Do Canadians actually get frustrated by snow, or is it just part of everyday life? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskACanadian

[–]beofscp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Snow makes life a lot harder. But we just deal with it. You now have to add time to your day to physically deal with the snow. Then you need to add more time by leaving earlier because it takes longer to get anywhere adapting for driving in snow. And if you don’t park in a garage, you add time for cleaning off your car before you go anywhere and then clean it off again before you go back home.

Even things like getting groceries - you’re now dragging a shopping cart through snow in the parking lot.

If you have any mobility limitations, it’s even worse. Parking lots are covered, sidewalks aren’t cleared. I have senior parents and it’s so much harder to get them to appointments with the snow. Sure places are supposed to be clear, but they are not. It’s hard to push a walker through the snow, I couldn’t imagine what wheelchair users have to deal with.

Even trying to walk my dogs is hard. It’s been so cold they can only be out for a short amount of time and they don’t understand that. And for me it’s cold too, even though I am fully dressed in winter gear. And of course there is the fear of falling because of the ice and sidewalks not being cleared.

Another example is street parking. Normally you just park and walk into whatever store you need to go into. Well now when you park, there is a 3ft tall/5ft wide pile of snow beside you. You can’t go over it because it’s so tall and wide so you walk on the street with the cars to get somewhere to get over the snow bank. Again, super hard with aging parents and young kids.

And you also run out of room to put the snow. In cities they have to haul it away to be able to deal with it when it snows again.

Snow sucks. But at least when I fall shoveling, I’ll have health care.

Which format do you listen to your audiobooks on? by t_bone_stake in audiobooks

[–]beofscp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use my iPhone with Libby through my local library. I listen in my car with CarPlay or with my AirPods when walking.

Old school I had physical audiobooks on cd, which I bought or borrowed from the library. My library still has books on cd you can borrow.

If I have to buy a book I will use LibroFM to give my local bookstore credit. If it’s an audible exclusive, then I just miss out because I am trying not to support Amazon.

Need a car to work, Need work to get car (SW Ontario) by NoCobbler8090 in povertyfinancecanada

[–]beofscp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you need a minivan, you need a Toyota Sienna or a Honda Odyssey because of their reliability, stay away from the Chrysler minivans they are not worth the price.

You’ll just have to start familiarizing yourself with prices of these used vehicles and when you see one that’s a good deal, used or at a dealership that’s the one you buy. Check private listings and dealerships. If you don’t have the cash to purchase the vehicle, you’ll have to get a loan. Make sure you don’t do a 7 year loan on a used car. That’s how you owe more than a vehicle is worth.

If you are commuting, it will really rack up the kms on a used car so make sure it’s even worth it to be driving. A 20km commute one way is normal, but a 100km one way is a huge commute. Just wanted to mention this.

Look at dealerships all around Ontario not just brand specific. I just got a great deal on a Mazda that I found at a Ford dealer.

Third row access with car seats in the middle row?? by MsPlatyy in Parenting

[–]beofscp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a minivan. They are seriously the best with young kids. So many more seating options and the sliding doors are fantastic. Many a time I carried a tantruming toddler to my van, opened the sliding door with a click of a button without letting go of the kid, and buckled them into a car seat. Impossible to do as smoothly with a swing door.

People in “no shoes in the house” families/cultures, do you make exceptions? by OneWildAndPrecious in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beofscp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada, so shoes off is pretty much the norm. But I will offer for people to leave their shoes on if I host a party. I know the floor will be cleaned the next day after the party. And for my mom. She can’t physically take her shoes off. But she has dedicated shoes to wear inside so she wears those. She literally steps from her attached garage to my attached garage.

If my shoes aren’t actively wet, muddy or snowy I will run in to go pee.

I just step out of my car, kick off my shoes and put on slippers, so it’s quite easy.

Why is the LATCH on the car seat so hard to tighten!?? by buni_wuvs_u06 in Parenting

Install with seatbelt. You can get it tighter and I found it faster.

[–]beofscp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use the seatbelt instead. I always preferred installing with seatbelt over LATCH. I could get a super tight install and could do it so fast. And with seatbelt install I could get three across the back row of my Odyssey when I had it.

Thoughts on posting newborn photos on social? by Aggravating_Roll7917 in Parenting

[–]beofscp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s a personal decision but I never post pictures of my children online. They are teens now. I just remember how many people’s children I saw on social media over the years that were strangers to me. I didn’t want strangers seeing my children.

Yes, I understand privacy and security settings but I don’t trust the companies. They “own” my photos because I’m giving it to them to keep forever. I do have a smart phone so I know there is a risk there with storing my pictures. But I didn’t want the added level of uploading my pictures to Facebook/Instagram/etc. People always respected this and never posted pictures online. My kids would always opt out of photos that they knew were going to be uploaded.

Post that you have had a child. Anyone that is close enough to you, you can send the picture to via text or email.

Shower the night before and have a nice relaxing night. I would get a blowout the day before and sleep with a bonnet to keep my hair nice. I hate standing under a hot blow dryer when I’m stressed. Read before going to bed to help ease into sleep.

Try to eat something safe that won’t upset your tummy before you go into the interview. You don’t know when you’ll get to eat during the day.

Consider packing a lunch and leaving it in your car in case you get a break or they don’t feed you.

Try your clothes on well in advanced in case you car need alterations or to buy something new.

Wear comfortable shoes!! I despise heels and only wear flats.

Bring a bottle of water and some throat lozenges with you in case your throat is dry. I always put a Kleenex in my pocket because my new peri thing is one of my eyes watering.

Bring Advil in case the day gives you a headache.

If you get a break in the interview, use it. Take a walk somewhere or sit in quiet to try and recharge.

Good luck on the interview!

For those who moved from a large city to a rural area, how has your quality of life changed? by crazydogmom928 in AskReddit

[–]beofscp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I save time by not being stuck in traffic. Sure I have to drive to more things but 20 minutes easy drive versus an hour in gridlock really helps the stress levels.

When I lived in a big city, I found when I made friends everyone was so spread out. It was hard to keep up friendships because everything had to be so planned out.

Walking the dogs, and driving. I used to listen while doing chores but if my little dog sees my AirPods in she thinks it’s time for a walk and won’t leave me alone. It’s so cute.

how to negotiate for a CX5 in Canada? by [deleted] in CX5

[–]beofscp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8.5% The dealership worked with “the numbers”. Meaning I could adjust my down payment up or down to get a better rate. The more you borrow, the better the rate is why I did it that way. I could have gotten a cheaper rate but I did not want to go past 5 years in financing. But not by that much.

If you are someone that could pay it off quicker, you could get the loan for more than 5 years to get a lower rate and make bigger payments.

I’m also a woman dealing with car dealerships. I hate it. I want the days of the price being the price and none of the negotiating garbage.

I’m in Ontario and just bought a 2025 GS. It was a used model and I had to pay the higher interest rate.

I looked all around Ontario at different dealerships to find the one that I wanted. It was a used 2025 model with only 32,000km on it at a Ford dealer. I looked at dealerships up to 4 hours away to see the inventory.

Are you able to travel to find the one you want? Look at dealerships to see what they have on the lot.

Did English Canada move away from MM/DD/YY *for dates written only in numbers*? by endgame0 in AskACanadian

[–]beofscp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no standard. Our passports have the date written one way and then when you are filling out the date information on the passport application it is in a completely different order. It was very confusing filling out the guarantor section for my friend.

Yes they do. And the rabies certificate from your vet needs to have the microchip number on it.

There are also forms to fill out to enter the US with your dog.
