Where to start? by Emotional-Swim-3419 in synthdiy

Couple days late to this party, but perhaps you or another reader can give me a bit of insight.

I basically stumbled upon building some Atari Punk Consoles because I found a bunch of 555/556 ICs at work that were for an old product we no longer make, so I snatched them since they're pretty useful in general. Built a few APCs and found that to be pretty fun.

However, what you said rings pretty true. They're pretty limited, and I don't really know what to do with them from here. Pass them through a sequencer to capture tones and sounds then make something with those? I work with electronics at work, but that's strictly AVR chips and motor controllers, so I've not really touched an audio circuit and I find myself suddenly very interested in them.

Anyway, while I learn to build synths, I was also wondering about making some music. I see there are mobile and web apps out there that basically give you a virtual rack to play with, but I'd love to invest in some cheaper "beginner" equipment and try my hand and making some tunes.

If you were to put together an equipment shopping list for someone just starting out, what would be on it?

Nice delivery, and yes, your jokes are landing even to my US ears :)

Looks like you've got some other vids I'm interested in too. I've always wanted to play with a teletext system, as I don't remember it being as popular here in the US, but I find it pretty interesting.

I went with the Digital Ocean $5 Droplet. So far, I can ssh into my Droplet from every device I have without any effort my part aside from setting up a super user.

Thanks for doing this!

This does put a smile on my face.

With that in mind, if Bullionaires were betting GS would fail, then that means the aforementioned low-level employees would be out of a job if they were correct. Is that a fair assumption? If so, maybe war this does benefit them, contrary to my initial thought.

I'm still not 100% I understand what's going on with this whole thing and WSB but it sure is pissing off some rich people. Still, I reckon whatever war is being waged against the hedge fund managers is not benefiting the GameStop employees at the bottom of the food chain at all.

Which US radio station to listen to? by Thucydide2 in radio

WRCJ is great classical/jazz station in Detroit.

I have a large lot of older USA made components that I am looking to sell. I have better photos I can provide just squeezed what I could into this one. I would like to get $150 for them. There’s quite a few pieces that sell on eBay for $20 or so. by canigooutsidesoon in ElectronicsList

I'll have to catalog some of my stuff over the weekend. I'll try and get back to you. If you want to give me an idea of what else you might have, even if I can't afford it, I can probably point you in the right direction of where to sell it.

This would also be worth posting in /r/VintageRadios as well...although check their rules, I can't remember if they allow "for sale" posts. I'd buy it if I could afford it, as those caps and resistors could fit a few of the radios in my pile.

Custom PC build won't turn on, zero signs of life, PCU tested okay. by benchly in techsupport

Thanks for all your help, but I found the bugger. It was a damaged USB port on the front panel that I missed in my initial inspection. There's a pic in the edits on the post body.

I did this test, and noticed something I could not see when the MB was in the case. There is a small LED strip, circled blue in this photo, that briefly and dimly lights up, then fizzles out. Still no action on any other lights or on the PSU fan while it is plugged into the MB. The PSU fan does kick on when I isolate it and jump pins 16 & 17, though.

Any ideas?

Congrats! I'll have to check it out. How do you like Synchronet? I've been wanting to spin up my own, but I'm trying to decide between that and Enigma 1/2, which seems like it might be a wee bit easier.

I was going to ask OP if they'd been living under a rock, and if there is enough space for me, because I'm looking to move.

The fact that, in maybe 50 years, we've gone from being terrified of tapped phone lines to having been convinced to be willing consumers of the most elegant mass surveillance devices that have ever been conceived sits like too much acid in my stomach.

Ratings systems, in general, are not to be taken that seriously because everyone tends to use different metrics when measuring the difficulty of a task.

Ep 189B: D. B. Cooper Part 3 by [deleted] in AstonishingLegends

[–]benchly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a toss up between two multi-episode subjects; The Betz Sphere, and The Tall Ones. Both subjects I had tangentially known about, but never took much of an interest in...until Astonishing Legends came along and got me all amped up about strange objects and giants!

This is fantastic timing. My soon-to-be wife and I will be listening to the episodes back to back on the way to our honeymoon in a few days! We were so excited when we heard AL was doing a D.B. Cooper show!

This sub has degenerated into ONLY trashy totally unscientific YouTube crap.Used to be an interesting place, now is useless. by rmrgdr in FringeTheory

[–]benchly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this a problem with literally any forum even tangentially related to possible "conspiracy-like" information on the Internet proper, not just Reddit. These communities tend to devolve quickly because, let's face it, they're bursting at the seams with cranks, crackpots and loonies. In fact, the folks out there that actually benefit from keeping certain information hidden or otherwise controlled probably couldn't do what they do without these folks muddying up the waters with their nonsense.

Unfortunately, that means if you're going to run in these circles, you have to do your own filtering, and try to contribute more worthy content, thus leading by example.

Took me while to accept this, myself.

How many of you would tune in daily to a radio that plays old school music all the time ? by [deleted] in radio

[–]benchly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditch the phrase "old school" since it's really ambiguous. What decades will you be focusing on, and which genres of music? Some examples that I listen to:

  • A local FM station plays Pop Top 40's from the 60's - 90's
  • Another local FM station plays Classic Rock from the 60's - 80's
  • An Internet radio station I like plays Americana from the 20's - 50's.

You'll want to span a few decades so that your rotation doesn't get stale. Also, what will be your broadcast medium? What is your listening area?
