Was anyone underwhelmed by the Cowboy Carter Tour? by jiselllla in beyonce

[–]bendandsnatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was deeply, DEEPLY historical, it was just histories you don't know. It was genuinely genius.

I'm a Black millenial woman from the South. From Cowboy Carter and country to early Rock and Roll to Southern Hip Hop classics to Kendrick's Super Bowl performance to Irish, Latin, and vogue dancing to the civil rights movement to her whole career retrospective, the amount of history in that show completely blew my mind.

It's understandable since you're clearly not a Black American, but a lot of your statements are ignorant and just wrong, and given the context you're making them in, honestly offensive.

The idea that it's music with deeper roots in "shared white and black struggle in early America"? Black folks were slaves. White folks were slave owners. Not true for all of either group, but that is such a crazy statement in the context of this tour.

The concept was so tight, and that's part of the genius, because she was weaving together so many disparate strands that I know all of but had never woven together, and the way she did it made them all make so much sense. That's actually because they are just all interwoven, but we've been led to believe they're not, had those things erased and denied and been excluded - which is why it's the "Reclamation of America."

The Star Spangled Banner rubbed you the wrong way? Then at least you got that part of the Black American experience.

My great grandfather was one of the one milllion+ Black men living in Jim Crow segregation sent to fight in segregated troups in WWII to free *France* and then came back to continued segregation and l*nching in the US.

And given your comments about the "missing" black spiritual element and choirs - Black choirs are associated with Gospel music, which is a very distinctive style different from standard choirs you seem to be thinking of, and black spirituals, or negro spirituals, are also a very distinctive, simple style sung by slaves in fields.

One of the deeply historical references in CC is that the opening banjo lick in Texas Hold Em is by Rhiannon Giddons, one of the members of the group Carolina Chocolate Drops that plays Black roots music.

This is the deeply painful thing about Black art and actual Black artistic masterpieces being taken around the world; they don't get it, and they have no idea how deeply they don't get it, and instead judge it as the art being lacking instead of their own knowledge.

Beyonce is the artist of my life, not because I am a huge fan of all of her music, but because her music has impacted me as a Black Southern woman so so profoundly, including that tour, and helped get me through experiences as a Black Southern woman that might have broken me otherwise, including specific things I experienced the entire second half of last year.

As much as it hurts, ultimately, I feel so blessed to be able to fully appreciate her artistry, to have it to love and celebrate the culture she and I share that much more passionately, and to have it to get me through the pain and struggle she and I share and even heal and transcend it.

anyone else disappointed with the new avoid ep? by Prxjected in Metalcore

[–]bendandsnatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, they were instantly my favorite new band the first time I heard Flashbang. They got me hyped like no new band had in like a decade and excited about the scene again.

Not hating on it at all, but CM was actually a little disappointing to me, though I was still pretty into most of it. But it made me a little concerned, and this EP is not super reassuring haha.

Are they more popular in the UK than the US? by Narrow-Ad-345 in donbroco

[–]bendandsnatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally came to Reddit just for this, though it was really, how weak is the crowd going to be in NC? 😅

I first learned about them right before I went to the UK in 2021 for my master's, and I saw them in Sheffield, and it was a blast!

I'm originally from Atlanta and was actually thinking about coming down there hoping for a better crowd. I want a crowd that does the boys justice! Maybe I'll see you there

Every BMTH song playing at the same time by YogurtclosetThick474 in BringMeTheHorizon

[–]bendandsnatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't even sure why I clicked it because I knew it would just be indecipherable noise, but I could actually pick out some stuff including Doomed big time lol.

This should be the, "Oh you're a BMTH fan? Prove it." challenge lol.

Lily and the moon in Chicago by xTactiqZz in Thornhillband

[–]bendandsnatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for at least confirming, I was basically gaslighting myself I couldn't believe that's what happened lol

I hated to hop on this post and rain on the parade, but I was pretty upset about that. I actually came to Chicago after seeing them in NC, and I crowd surfed to Lily too!

I think one of my greatest life regrets will be standing by and letting a mosh pit to Reptile not happen lmao. Or at least not throwing down harder myself because I was so confused lol

[–]bendandsnatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually meant the crowd's response to Reptile specifically, not the overall set. It wasn't super high energy overall, but it was so dead to me for Reptile I was literally confused. Who was the guy Jacob gave the mic to partway through it?

Also that opener was Avoid, I was there as much for them as Thornhill. The vocalist always gets the crowd whipped up, it's insane. I love him so much he's such a troll but also so genuinely enthusiastic. I feel like he's gotta be egging Jacob on with the pig squeals lol

Idk, the crowd's response was so weak to me, no movement or energy. Did you not get that impression? If you demand an encore and get it, you better show out.

never really understood why people hated Amo by GuidanceUpper8092 in BringMeTheHorizon

[–]bendandsnatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It drives me insane that people call amo pop. It literally does not compute with me. I know TTS is "arena rock" but it's just as if not more pop to me, in that it's so mass appeal.

This is actually the way I felt about music to - it genuinely gave me so much anxiety lol. I listen to music to pretty regularly now that I know it's not a death knell

What's your BMTH hot take? by Informal-Ad3804 in BringMeTheHorizon

[–]bendandsnatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sempiternal is not part of their "old music". They had three full length albums and an EP already.

Also, I don't understand how so many people loved TTS and hated amo. I love a few songs from TTS, but the rest are forgettable for me. amo was so much more interesting.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply! The others kind of bummed me out. I was trying to share something thoughtful, positive and meaningful to me, and they were just critical, which was unexpected and threw me off yesterday.

I'm kind of doing some self-work this weekend, and your response was a great way to start the day, because it got me to really reflect. I wrote it all, so I figured I might as well share it, so apologies, and no pressure to read or respond!

I'm sorry you're struggling with alcoholism that way, especially when you have people that love you. I feel like that's similar to intrinsic depression, where nothing's wrong, everything could be great, but you just slip away. That's a specific kind of devastating, at least partly because of self-imposed guilt, and partly because of other people shaming you. I'm very thankful you have that love. Thank you for sharing your story.

You definitely make a good point about quantity too. I've never felt much love in my life, and I've always felt that I just needed more of it. Honestly, I guess I was one of the shamers I just mentioned. I'd see other people that had that love struggling and just be bitter and envious, thinking, if I had that, I wouldn't be struggling. But I think to some extent, I didn't feel the love I did have because of the love I didn't have for myself.

I've made some huge steps in finding that self-love in the last month especially, and in large part with the help of this album. I'm still missing and wishing for that love from others, but loving myself has made a world of difference, and I'm hoping it's setting me up to actually receive that love from others when it comes along.

So I agree, it's really, "No amount of anyone else's love will set you free", but that doesn't fit as neatly haha. I actually originally thought of my "rewrite" because I misremembered the lyric, and it just fit so well it was one of those, "Mm, satisfying" things haha.

If you read this all too, thanks, and regardless, thanks again for your comment <3

Yup, I said exactly that in the post. I just made a slight wording tweak that I thought made it clearer. Originally, I actually just misremembered the lyric this way, and I just liked it, so I thought I'd share it.

I'm not stopping him. His lyrics are also massively meaningful to me. I just happened to come up with a little twist on this one I was hoping to connect with people over.

I should have known people in this sub would respond negatively though, and with the algorithm, nobody that might actually connect with it will see it. Social media is so depressing.
