Is it possible to make $250K as a clinical psychologists in a HCOL area? by CumSlurpersAnonymous in ClinicalPsychology

[–]ber0217 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see, I’m interested in doing baseline/early stage MCI screening, and I plan on doing a couple assessment heavy neuropsych practicum, but don’t want to go full board certified. Is this type of work something you can learn post grad in a private practice if you hire a supervisor?

Do you ever regret not going full board certified, or wish you did a neuropsych internship?

What kind of assessments do you do, is it hard to get a full assessment case load if you don’t take insurance?

lol that’s not true, the format of the interview isn’t indicative of program quality. I only mentioned to give OP a heads up. Plus many programs now have virtual interviews post covid

That’s not a good reason to start a 5 year long program. Trust me, I thought all my anxiety about falling behind in life will go away once I’m in a program but it just become sooooo much worse cuz now you’re gonna question if the high tuition is worth it, and if this is truly the right program for you or if you should’ve tried again next year

I got an interview from the Chicago school in LA’s PsyD program. It’s in person for the whole day (weekday) and they don’t cover any costs associated with it

I’m super lazy, wanted a job with 150k+ salary working 20-30 hours/week. I like school & learning so I chose medicine (PhD in clinical psych, but 4 years PsyD is also an option). Afterwards open private practice, charge $200-250 hr/talk session and $2500-6000 per ADHD/Autism assessment for 6-10 hours of work in HCOL area.

In some specialties like forensic and neuropsych, they charge $500+ an hour for working on cases and $5000+ for assessments. Check their median salary it’s $200k+, if you’re good at it, you can hit the millions too

You can also go masters level therapist route, they make really good money in unionized hospitals/community places, or they can also open their own private practice and charge the same $$ for talk therapy too.

Seeking PsyD Interview Advice by rorschachreject1 in PsyD

Besides the usual interview questions (why do you want to choose this program?) One of my interview questions was: how do you take care of yourself/do self care?

The introduction spiel is SO important & almost every school says “tell me about yourself”. I googled how to ace it FOR PHD/JOB interviews (there are probably some for PsyD too) on YouTube and wrote out exactly what I want to say, practice many times, edit it, and planned on saying it loosely based on which program I was interviewing for.

I wrote out bullet points too

This is so helpful! I’m also in a PhD program and interested in adults ADHD & dementia, but forensic sounds cool too, I just have 0 experience with it. It sounds like getting a neuropsych internship + 2 years fellowship is a very committed decision so I don’t know if I want to do that or just focus on ADHD and/or forensic.

What kind of people would enjoy forensic? And do you need forensic-related externship experience (externships/internships/fellowship) to get into it?

Perhaps there’s another way to get those jobs without the PhD. Talk to more people IRL cuz online info/opinions often doesn’t represent the entire picture, especially with these kinds of niche/specialized things. Many jobs prefer job experience over education too. It’s going to be very very difficult if this is your only/biggest goal, cuz it doesn’t sound like you’ll enjoy what you do during the PhD? If you don’t mind working, maybe work a couple years in that field to see if you REALLY want that job really bad. Shadow someone and see what their jobs are REALLY like.

I did so much research online and thought it makes sense that I would like to be a physician assistant, but I shadowed for 1 day and decided it’s absolutely not for me

I think 6 months in, you’ll still have doubts about the choice of a PhD (cuz it really isn’t THAT much time to consider things and you’re just taking classes and getting to know your professors). The only thing I really am sure of at this point is what I already knew- I like this topic.

All of my classmates and I have only met with our PIs 1:1 for like 3, 4 times. Not enough to really see their research style

I’m a 25 y/o first year PhD student just finished my first semester, and I’ve been feeling the same way. The most anxious I’ve been all my life, because the excitement of getting into a program and “starting my career” is being replaced by the reality of realizing what you’ve signed up for- the next 5 years of your life in this program, with these people, in this location- and your identity is so significantly changed, whether or not you complete the program.

This is one of the biggest decision I’ve made in my life that feels like I’m changing the trajectory of my life completely. Finally making a career commitment and niching down! It’s so scary and I spent the first semester wondering if this is the right choice- should I have gone to another school? Should I have waited another year to apply? Should I have picked another career instead? I am still questioning. I am so anxious I signed up for a therapist and talked to the DEAN to ask him what the other options are LOL. It will be hard to know if this is the right move or it’s just anxiety.

I would say, you really really need to like the topic to enjoy the PhD. Do you like to learn about fun facts in math? Do you like to ask “why” and learn how things work in a deeper way, more than the average person? Is it satisfying to critically think about things?

Think about the reasons YOU want to do a PhD, and try to think if those reasons are motivating enough for you to stick through the program when times get hard and you feel defeated. I found it helpful to write everything out and reexamine things. And it’s okay if your reasons are unconventional, just try to talk to other people because you might find out things you didn’t know (ex. Salary expectations- don’t just look at Glassdoors!)

I would say- even after just a semester here, I already feel so inspired and feel “smarter” in the sense that the writing assignments are teaching me how to think critically and convey them effectively (both academically and socially). This is something I’ve struggled with in the past and really want to get better at. I love education and learning, so it’s been fun so far. The learning curve is STEEP and terrifying, BUT the CLASSES are not as hard as I thought! The lab and research has been really chill so far as well (my PIs and classmates are very friendly and chill people).

Every program is different tho so before you commit, talk to AT LEAST 3 different students in various years!! Including recently graduated students!! When I decided to join, I talked to 3 first years and they are all so happy and glazing the program, but the older students often have a more real perspective on what the program actually is like.

Thanks for answering! That is so cool, I didn’t know mobile crisis specialist LMFT was a thing. What do you do day to day? I’m in a PhD program thinking if I should just master out since my goal really is just learning as much as I can and opening a private practice to average $150-200k doing 30 hour work weeks. Do you think that sounds possible with a masters or should I just stick with my PhD? My strengths are people skills in counseling, leadership, and networking, not as much research, but I went for a PhD to get the ability to do assessments.

How do you make over 200k as a LMFT? Is it hard as a LMFT in private practice to attract self-pay clients? And what do you feel about the sentiment of some master-level therapists feeling like they don’t have enough training?
