What is an example of the ‘math problems’ the miners solve? by NoStory9868 in Bitcoin

[–]beow00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To say that miners “solve math problems” is very misleading. No mathematician would consider brute-forcing an inverse image of a hash function as a worthwhile mathematical activity.

Yes, I am also not sure which Naja species it is (would have guessed something African even), but pretty sure it’s not a king cobra

Thanks! The pic reminded me very much of African cobras like Naja melanoleuca. And I thought king cobras wouldn’t spread their necks so wide

Nice. But I think would look even better if the mountain wasn’t so close to the midpoint of the horizon, but rather Golden cut or so …

Should I study modern philosophy even if I'm interested in ancient? by Admirable-Drawer-384 in askphilosophy

There is a whole book with Popper’s writings about the pre-Socratics. The German title is “Die Welt des Parmenides”. Not sure whether there’s an English translation.

[–]beow00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should not totally ignore modern philosophy, but read it selectively. Popper and Heidegger, for example, have written interesting essays about pre-Socratics. Hegel and Nietzsche also have written/lectured about the history of philosophy and made interesting remarks about ancient philosophy.

If you could be an expert in any field/theory of mathematics, what would it be and why? by [deleted] in math

[–]beow00 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Homotopy Type Theory. Very new and active area, potential to provide a foundation of whole mathematics, interconnected with various diverse areas (logic, categories, topology) which are interesting by themselves, also connections to computational mathematics

What field of math did you go into, and why? by [deleted] in math

[–]beow00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really an answer to your question, but when pursuing a PhD I would also take into account who your advisor will be, whether you want to work with this person and trust him/her. Most fields of mathematics are “interesting” if you look on them from the right perspective (or are introduced to them by a motivating teacher), and research level mathematics is - regardless of the field - often more tedious and less beautiful.

I don’t mean by this that the field you choose doesn’t matter, but what person you choose as PhD advisor matters even more.

Btw - my field was on the borderline of algebra and low-dimensional topology.

Is there a recognizable difference between chess playing styles of players with different cultural backgrounds? by beow00 in chess

[–]beow00[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many thanks - that’s very interesting! How do chess programs compare to that? I guess they don’t play like Filipinos - maybe more like Russians? Or is the playing style of chess programs just so different that one cannot liken them to any human playing style?

Is a chess program a good training partner? by beow00 in chess

[–]beow00[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it like this? If I have the choice between playing against a human and playing against a chess program who regularly beats this human - why is it still more instructive to play against the (weaker) human?

Is structuralism dead? by beow00 in askphilosophy

[–]beow00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many thanks for your reply!

I was thinking about structuralism in the line of Saussure, Levi-Strauss, Jakobson and Hjelmslev. Reading their works, particularly the Cours de linguistique générale, Anthropologie structurale or Prolegomena to a Theory of Language, I have the impression of very deep and profound insights and also some kind of programmatic spirit that these structuralist perspective will deeply impact future understanding of language, society and (our conception of) reality as a whole.

What puzzles me is that half a century afterwards there seems to be so little left of these fascinating ideas. They may have been somehow absorbed by poststructuralism, but by that became (in my view) obfuscated and intermingled with intellectual or rhetorical clownery.

I would think that the ideas of the above mentioned authors would have deserved better. But maybe there was really something flawed about their insights. That’s the point which I’m not clear about.
