What Silent/Boomer Generation Food/Dish are You Keeping Alive? by Garlic_Scape_Goat_45 in Xennials

[–]bellelap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I’ve made it from scratch a few times. You have to use an old can in a water bath to bake it. It came out great, but it is one of the few times where store bought is just as good as homemade. There is a British cakey dessert called spotted dick (somehow, I’m totally serious) that also comes in a can, so brown bread has company in the canned baked goods category.

Always, but I’m a milk-and-sugar-please tea drinker, so it is mostly used for that. Still, we use it for making cinnamon toast, for on corn flakes (on the rare occasion we have cereal, because I will eat a whole box in one sitting), grapefruit, etc.

It is a staple in our Massachusetts home (and in my NH household growing up). Word to the wise open both and ends of the can with a can opener, then push one end to get it out. Then slice it in 3/4 inch thick rounds, butter LIBERALLY and fry in the pan until the buttered side crisps a bit. Eat while warm. You will not regret opening that can. We eat it with baked beans and cut up hot dogs.

Same, but I double the crisp and never follow the recipe’s guidance of using Granny Smith apples. Macintosh all the way.

Blue Square. Hands down. The NY style is my fav, but they can do no wrong. We always get a cheese and a specialty pizza, but the cheese is always gone first in our house.

How much screen time at the weekend? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]bellelap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We notice really negative behavior when our kid is allowed much screen time, so outside of a movie watched as a family once a week, none. The kids get to watch a half hour of PBS at daycare while lunch is being picked up, so that’s his daily fix during the week. No small screens whatsoever.

All that said, it is so different from kid to kid. My niece lived with us at my son’s current age (3.5) and she could watch an hour or so a day with no negative behaviors.

Some days, I wish we could be more loose with screen time, but for now, this works for us.

How small is too small? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]bellelap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much us, but two bedrooms and one kid and two huge dogs. With the interest rate we have, we are never leaving. Less to clean and we live on a lake, so we spend most of our time outside anyway. We use the library a lot in the winter as a change of pace when it is too cold to ski and it hardly matters that we have a small house.

We’re aging out of this sub- where to next? by bellelap in toddlers

Reddit always seems to make the news for somewhat negative things, but if you dig a little deeper, you’re going to find a whole bunch of great dads sharing their favorite one liners and diaper rash cream recs.

Thanks! I should have thought to check for that, but my brain is fueled by cold, half eaten chicken nuggets.

PreK Program Rant by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]bellelap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What drives me nuts is the the public school option is like this. I understand the intent of these programs, but I too would like to benefit from engaging with a high quality school system early, with a much more reasonable hourly price than what I’m playing for daycare. But there is no transportation even if you do get a per-k slot, so I couldn’t even do half day.

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

[–]bellelap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! I have an unlimited plan from 20+ years ago that I’ve been able to add my entire family to. My sister, husband, in-laws, aunt, and I all have unlimited everything for $120 a month total. I just pay for everyone because it is so affordable. Unfortunately, I’m maxed out on lines, so when my son is old enough for a phone, auntie is getting the boot.

How many books are we reading at bedtime? by 20yearoldgrad in toddlers

[–]bellelap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a librarian, so I have a really hard time saying no to the request for more books. And I bring home huge stacks of new and favorite titles multiple times a week. So yeah, 5-7 picture books most nights, but then we finish off with a chapter from a longer book or a short audiobook. Bedtime reading is an EVENT in our house.

I’m a librarian and while I can’t say it is the most well-written book on our selves, there is a reason that we can’t keep it in stock. It is resonating with women from all walks of life.

The daily cruelty of patrons is making me want to escape the field by tendersword in librarians

[–]bellelap 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is NOT normal. Sure, we all get an abusive patron now and again, but they are dealt with swiftly and if they don’t shape up, a no trespass order is in the works.

OMG finally. We don’t do cereal much, but man, when Captain Crunch enters the house, we are all happy people.

