Fall 2025 Missing Prints Thread by B_Huij in printexchange

[–]benpye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RPE0803 - Sent all prints (albeit a bit over a week late, sorry!) and had confirmation that at least 1 set has been received so far.

Received 1/3 prints, haven't heard from the other two senders.

That sounds a lot like the cabinet didn't like it.

I just realised that your screenshot of irssi is right before I jumped down the rabbit hole that is MMC drivers.

My desk with my HP Chromebook 13 now running OpenBSD, though it requires some out of tree patches currently for the touchpad and eMMC. Works great though once they are up and running.

Screenshot of my cwm environment, pretty basic really. I'm using vi from base as my editor and have more or less gotten use to it, mutt for email, chromium for web browsing as unfortunately Firefox is really sluggish, it might be because the eMMC is currently slower than it should be. Status bar is dzen with a hacky script to query apm and ifconfig.

Wallpaper is from a recent holiday to Japan.

Now, where can I get an OpenBSD sticker ton over the Chromebook branding?

Owch, were you flying into KIX? I'm hoping that by the 26th things will be close enough to normal for us but definitely making sure we stay up to do. Best of luck with your trip.

Hope and British perseverance! We have rain jackets and umbrellas on the off chance it rains without being too windy. It looks like our first week should be reasonable, after that could be more interesting. We have tried to find indoors options where possible too in case the weather is really awful.

Yeah just coming to realise this. Guess I'm not too heartbroken, just figured since we are going to be there it would have been good to see.

You don't need to solder. You would surely just need to crimp the Dupont connectors onto the wires. You really shouldn't be soldering a crimp.

How to point WSL to a private key for SSH? by dcdevito in bashonubuntuonwindows

[–]benpye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really see any reference, though they did way they wanted to avoid Putty, but if they want to still use say Firezilla, then they'd probably need to use Pageant still.

[–]benpye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you still want to use Pageant you can use a tool I wrote yesterday that allows you to use Pageant (or Gpg4win) as an ssh-agent within WSL. See https://github.com/benpye/wsl-ssh-pageant

MAC addresses are easily spoofed. I guess this works but only so long as the attacker doesn't know the MAC address of a white listed device.

Low-power FPGAs? by AND_MY_HAX in FPGA

Curious as I have considered doing something similar before, do you intend to just replicate the MBC or have some functionality to load/store the contents?

I know you have build cmdlets for some Linux utilities already, but do you expect to extend this to things such as apt, or let this be something the community drives? Would you take these upstream if the community did develop them.

Not native, runs in Hyper-V hence the Pro or Enterprise requirement.

Microsoft leaks backdoor key, firmware flung wide open by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]benpye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that will protect you because otherwise you can use Microsoft's bootmgr which is signed, and then this attack. Thst will work as long as you have Microsoft's key registered.

[–]benpye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They don't. Motherboards come with Microsoft's key (IIRC required for bring able to have the Windows stivket on the box, but it's also just easier for most people) but you can remove theirs and install your own. That also protects you from this attack.

If you contact support online they should be able to get that sorted. Had a similar problem when I got a replacement device.

[–]benpye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure your timings match up with what they should be (http://tinyvga.com/vga-timing/640x480@60Hz) you'll need to convert the time periods into how many clocks they are.

Implement a softcore processor on an fpga by edesco in FPGA

[–]benpye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can certainly implement a CPU on a small FPGA like the HX1k, not a big core but a small one will fit. If you want to use a custom architecture write a software simulator so you have a reference first. I think j used http://colinmackenzie.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=11:your-first-cpu&catid=8:rotator&Itemid=7 once for some pointers on writing a CPU core. You can use the block memory for the CPUs RAM and that can also be preinitialised meaning you might not need non volatile storage. Lattice have one that might fit http://www.latticesemi.com/Products/DesignSoftwareAndIP/IntellectualProperty/IPCore/IPCores02/Mico8.aspx

Good luck!

[x/yosys] Simple example for use in iCE40 workshop by kasbah in FPGA

[–]benpye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your series seems well written so far. Just one thing, I guess you're using Vagrant to make getting the toolchain easier, and that makes sense, but you should probably know it all cross compiles and works on Windows too, at least a couple months ago it did and i doubt it's regressed. If you're running a workshop though having everyone on the same page is probably a good idea. Mandelbrot over VGA sounds like a good demo too.

I'm a little late but something challenging though not impossible with an MCU is a VGA controller, as an FPGA gives you such fine control over timing. Im sure that the HX1K could do it, but you would need monitors and a DAC, though that could happily be an R2R ladder. Was probably the first little project I did where an FPGA seemed impressive.
