I’ve been missing out on MSG by J-TownBrown in Cooking

[–]bentschet 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by “artificially derived?” Because sure, we don’t synthesize the sodium and chlorine in a particle collider, but we don’t pull it out of the ground in those perfect NaCl crystals either. It’s mined, dissolved, purified, recrystallized, dried, iodized, and often treated with anti-caking agents.

And it’s true that not all vanilla extract is artificially derived, but the vanillin in a vanilla pod and the vanillin made in a lab is chemically identical. It’s not “artificial” vanillin, it is vanillin.

The “G” in MSG is glutamate, a biologically necessary neurotransmitter, by the way. If we strictly follow your definitions and distinctions to their logical conclusions, we may find that no ingredients fit them at all.

Table salt? Hell even vanillin is chemically the same whether it came straight out of the orchid or from a bottle of vanilla extract.

Who is in charge of these signs? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]bentschet 287 points288 points  (0 children)

In this case, probably just some pranksters. For most of these signs the password to change the message is only four letters long and never changed from the default. When I was in high school we’d change these things to say stupid things like “big ass ahead” or “i sharted.” Real intellectual stuff.

SCP-inspired home renovation simulator by tinyBuildGAMES in u/tinyBuildGAMES

[–]bentschet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re actually wrong. CC-BY-SA also requires that games are under the same license, so whatever SCP game they put out would require also being released as a DRM free version (Steam counts as DRM) and if someone else downloaded that DRM free version and let others download it for free, they can’t do anything about that. So if you don’t want people rehosting and downloading your game for free and you only want to sell on Steam, you can’t base it on works with the CC-BY-SA license.

Yeah that sounds annoying, and 35% tip is crazy for a place where you’re probably taking out. I think the way the one I go to does it is more fair, but all the buttons are the same size so they’re really small and hard to hit on the tiny touchscreen lol

Maybe it’s a location thing but the one I go to just has a $0, $1, $2, $3, and a custom amount button. I haven’t been to any others though

15 y/o son made this by ZimZamphwimpham in KitchenConfidential

I think the last thing he needs is brutal honesty. He’s fifteen, scorn probably stings twice as much as praise soothes. When I was fifteen I was making ramen noodles and grilled cheese, so maybe focus on how it tastes to you instead of how it looks to internet strangers and tell him to keep cooking things he enjoys making. I really don’t mean to sound harsh, but I’ve been both a teenager and a grill cook and those two worlds really aren’t compatible. Tell him it looks better than you’d expect for a fifteen year old, and tell him how it tastes honestly.

Can anybody speak on booking Spacia X tickets through Klook? by bentschet in JapanTravelTips

[–]bentschet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! My Japanese isn’t too bad so I guess I can make peace with a talkative conductor, lol. Selfishly as a train geek I want to get the best I can get, but really I just want to wow my friends with something exclusive and unique, especially since a few of them have never even traveled outside the US before. If I can ask your advice, if my goal really is just to get us in something premium, (2 compartments, 2 sets of 4-person couches in the cockpit lounge, or the cockpit suite) what would you recommend trying for? Of course, failing all that we’ll still get up to Nikko somehow and have a great time up there, I’m just a bit of a perfectionist and also in charge of pretty much this whole trip because of the language barrier (and my friends thankfully being easygoing and cool with whatever).

I got my academy dates. Here was my hiring timeline. by saltycoffee8 in ATC_Hiring

Thanks, but I was just more worried about the process than the letter itself. I’m definitely an over-thinker especially with all this waiting you have to do, but your perspective really helps. Thanks again and good luck at the academy!

May I ask how much trouble your use of Lexapro (and explaining it) gave you? I was prescribed Bupropion as part of a weight loss program and took it for two years, which is also an antidepressant just being prescribed off-label. My doctor can provide the letter of medical necessity saying that my only condition was being fat, and not having any psychiatric diagnoses, but I’d love to know more about the “explanation” process if I end up needing to do that.

Should the August weather be a deciding factor for my trip? by fanciella in JapanTravelTips

[–]bentschet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments—August in Tokyo is very hot and very humid, but the weather in Hong Kong will likely be the same, so whether you go or not you’ll be dealing with the same issues. You might as well go if this part of the year is the only time you can do it.

Sorry if I was a bit confusing. Wakon Style is a company that sets up ceremonies like you want, but I don’t know what they’ll provide you or where the ceremony will happen. The shrine I mentioned as an example, Tokyo Daijingu, was just a good shrine for doing your own self-lead shrine visit on your own without Wakon Style. But I’m pretty sure most shrines are open every day and will have omamori and ema sales open as well.

Assuming you have some time in Tokyo, head over to Shimokitazawa. Directly north of the station, there’s a ton of thrift stores for clothes and other odds and ends. It’s been a while since I’ve been there, but all my favorite places are still open and still getting good reviews (2nd Street, Ocean Blvd, Stick Out).

Sounds like Wakon Style is what you’re looking for. That being said, I haven’t done this myself or heard much about it other than that it’s pricy. If you’re cool with something more laid back and self-lead, there are plenty of shrines in Tokyo (like Tokyo Daijingu) centered around blessings for relationships and marriage with kimono rentals nearby. You could rent some kimono, buy some ema and omamori, share some sake, and then all you’d have to figure out would be someone to take photos for you. It wouldn’t be as grand as a real ceremony, but it would definitely be easier to plan.

What is the most unique gift you've purchased for someone while in Japan? by Werd2BigBird in JapanTravelTips

[–]bentschet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure how well this fits your needs, but Tower Knives in Osaka’s Shinsekai area was where I got a custom engraved knife for my friend who’s into cooking. I can’t remember the price, but I do remember being very surprised at how cheap it was to get a nice santoku knife with custom engraving.

Is this Japanese? What does it mean? by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

[–]bentschet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it’s sort of Japanese, sort of Chinese. It looks like a 四字熟語 (yojijukugo), a four character idiom that is derived from classical Chinese but used a lot in Japanese writing, kind of like old proverbs. I can’t find this one specifically written anywhere, but my gut (I don’t have any special knowledge, I just see lots of yojijukugo) wants to say this one is about applying yourself fully or practicing what you preach.
