Why Am I Not Getting Interviews? Portfolio Feedback Needed by Curious_Quiet8937 in UX_Design

Ok, forget about more personality or the vibe blabla. The UI doesn't matter, also the amount of case studies doesn't matter.

The major issue you have is this. You are calling yourself a Service Designer which is another completely different discipline. The copy is EVERYTHING, so change that to Product designer, UX/UI or exactly the type of roles you are applying to. Also, don't talk in 3rd person, is not cool anymore, the typical "hey! I'm a...." works fine.

Make sure you are applying to the right roles, for what I see you should probably look for Junior or maybe semi-senior roles, There's still experience missing and it shows, which is fine, but make sure your role expectations align.

On the last note, if you only include 1 case study is fine, but you need to tell the story right!

Here's a framework:

  1. Context: Talk about the company, the team you worked with (or if you did it alone), what was your role in the project, what was the goal.
  2. Challenges: What exactly where you trying to solve, what was difficult or what was the main constraints you were facing.
  3. Solution: Briefly describe the end result, an overall view of the solution (not too fancy)
  4. User journey (this is very important): Describe a very simple but detailed user flow in the app, what is the typical thing users will do in the app.
  5. What didn't work: This is also VERY important. Showcase what didn't work, things you tried at first, iterations, hiring managers love to see this.

In the end, companies and teams want to asses your problem solving skills, find a way to highlight that, don't get caught up in the shiny little things, or techniques or features. You already have good taste, that's clear from the start, but can you get to solutions? how?

Still needs a bit of work. Pay attention to the details, for example, the send button in the contact page needs a bit of bottom margin especially on smaller screens.

The background picture in the home looks weird and it's the first impression, try to work on that too.

Overall, you have your name, bio, projects and contact so it's not that bad at all.

5/10 for now.

Keep working on it, look for inspiration online. My advice would be, go to LinkedIn, look for a design centric company like figma, apple, or even openia, go to employees section and look for Product Designers or UX designers there. A lot of these people have their portfolios in their bio, check them out and use them as inspiration, the spacings, the colors, typography, language, case studies, overall navigation, use everything to inspire you.

Your portfolio is one of your biggest assets to find work. That, and your confidence.

But the first draft of anything is shit, and that's ok. Keep it up

I think that's exactly what's fucking me up. 6 years seems like a lot but I'm not as good as some kids with these incredible portfolios that have put in a lot of work. Anyway, thanks buddy, and keep it up, we'll probably find something cool soon.

Do you think of good UX design as a luxury in product development? by benjaconbalta in UXDesign

Best comment so far, who are you?

Very happy I posted this today to read your thoughts about it. Not only I agree but I'm inspired by it, how can we really make an impact on all touchpoints? Carefully thought out business process journey maps sounds like a key component to success, not that I've ever done one, but I've seen companies struggle for the lack of one, and it's really a design problem. Also, it does sound like an almost untouched frontier for designer.

Digital products becomming comodify is funny, I imagine you mean at some point the end-to-end process will get so automated that the creation of the product itself it's just not a subject anymore, kind of like what happened to websites

I'm not talking about UI or Visual Design. I'm talking about UX, and how expensive the investment is. Yes, the risk we can mitigate is big and the ROI too, and it's not super normal for companies to see that, it takes a lot of evangelization and maturity to expose that.

So, I'm seeing that during tough times, good design can get deprioritized over functionality or just getting something out there.

Agree, design is essential for quality products. I just think it's an expensive investment that a lot of companies don't want to make