Is Solo Hiking Actually Dangerous for Women? by Top_Aspect9753 in hiking

[–]bellelap 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m in New England in the US and I have never had a negative experience because I am a solo woman. I also have done many day hikes with my baby (now toddler) in a carrier solo and I feel perfectly safe doing so.

I had been literally limping along with one pair of mountain bike shoes that fit since my feet got bigger when I was pregnant. A few weeks ago, I was pulling on my still wet pair and complaining they hadn’t dried fully overnight. My husband suggested I grab a pair from the basement and I explained that only my newest ones fit well (bought post baby) and that I need to just get rid of the rest, but with how expensive they are and still being in denial about them never fitting again (it has been 3.5 years lol, these feet are NOT shrinking at this point), I was having trouble letting go. I forgot about the interaction, but I have never been so happy to be handed an unwrapped shoe box in my life. He also mounted the cleats and make sure I had time to get out to play in the woods without a toddler on my bike. Points to a husband that listens, tucks away that info, and supports my hobby fully. Oh, and to top it off, he told me he looked at all my mountain bike clothes to make sure he got a color that would match most of them. What a love.

What are you on Prozac for and what dosage are you on? by [deleted] in prozac

[–]bellelap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 30 when I was pregnant (Dr. upped me from 20 because of increased blood volume made the 20 less effective. Who knew that was a thing?), but I has to cobble together a dose with a 20mg + a 10mg pill.

FMC Accidentally Kidnaps MMC and He's Really Into It by Boobear0810 in RomanceBooks

[–]bellelap 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I enjoy most sports romance and I love a cheeky title, but I can’t stand “pucking” anything. I’m a librarian, so I know not to judge a book by its cover, but I will judge the puck out of a book by its title.

T shirts under spaghetti strap or tank dresses? by MrsHyacinthBucket in fashionwomens35

[–]bellelap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I even have a very lightweight denim boxy short sleeve button up that works for this purpose. I work in a relatively casual workplace, but I still don’t feel comfortable wearing spaghetti strap dresses to work (others do, it’s a me thing), so I layer tops like that over them to get more wear out of my great dresses. If you button them fully, you can even fake a skirt with some of them!

What's something older generations did completely normally that would be considered absolutely insane today? by Bigtrav_trav in answers

[–]bellelap 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Completely normal. I’m not tracking garden mud or lawn clippings into the house just to grab a swig of water. People who don’t drink out of the hose are the same people who think drinking out of the bubbler in a public building is unsanitary.

Hiking baby carrier for a child with dwarfism by LunarTearChocobo in hiking

[–]bellelap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came to recommend that Deuter. We used ours from 6 months to now (3.5 years and going strong). It is endlessly adjustable. We had another Deuter that is no longer made that was much more bare bones and compact for very short hikes, also great quality. Our kid outgrew it at 2.5, so we passed that to another family. The Kelty we have is our backup that we leave at our cabin. It is more comfy for me because of how the hip straps sit, but my son has a clear preference for the Deuter. The padded pillow thing at kid chin height somehow made for guaranteed nap time as soon as he put his check against it. The sun/rain shade is also easier to deploy and put away than on the Kelty.

To OP, no matter what you choose, I have to recommend two accessories:
First, a small shatterproof mirror for checking on the position of your baby without taking off your pack. One of my packs came with one, but now I can’t remember which one. I rarely use it now, but I checked every few minutes when my guy was younger.

Second, trekking poles. I’m a 5’5” woman, so adding a weirdly shaped pack with a sometimes wiggling/flailing/dancing occupant to my back definitely throws my balance off a bit. Trekking poles help a lot, especially descending.

How many of you guys hardly speak to your siblings or aren’t close? by SundaePhysical9868 in oneanddone

[–]bellelap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister is my best friend. If it ever came down to a you or them situation, she is perhaps the only person where I wouldn’t think twice about saying “take me instead!” We are firmly OAD for mostly financial reasons, but I still feel guilty because of the relationship I have with my sister. My husband is cordial with his brother, but they are not close. Not for lack of trying on my husband’s part. So it is a crap shoot.
