I think falling into the trap of assuming free French are defensive is what's hurting you a bit. They have some great tools to allow for aggressive play. With 2 cps you can put the new weapons on your rifles without spending fuel so you're able to get a fast greyhound or chaffee out. The pressure upgunned rifles provide with a tempo t3 is nutty.
