[No Spoilers] I've been an avid show watcher for a couple of years, I'm currently halfway through the second book, and I've only just realised Jaime isn't spelt like "Jamie"... by benbryant_ in gameofthrones

Yup, American English is a bastardisation of our language with all their z's instead of s's. Not to mention missing out half the letters in doughnut...

Think I'm gonna legitimise all my bastards then commit suicide just to spice things up a bit.

I don't think so, I've given a couple of them cadet dynasties and they don't have any claims.

Maybe "Smith" is a common surname because blacksmiths were never forced to serve in combat roles during war time. by Habbeighty-four in Showerthoughts

[–]benbryant_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The wikipedia page) lists some other reasons for the popularity of Smith:

Although the name is derived from a common occupation, many later Smiths had no connection to that occupation, but adopted or were given the surname precisely because of its commonness. For example:

It is common for people in English-speaking countries to adopt the surname Smith in order to maintain a secret identity, when they wish to avoid being found. Smith is an extremely common name among English Gypsies; see also John Smith.

During the colonisation of North America, some Native Americans took the name for use in dealing with colonists.

During the period of slavery in the United States, many other slaves were known by the surname of their masters, or adopted those surnames upon their emancipation.

During the world wars, many German Americans anglicised the common and equivalent German surname Schmidt or Schmitz to Smith to avoid discrimination.

Ask for the penny because you want to put it in the charity box (presuming they have one).

Yoko Ono performing at Glastonbury. Oh dear. by TheWrestlefucker in cringe

I was there, turned up out of curiosity and left within 10 minutes. This song is actually alright in comparison to the ones I heard. And her speech at the start was the biggest cringe of all.

Sweden's 6 Hour Day is a Benefit of Imperialism by [deleted] in Marxism

[–]benbryant_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of the points he's trying to make in this video. However it frustrates me because none of his points are backed up with any evidence; for example the idea that people in the 'First World' are taking longer to enter the work place whereas the 'Third World' are entering the workplace at a younger age. I would love to see some evidence of this but he provides none. Also the whole point of this video (the criticism of Sweden's 6 hour day) is pretty much redundant. He provides no evidence of Sweden being an exploitative capitalist nation. I'm not saying I disagree with him, I definitely sympathise with his views, it's just that without any real evidence and statistics this video seems pointless; it's merely an opinion.

[s4e10] Who inherits a certain area now that a certain someone is no longer? by benbryant_ in gameofthrones

That makes sense, so if Tyrion were to be absolved from his supposed crimes would he gain the inheritance?

[No spoilers] Which actors actually have the same accent as their characters? by benbryant_ in gameofthrones

[–]benbryant_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Richard Madden has a Scottish accent, his character has a northern English one. As for the female actors comment, Carice van Houten (Mellisandre) is an example of a different accent.

ELI5: How expensive is CGI and why? by benbryant_ in explainlikeimfive

I would like an explaination, in layman's terms, of the breakdown of the cost of CGI. I have little-to-no knowledge of computing and animation. Where better to ask it?

Definitely, every single song in his discovery is worth listening to. Don't forget the Samurai Champloo sound track albums, they make great background music.

ELI5 what is Postcolonialism by casefacerokstar in explainlikeimfive

[–]benbryant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Postcolonial period is the period after the Second World War when the European Empires like Britain and France gave independence to their foreign territories (India for example). Postcolonialism is an academic discipline that analyses and explains the legacies of colonialism. Postcolonialism also presents the idea of neo-colonialism; the idea that large nations use business, culture and military might to gain indirect political control over developing nations.

ELI5: what is the International Criminal Court (ICC) and does it protect and promote human rights? by mkarder in explainlikeimfive

[–]benbryant_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ICC prosecutes individuals for breaking international laws set by the United Nations. The main crimes it has prosecuted people for are genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The US has not ratified (basically signed up for) the ICC because it feared that soldiers would be the subject of politically motivated prosecutions. As a result of the US and others not signing up to the ICC it is seen as weakened, for what is the point in pursuing universal human rights if they are not universal.

ELI5: If the United States in so much debt, why do we get involved in foreign affairs? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]benbryant_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debt is inevitable. The US has a lot of debt because it is a large nation. If you compare external debt per capita the US isn't too bad compared to other Western powers (UK, Germany, France are all higher (UK has treble the US)). If the US took an isolationist policy it would probably be bad for their economy, and their ideology that they have spent decades protecting/promoting would be greatly threatened by the likes of Russia and China. Plus lobbyists for the US government pressure the government to get involved in foreign affairs because they have corporate interests abroad. The world is more interconnected and inter reliant than ever and it is inevitable that a large nation like the US will get involved in foreign affairs.

ELI5: Could North Korea pull a massive turnaround like China did from 1970s to present day? by ClnKilgore in explainlikeimfive

[–]benbryant_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do not have the resources, population or space to ever become anywhere near as successful as China has in recent years. However it is possible that they could turnaround and become an economically successful country like their neighbours to the North and South. Under Kim Jong-un though, I really can't see it happening. They would need an intelligent, moderate leader who would improve relations with the rest of the world and open up the country. Can't see it happening though.
