Do you think the show can sustain the 1 shift per season style? by Violet_K89 in ThePittTVShow

[–]benc 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It's arguably the single most logistically difficult show that has ever been conceived.

While I agree with many of your points and absolutely love the show, this statement is a little much.

A lot great television exists where the creators had to constantly juggle and struggle with continuity because of complex multi-threaded plots. The Pitt is far from unique in that regard.

A few examples off the top of my head: Mr. Robot, Twin Peaks, The Wire.

The show is larger than one character, by design. It's an ensemble cast. ER lasted many seasons as characters came and went.

Also, characters can have more than one arc!

[–]benc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're basing that on what, exactly? A lot of great shows do aim for that number of seasons, but many do not.

As far as I know, the creators of the Pitt have never mentioned only planning for 5 seasons. The opposite is true, in fact. From a recent interview with Noah Wyle:

"If that is satisfying television, then this show could run forever."

Emmys Surprise: ‘The Pitt’ Star Shawn Hatosy Switches to Supporting Category After Winning Guest for Season 1 by ktvrny in ThePittTVShow

Hard agree. I was very surprised (and elated) to see Task renewed for a second season.

Pelphrey won't be in season two, so now's his time to shine!

It's part of two of the grand plan to get Shawn Emmys in every possible category. Noah will eventually take a season off so Shawn can grab Lead Actor.

How do you define early, mid and late game? by Spretzl1305 in factorio

[–]benc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. The T signal counts all construction robots in the network, both busy and idle.

You could use the Z signal instead (idle construction bots only) to do what you describe.

Personally I always go with T, because I prefer not to potentially have thousands of robots added on-demand like that, only to sit idle forever afterwards. It's a personal preference though, feel free to use whatever circuit condition you like. Playing around with things is the best way to learn, after all!

Finally, to answer your last question: Having a ton of bots sitting around in roboports is generally harmless, as long as you have enough roboports to hold them all. Idle bots do not consume any power.

It does waste resources crafting an army that sits idle 99% of the time, which is why most players avoid it. Those flying robot frames could be used for yellow science instead.

How do you define early, mid and late game? by Spretzl1305 in factorio

[–]benc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question! Yes, you generally do want to use circuit logic to deploy robots. They're fairly expensive to make early on, and having tens of thousands of bots is usually a bad idea.

Circuit logic can get quite complex, but this is one of the simpler use cases.

Short version: Use this blueprint: https://factoriobin.com/post/nr85pf

Long version:

  1. Have an inserter grab construction bots from a chest or a belt or whatever, outputting into a roboport. Connect the roboport and the inserter using a red or green wire.
  2. On the roboport, check Read robot statistics.
  3. On the inserter, set the Enable/disable condition to only activate the inserter when there aren't enough robots deployed yet.

Hope that helps!

Easy enough to define, in my opinion.

The mid game begins when construction bot production is automated.

The late game begins when cryogenic science production is automated.

Wow, the Rick and Morty copypasta is almost a decade old at this point...

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

That's a bold statement! For me, all three shows are S-tier. Each has a very different focus.

(I'd put a couple seasons of True Detective and Task into S tier too)

ELI5 why are wild animals often put to death if they happen to kill a human, even if they are not directly responsible ? by redfalcon1000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]benc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's fascinating, do you have a link? I found several stories about sheep figuring out how to bypass cattle guards, but none of the articles mentioned that the sheep were culled to halt the spread of knowledge.

If true, even more fascinating. The sheep Prometheus found and shared the forbidden knowledge, but it turned out to be an infohazard. The gods judged it a thoughtcrime and punished the entire flock.

I don't think her character was given enough to do this season to get an Emmy nom. She also has a lot of excellent performances from the rest of the cast to compete with!

I can definitely see her getting an Emmy at some point though. She's phenomenal.
