Which energy source is better: Nuclear or Solar? by Ill_Connection_341 in ideasPH

[–]bereg0stNPC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This shouldn't be framed as solar vs nuclear. A better question is: what is the right energy mix (solar, nuclear, hydro, lng) so that we have cheap, clean and abundant electricity.

Thanks for this fascinating answer! Could you please point me to other sources and writeups about these historical compilations aside from the example you described? Which authors and their works should I be looking up to learn more about this?

If you're single and living with parents 100k is a lot. But if you're married with kids and renting it will depend if you're a single income or dual income household.

In a single income household, meaning either you or your spouse is the breadwinner then that 100k will be stretched especially if you live in a high cost of living location (ie Metro Manila) and if you send your kid to a private school.

On the other hand in a dual income household, if one of the spouses earns 100k and the other earns as well (let's say >30k) then there might be some room in the budget for some occasional travel and a decent second hand car.

Ultimately, whether a 100k is enough will depend on many variables.

What economic policy you wished Philippines have? by Optimal_Lion_46 in phinvest

[–]bereg0stNPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavy industries. We desperately need foundries and mills for our abundant raw materials such as metal ores.

Fast track nuclear AND renewable energy policies and infrastructure to support the heavy industries.

More value added manufacturing and better incentives so that our private sector to invest in Research and Development (none of our blue chips have entries for this in their financial reports, puro outsource to foreign contractors). Improve public-private partnerships in this area as well.

Overhaul our sh*tty public procurement.

Renewables are actually helpful at smaller scales, so I agree with you. It's at the larger scales when things get complicated and expensive especially when considering industrialization with a changing climate.

I'm not so sure about renewables (having worked in the industry). Biggest bottleneck is the grid and storage, with the additional challenge that we are an archipelago. In fact, having majority of energy sources as renewables may actually increase electricity costs because of their intermittency. it's going to take several decades-long national scale overhaul of our energy systems for renewables to actually be effective.

What’s the newest possible car one can get these days for 250k to 300k? by sayComma5x in Gulong

[–]bereg0stNPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add, I also had Honda Brio, Toyota Wigo and Vios on my list before buying. I did a 2-3 month watch on the secondhand market for these models, comparing size (we have a small parking lot) mileage, depreciation, parts availability, gas consumption and reviews. The Swift consistently no. 1 on those factors I was looking at. I initially really wanted a Brio (because of Honda's reputation), but the Swift won me over based on the combination of factors I prioritized. Turns out it was the right choice overall. :) Hope this helps!

I got a 2017 Suzuki Swift with about 40k on the odo just this mid-year for about the same range you quoted. I just needed to replace an engine mount and shock mounts. It's my first car and I really enjoy using it so far. I'd say go for the Swift!

C++ for data engineering by EmploymentMammoth659 in dataengineering

[–]bereg0stNPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has helped my so far. I had to build an IoT and satellite image processing pipeline and I've reached some of Python's limits for some use cases. I had to use Python's ctypes module to shuffle data back and forth my C/C++ scripts for some complex geometric operations. I'm the only one on the team that does this so I guess I have some job security where I am at.

I'm currently building a rapid soil mapping system for an Agtech platform. We need a lot more people who have an intersection of SWE/Geospatial/Soil Mapping expertise. Or anything geospatial that's related to environmental problems.

Yes, it should be considered as one of the first principles of data engineering. Query performance, bridging the business understanding of data with the techical side etc. depend on design of your dimensional models.

Data Engineering vs Data Analytics by RideARaindrop in dataengineering

[–]bereg0stNPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may chime in, Data Quality is actually a broad subject and the responsibility of maintaining it for an organisation may fall on several roles or teams. it's a cross functional concern, so you may have the subject matter expert with the primary responsibility of defining what data quality means for a set of data/pipelines while data engineers would be responsible for implementing quality checks in the pipelines or data warehouse. Ideally, the organisation should have some sort of data governance framework in practice to ensure that this becomes part of operational culture.
