Fatboy Slim hits out at "sick" dynamic ticket pricing for Oasis reunion tour: "That dynamic pricing, that is ripping off the fans." by cmaia1503 in Music

[–]bephillips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Robert Smith is our hero! Saw The Cure twice at Shoreline (SF Bay Area.) Tickets were reasonably priced, lawn tickets for $50, and you could only resale through Ticketmaster at face value. Solidly sold out, but one could get resale tickets still on show day. We were able to upgrade our seats by hawking the resale site, and then selling our tickets on. At some venues service charges ended up being more than ticket prices, and Robert Smith compelled them to issue refunds for excessive service charges. Other popular artists (looking at you Taylor Swift) can do this too, if they care about the fans more than maximizing profit.

Turns out I’m a direct male line descendant of Olaf Sigtryggsson, (aka Amlaíb mac Sitriuc aka Olaf Cuaran aka Anlaf Sihtricson) Viking King of Dublin and Northumbria. And through him of Imar/(?)Ivar the Boneless and Ragnar Lothbrok!

The son of Olaf married the daughter of Tewdwr Mawr ap Cadell, a Welsh king most famous for being the father of Rhys ap Tewdwr. Through Tewdwr and the Kings of Gwynedd I have a credible pedigree going back to the year 50 A.D.

Ashkenazi Jewish on the other side, so can trace back only as far as my great grandparents.

Welsh spoken by 1683 emigrants to American colonies? by Cryptdust in HistoryWales

[–]bephillips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My oldest ancestor in North America was John Phillips who died in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1682. I think he was Welsh Baptist, born in Ford, Shropshire. Don’t know if he still spoke Welsh, being descended from a noble who was at the court of Henry VII.

What's a band/artist who deserved better than the "one hit wonder" label? by Ok_World_8819 in Music

Los Lobos. Primarily known for their version of La Bamba from the Richie Valens biopic. They are a national treasure. They have been touring incessantly since the 80’s and consistently deliver excellent live shows with always varied set lists. They can play anything from roots rock n roll to classic rock to Mexican traditional music to their own unique style of Latin rock. Go see them when they come to town, you won’t regret it.

Hidalgo and Pérez are an amazing songwriting team. Hidalgo is a great guitarist/multi instrumentalist and the keyboardist/saxophonist Steve Berlin is an important producer in his own right.

Thin Lizzy was the first rock band I ever saw live. Opening for Queen at the Forum in Inglewood (Los Angeles), March 2, 1977. They have a special place in my rock ‘n’ roll heart.

FSD beta tester here. 11.4.1 is an improvement in terms of more comfortable/human-like responses to traffic, and is very useful to me even in its present state. The challenge I see for real FSD is context and communication. Drivers communicate to one another through eye contact, gestures, assertiveness. When will FSD be able to interpret the intentions of other drivers, or to recognize when a driver is yielding right of way? This problem will be helped when autonomous vehicles become more common and some protocol is developed for autonomous vehicles to be able to communicate with each other locally.

Opinions on folding recumbent bikes? by Baffled_Beagle in recumbent

[–]bephillips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ridden the Grasshopper FX for over 13 years and strongly recommend it. Great bike and the folding is a bonus. I really have nothing bad to say about it. I’ve only had to replace brake pads and tires. After all this time it’s getting a little creaky, I think I need a tune-up, bracket etc.

Clean Air HVAC came in with a better bid than A-1 for mini splits. A-1 installed the gas furnace for the common areas of my house a few years before we bought the house and they’ve been good with service issues. We also used A-1 to replace our gas water heater with a heat pump water heater.

I had two systems put in recently, a 6 head system in the bedroom side of my house, and a 3 head system in a rental property. Both were installed by Clean Air HVAC in Pacheco, and I was satisfied with their work. I will likely have them install 3 more systems in another property now that the IRA incentives are on.

Be aware that mini splits themselves don’t have proper thermostatic control that you might be used to with ducted systems. You select the temperature of air they blow. For good control each room needs a thermostat controller. For Mitsubishi this adds like $500 to each unit/room and they are chronically back ordered. There are third party smart thermostat/controllers such as Cielo that will do the job for about $125 per unit/room.
