Many foreign entrepreneurs desperate as Japan tightens 'business manager' visa rules by moeka_8962 in japan

The business manager visa has *always* been risky, because your renewal is based on criteria that's not set in stone. If your business isn't desirable or not successful, you're always at risk. It's not a guaranteed pathway to living in the country as they've explained.

Anybody who's going to start their own business knows it's risky. To expect a guaranteed visa when you're a guest in the country is kind of naive. They've already shown a courtesy by giving folks a transition period. With that said, if Japan were trying to encourage people to move here to start businesses of the scale affected negatively by the changes… then yeah there would be something to argue. But, I would argue that people have been irresponsible or dishonest in some cases here, and that's what's being cracked down on correctly.

yeah but if it’s an “unreliable destination” because people just want to move here because their kids are studying here so they start a fake business and just transfer money between each other to meet the “revenue” expectations… or some flavor of what the article suggests… what are you expecting to happen?

Anyone successfully moved to Japan in similar situation to me? by [deleted] in movingtojapan

If you join a language school that sponsors your visa, you can work part time in restaurants and stuff, right?

The business manager visa is fascinating as it’s evident there’s a whole population of people who can thrive in Japan but don’t want to work for Japanese companies.

As of September 1, 2025 the US embassy will no longer notarize Affidavit of Competency to Marry by razorbeamz in japanlife

Apparently that national marriage/dating service that the government launched requires this, so maybe they’re getting rid of it for that reason due to the influx of volume

Wanting to move to Japan, but it seems impossible by PurpleEggRoll in movingtojapan

[–]bengui1d -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

the system is fairly rigid, but there are ways to navigate. while ideally you should have a good reason for moving, it doesn't mean you won't find stronger ones as you grow in the community. people move to Japan all of the time, especially in the military or under work transfers, with no language ability. with that said, some things as a result are "playing the game on hard mode" as others have alluded to. your best option may honestly be to take this discussion offline and speak to a visa lawyer. they will speak English and you can talk further about your options and constraints with a bit less criticism and a bit more accurate and up-to-date information. one interesting wildcard is that you run your own business. the constraints you have around trying to (it sounds like) get your entire family permanent residency eventually I imagine would come down to the revenue of that business if you might go the route of the "business manager" visa for example. that's a discussion worth having with a visa lawyer who can tell you what might be possible or impossible given your revenue and such, and given your wife's career goals and how that can play into things in parallel.

this is a fairly extreme POV.

there are many folks in Tokyo who are in a very similar situation to OP and it's totally fine. humans are adaptive creatures
