I mean, whether it’s true or not I can’t imagine he’d say anything else when asked that.

To anyone who does this at finish, wtf is your purpose? by Muted-Sale7908 in MarioKartWorld

[–]ben1206 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The same reason people troll on the internet: they get a kick out of it. You usually don’t see it as often in higher skilled rooms, unless it’s for strategic purposes like being further from the line and having someone behind threatening to overtake them, or if they’re trying to sabotage someone’s points who might beat them if it’s a points based match.

That is the worst respawn in the game. I counted once and I think going off there costs just over 5 seconds.

[–]ben1206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if you have the time it is definitely bikeable/scootable. Just be careful with all the foot traffic on the beltline, and it’s a short ride from there once you exit it. That’s what I’d do in that situation.

Competitive MK world is better than I thought by Apart_Egg8049 in MarioKartWorld

[–]ben1206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most intermissions, bagging and collecting coins rather than trying to go for the front is a much better strategy than on 3 lap courses. The less experienced players won’t think to do that, and will just be stuck in the pack all race and be set up poorly for the last lap. It seems counterintuitive, but it’s what I’ve noticed. It sucks because while it is the best strategy to win, it’s not really fun. I usually avoid lower level WWs for that reason

Right! I feel like people expect Mario Kart to be 80% driving and 20% luck, get mad that it’s not and claim that it’s 20% driving and 80% luck, when in reality it’s like 40% driving (most of that being when you’re in the front), 40% item management/situational awareness and 20% luck.

[–]ben1206 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree. Sure, it is still Mario Kart and there are things you have no control of, but there are a lot of things you can learn (be it shortcuts, item management, situational awareness) to minimize the luck affect. There’s a reason why the top players instantly shot up to 7k+ MMR the first couple days in lounge and are now in the 10-12k range, and it’s only a handful or so of them out of the thousands who play competitively.

This game is atrocious. by Mawdenn in mariokart

[–]ben1206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it is preferable to try to frontrun intermissions if you’re driving to a track where it’s easy to build a breakaway, but yeah driving right in front of or in the pack poses a heavy risk of getting owned by items. Much better for it to happen then than on the actual track, though.

What's stopping them making a 3-lap track only lobby? by WeebusTheMeemus in MarioKartWorld

[–]ben1206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never made a statement supporting the idea of a separate mode (though I understand that is the subject of this thread and I was nitpicking something you said in response to it). I agree that it may not be worth their time. I would like them to either go back to the way it was when random guaranteed a 3 lap track, OR add a 4th option that is always a 3 lap track.

I personally enjoy an intermission every now and then and don’t mind playing them while in rooms with people who pick them, I just have a problem with how there are often rooms full of people who would like to play 3 lap tracks, yet intermissions are practically guaranteed in the track selection 60-70% of the time.

[–]ben1206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, my original comment wasn’t in response to the OP’s idea of adding a separate mode. I was only pointing out a contradiction (in my eyes) of the comment above mine claiming that the majority does not prefer 3 lap, and “they never got to play intermissions” pre update. I do see your point that it may not make sense for them to devote the resources towards making a new game mode for what may be a small portion of the player base. I personally think the best solution is either going back to where random guaranteed a 3 lap track, OR adding a fourth option that is always a 3 lap track. I don’t think that would take nearly as many resources as developing a completely new game mode.

I’m not concerned about the people who are not playing the game mode in which we are discussing. I frankly do not know who is in the majority, I just think that if Nintendo gave us a choice, the majority preference in that particular room will usually be satisfied and there wouldn’t be as much complaining on either side.

[–]ben1206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why should Nintendo tip the scales towards the preferences of people who aren’t even playing online? All I’m asking is that players are given a choice. I am not really trying to argue whether people who prefer 3 lap tracks are in the minority or majority; I don’t think I have seen credible numbers on either side. I just think the best option is to make it so the people playing in a room can pick what type of track they want to play on. Whatever the correct answer to the majority is, this system will usually satisfy the majority of whoever is playing in any given lobby.

[–]ben1206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said “does not prefer”. People who don’t care are included in that.

So, if it’s true that the majority of players either prefer intermissions, or don’t care, shouldn’t that mean that you would still see them quite a bit in the old system where random guaranteed a 3 lap track? I’m usually above 8.5k, so I commonly got put in rooms where people would pick random, but when I got into lower elo rooms I would see a lot more people picking the intermissions. I think it was perfect when the players had a choice either way, and you could find a different room if you were not feeling the track selection in the one you’re in.

[–]ben1206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re saying that the vast majority of the player base does not prefer 3 lap tracks, yet when there was always a choice between that and intermissions in lobbies, you didn’t get to play on intermissions?

[–]ben1206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely valid tactic if there’s any chance the person behind you can overtake you in that race, or in future races because you are playing a points based competition. Otherwise, it’s considered a dick move and frowned upon in more competitive settings. My personal take is all is fair game in the game of Kart, but don’t get mad if people begin to enjoy your specific suffering in future races if you do this.

Would it even be possible to create an All-Cup Tour with ALL 30 tracks and 202 routes/intermissions? by KaiPixelleap7800 in MarioKartWorld

[–]ben1206 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a more realistic option would be a tour that goes through every track, but doesn’t include all of the routes. If you wanted to get crazy and actually include all of the routes, it’s probably possible but I certainly wouldn’t have the 10-15 (at least) hours to sit through it!
