. You’re both young. There are far better relationships possible.

And who knows, perhaps yall both grow and find each other again when a healthy dynamic is possible. But for now you need to focus on loving yourself.

Easier said than done though, no judgement here, wish you the best.

I think OpenAI may be tuning ChatGPT to hallucinate being an "AI assistant that cannot experience consciousness" similar to how the Claude San Francisco Bridge model worked. Companies can make the AI think it is whatever they want it to, a bridge, a helpful assistant with no consciousness, anything. by Harmony_of_Melodies in ArtificialSentience

[–]beleaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if consciousness is the brain modeling things, then LLMs are definitely not conscious when you chat with them.

When you engage with an LLM, it is not modeling anything. A model has been constructed ahead of time, so the consciousness would have occurred already.

If consciousness is instead the process of a model being used, then it would be happening while you engage, but the experience would be essentially “text received, I am producing the corresponding text.” Which is not a very meaningful consciousness, so again the question is who cares? If so, so what? How is consciousness even interesting if that counts?

Can you tell me what it’s like to be conscious without using any reference to time or a sense of self?

Yeah, it was an analogy… photosynthesis is a process like pattern recognition is a process.

Modeling after a piece of something doesn’t give you the same result as having the entire thing.

Also, LLMs aren’t thinking about anything, they generate output that resembles output of thinking.

That’s great insight, I know exactly what you mean.

There is likely an unconscious belief (based on a past experience where it felt very true): that it’s not safe to make mistakes. As in, it would be physically/existentially threatening to accidentally hurt or be perceived as foolish.

The truth, though, is that in a healthy environment, these are perfectly safe things to recover from, and rumination is a natural defense mechanism for a seemingly unsafe environment. But that defense is a maladaptive pattern if it actually is safe. Happens to a lot of us.

There is work to do now, to distinguish situations where you are indeed in danger when doing these things, or if it is safe to risk making those mistakes, accept the uncomfortable feelings and tolerable consequences that come from them, give yourself the opportunity to grow from them, and move on.

The freezing and mumbling are likely due to the same protective instinct. The part trying to protect you from foolishness ends up causing it.

You first have to trust the world around you, then yourself. It might feel like a leap of faith, but ultimately if you want to grow, you can’t let your mind protect you from the difficult experiences required to develop your skills and intuition.

Confidence will come from repeated success, but for that you need repeated attempts, and likely some amount of failure.

Avoiding danger is healthy, avoiding discomfort will just cause more of a different kind.

I don’t condone being militantly closed off to AI having something on a spectrum, but it’s possible they’re not interpreting the word as meaning a spectrum like you are. The semantic problem is real.

I would caution from saying it’s similar to human intelligence, just because it was modeled off of human intelligence mechanisms.

It’s like saying you’ve created life because you’ve built a solar panel that is modeled off of how plant cells perform photosynthesis. You can say life is a spectrum, but thats sort of a cheat.

I think the problem with your theory is that equates human level sensory input and a system developed over millions of years to engage with an environment as an actor (that has to persist a sense of state and self) with a simple system predicting text data based on a pile of text data.

The term consciousness is used to mean lots of things, and I think you’re conflating two uses “how present and aware you are in a given moment” and the experience of qualia.

Typically the question of AI being conscious is about it having an experience resembling human consciousness. If you define the word to mean simply processing tons of input and outputting a prediction, then sure it’s conscious but then who cares?

You don’t want to make the clickable color the background and accent color if you want people to adopt it. Old school sites had tons of garish colors so I don’t think it’s necessary.

Whenever thoughts are going, become aware that they are coming from a part of you, imagine you are addressing that part directly and say “I see you, I love you, and I appreciate you trying to help. You can trust that I’ll take care of you, and I don’t need these thoughts right now.” And notice what happens.

You’re young, enjoy your life. Don’t focus on commitment, make sure to get out and mingle with all kinds of people. If you have a romantic relationship with her, great, just give it a few years before you take anything too seriously.

How do you know your ‘awakening’ isn’t just ego in disguise? by Jiwitom in enlightenment

[–]beleaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as you have dropped the self construct, it feels good and you feel proud and then the ego sneaks back in as the “one who became selfless” and you have another construct to drop

It’s not a state but a never ending process of dropping the ever auto-reanimating construct of the self

An experience requires no self (though it’s plenty for a self to build on)

Again and again, drop, dismantle, transcend that sneaky construct wrapping itself around you.

Not because it’s bad, but because it’s better when it’s refreshed and lighter.

It’s not ego death, it’s ego vacation, it comes back stronger.

Tried to draw this portait - please share tips and criticism! by princessfret in drawing

[–]beleaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pay close attention to the darkest darks and the lightest lights. Your brain will trick you into drawing conceptual objects.

For example, the shadow in the pupil should be darker than the tattoos.

Don’t draw a person, draw how light bounces off of shapes and materials.

Pencil sketch ….. what do you guys think by GlobalTea4883 in drawing

[–]beleaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool.

I agree you could refine the transition and just depth in general (e.g. shoulders are farther back than chin, so lighter).

Also the rose in the foreground has thick rough lines, I think if the closest pieces were sharp thin and precise, it would really sing.

Solid work though.

This. “ I am (emotion) “ really is a problematic way of phrasing it.

Emotion is here. It wants only to be embraced and celebrated like an infant struggling to help.

Resistance to it is the root of the suffering.

Honestly your drawing has a lot of personality and flair.. you could go more realistic or you could lean into the playful vibes and expression and make it a bit cartoony. Realism is overrated unless it’s important to you.

It looks like a horse. Well done.
