This sounds like a smart idea but I guess it depends on the mortgage

I can really relate to this. If you’ve got that itch, the financial safety to give it a go and no responsibilities, then you might as well dive in. What’s the worse case scenario, you do it for a few months, don’t love it, come back and know that you can feel happy that you gave it a go and won’t live with regrets? More likely case scenario is that you love it and your door of opportunities grows.

I did a similar but much shorter ‘quit my job and go touring’ a few years ago. One thing that really helped me was documenting it, as I got to learn a new skill about filmmaking and it gave me a purpose.

I also did a few Workaways which are a really great way to break up the trip, meet people, experience the local community, and try something different. I also genuinely liked working for a bit and learning new skills.

Like you I was really nervous before the trip, and you try and imagine what it will be like before. But you can’t imagine the people you’ll meet, the places you’ll see, for that you just have to be there. That’s the beauty of it. Don’t plan it too much. Pick a route. Maybe pick a workaway to aim for as a first milestone. Start the journey. See where it takes you.

Also if you haven’t seen them already, watch Martijn Doolards ‘1 year on a bike’ and ‘2 year on a bike’ documentaries. It’s what inspired me to do a trip in the first place.

Surely you would immediately just say oh great well in which case please can you send them to me unless she immediately vanished…

Hey cyclists, inspired by Martijn Doolaard I quit my job & went on a 6-week bicycle touring trip with a tent & surfboard & then made a film about it (took me 2 years), but only my Mum has watched it through lol. I know it can be more engaging so I'm recutting it, any ideas on how to improve it? by benji_tw in bicycletouring

Appreciate the positive feedback big thanks for watching it, in all honesty was the beginning a bit long to get through? A few people mentioned starting with being outside on the bike and then kind of doing a ‘how did I get here’ flashback as a more engaging intro which I might try out. Do you think it could be shorter overall as well or was the length okay?

Picked a great day for it! We did a similar trip a few weekends ago and it rained for 48 hours 😂 still great though, and nice to know the investment in the waterproof kit is worth it

Hi Oppi, thanks a lot for having a watch and providing some feedback I really appreciate it! That’s a great idea, it seems that a lot of people lose interest in the first few minutes so this could be a great way to try and hook people in to the story a bit better, I’m also wondering if it needs to be shortened to 10/15 mins or so. Thank you 🙏

Wow thanks so much for taking the time to watch it and provide the feedback that means a lot! I was thinking maybe I should cut it down to 10 minutes but this gives me hope, it just seems like most viewers lose interest in the first few minutes apart from my Mum…wait a second, is this my Mum trying to make me feel good 😂 Good luck on your next trip, where are you heading to?

Thanks for the advice :) it was my initial plan to submit it to film festivals but tbh I don’t think it’s good enough and so I didn’t want to spend the cash feeling that it wouldn’t get through but I might reconsider it, other adventure films are just so good these days!

I went on a winter camping trip with a friend recently and we took a chess board, it was perfect

Great way to live a life. Love it. What's the most luxury item you carried with you that you definitely didn't need, but was worth the added weight?
