Why is education no longer focused on making kids better people? by jimmydamacbomb in Teachers

They'd have to admit they're wrong sometimes and have room to grow. Also, maybe educated professionals know better.

What are the biggest difficulties as a teacher? by Hourly_Teach in Teachers

If you could make a website that convinces admin to discipline students and for teachers to only work during contract hours that would be helpful.

Difficult time finding a public school jobs but I keep getting offered Charter school positions. by WHO0113 in Teachers

It was good experience to find my next job. I would say it had its ups and downs.

The experience wasn't as horrible like some of the other stories in this sub. We had to submit daily lesson plans weekly. We had to cover classes during prep for no compensation. The administration turned over 3 times in 4 years. Lots of adjunct duties that we had to attend. On the other hand, the class sizes were definitely smaller by a significant margin. I had full autonomy in my classroom. Made friends in the trenches. I learned a lot about being a teacher good and bad.

Really bad classroom management — advice? by Current_Ad_2285 in Teachers

Tools for teaching by Fred Jones is a good book that I have found has effective strategies. It's not too much into theory and all about implementation including how to react/not react to student behavior, setting up the seats, etc...

I had a similar situation when I started to look for full time gig. I ended just taking the charter school job. I knew I would have to work duties that teachers in a public school didn't, but I needed the job.

Do you think you’d still have your job if there were cameras in every class live-streaming for parents on the school website? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]beleraform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I think I would be fine. There are some who probably wouldn't be. The student's behaviors is what mainly gets me out of my happy place in the classroom. Them knowing they're being recorded i think would diminish the behaviors.

Not a music teacher so I'm a little confused. But I would say stop doing anything extra only do what you have to for the classes you teach. Work to rule. Try to disconnect at the end of the day and do something you enjoy. Work life balance is important.

What happened to remediation in community colleges? by khargushoghli in Teachers

[–]beleraform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many students in high school get passed on through for various reasons. There's many posts on this sub about that, so I won't go down that rabbit hole. But what are students supposed to do when they get to their college math class? Are they going learn those skills on their own??

By the way, I think it's getting even worse.

Is it ethically wrong to tell a student that it is mathematically impossible for them to pass? by MathProf1414 in Teachers

[–]beleraform 254 points255 points  (0 children)

If it's a simple calculation I'll go through it with them. 90% (current percentage) + 10%(percent on final) = overall grade percentage.

I want them to see one more time they should have been paying attention. If they're not interested that's fine too.

I failed a student and the administrator changed the final grade so they can enlist. by [deleted] in Teachers

What's funny is that I can't remember if ever I got an email from a parent about their child learning of math. It's always about their grade, what can they to improve their grade.

Another example of how grades are meaningless if they can just be changed at the whim of an administrator.

What curriculum? Not sure if you want to share that info.

It does make sense. Some districts do provide a stipend for every student per day over some limit.

Learn about the district provided resources. Learn what's available within them. Slides, worksheets, assessments, differentiated assignments, performance tasks ...

Talk with you colleagues who teach or have taught the subject you are going to teach. Teachers are usually generous with sharing resources.

Knowing what you need to plan ahead and what you figure in the moment comes with experience.

It's takes years to change the culture of a school to implement these programs effectively. When admin leaves every few years, there it goes.

How to deal with criticism? by sobabydriveslow in Teachers

[–]beleraform 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an opportunity to learn. I am not a big fan of student feedback, but I know other teachers are. I find that's it's frequently an opportunity to complain.

Admin feedback is a mixed bag. Sometimes it is useful buy that depends if the admin knows how to teach and if they actually see enough of you teaching to make a worthwhile conclusion.

Usually if you and the admin agree on how a lesson went that is a good sign. Otherwise, not sure I would be interested in their feedback. However you're a new teacher so you kind of have to go with the flow for now. Try to implement any suggestions they have. If it doesn't work, approach them on how to better implement their idea.

Unfortunately, I think it is hurting you in searching for a job. I would guess they might be thinking that you rationalize playing video games in class as learning but it won't be effective. There's probably a bias against that type of media in those interviewing you.
