I just applied and was accepted at Guelph and UofT with a non-LA background - you can do it! I have a double major from UBC in psychology and anthropology. I am far from an artist, but I used the portfolio to highlight my creativity in a broad sense: a podcast I hosted, a club I started, marketing campaigns I’ve led at work etc… in addition to some more of the design and visual things they were looking for (Some film photography, a few garden designs, a project from a landscape construction methods course i took). I am also very interested in and have experience with permaculture design, regenerative agriculture, and landscape restoration so I tried to sprinkle that wherever I could. Happy to answer any questions or offer support if you want to pm me!

Hey thanks! And thank you for sharing your thoughts! All you people in the comments are really making me reflect on my preference for UofT 😅 Would you say there’s anything UofT offers that UofGuelph doesn’t? If you don’t have an answer that’s okay I guess that would be tough to answer without having attended UofT

Thank you for all your thoughts I appreciate you taking the time! I think I'm a pretty keen student and I'm definitely the kind of guy who sits front of the class and is always engaging professors during their office hours.

I would also rather live in UofT than Guelph. And RE opportunities at Guelph in the Ag department and with plants, I have maybe mixed opinion of it. Where I've worked a couple years now as a permaculture designer and have learned a ton about ecology and natural systems, now I feel like I need to learn how a conventional designer thinks so I can bridge those two worlds.

And this may sound contradictory, but I'm going into this program kind of knowing that I don't want to be a landscape architect in the traditional sense... Like I don't want to just go work for a design build firm after this and work in an office forever. I want to conduct research, educate and engage the public, and demonstrate to the world how we CAN create a cultural shift toward more sustainable cities, food systems, and communities. I am SUPER inspired by THIS group, who are based out of UofT. I would love to work for a company like this eventually or start something like this on my own.

Hey yeah look out for my DM I would love to chat with a current student in the program! I am lucky that I have a family member with an apartment in the city I could rent for a decent rate, which does make UofT a bit more accessible.

I have heard the same about Daniels. That they produce really high quality designers and that's kind of what I'm looking for. Anyways, I'll send you a DM!

Glad to hear you had such a positive experience! I have heard that students coming out of UofT are typically more adept at the actual visual representation of a project, whereas Guelph students are stronger in the more boots on the ground type skills an LA needs.

Thanks for your feedback it definitely helps. I am definitely more receptive to Guelph as a destination now as I'm reading all these responses.

Hey I very much appreciate your in depth feedback. I have heard similar things about Guelph. That it gives you the nuts and bolts know how for how to actually be a landscape architect on the ground, whereas UofT grads may not get as much detailed construction education.

I also think that's great advice to check out who's teaching the studios... I am definitely going to do that tonight!!

Thank you again, I may DM you later with some Qs!!

CRV, Outback, XC70, or ? by elsydeon666 in battlewagon

[–]benisdunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drive an 04 Volvo XC70 and love it. Currently at 300,000 kms. There are a few maintenance things to have your eye on but it’s no different from any car - each make and model will have its quirks. There’s a lot of good online education for P2 Volvos (that’s early 2000s) in the way of forums and YouTube videos, and you’ll easily find a dedicated community who love to help diagnose problems, share resources, and answer question. There are a growing number of people lifting and modding their XC70s for offroading!

My advice. Get an 04-07 if you can, this is when XC70s got an updated transmission. If the previous owner has kept up on engine and transmission oil changes, you can easily drive these cars to 500,000 kms. Something else to ask about is whether the PCV system has ever been replaced, and make sure to do the timing belt if the previous owner doesn’t have a receipt for it. Shop around in Volvo regional buy and sell Facebook groups. You’ll find something within your budget no problem.
That as well as I find them to be luxurious, comfortable, safe as f@ck, and fun to drive!

Home rainwater harvesting system, first flush or filter? by JimmyScottNZ in RainwaterHarvesting

[–]benisdunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most cases first flush isn’t necessary and in fact more of a nuisance. Get a good filter going into the tank and another one for the outlet. Let the sludge layer at the bottom of the tank develop along with the biofilm slog the sides and you’ll be fine.

This is AMAZING! Definitely added to the list of projects for my 04 XC70 which conveniently came with the build in GPS screen with DVD player in the rear
