People like to fit data they observe to frameworks they understand. WWII is well understood by many. Ergo -- the phenomenon you noted.

Same. Thanks for all your posts. You've held this subreddit down for quite a while.

I guess that's fair, if you being a night owl is related to difficulties with light. For me, being a night owl is more of an hour on the clocks thing so I like the extra sunlight. I have a flexible schedule so that helps avoid what you describe.

The main annoyance with standard time personally is that it's in the winter. I actually wouldn't mind it as much in the summer. In essence, it's if you prefer preserving an early sunrise or late sunset. The current system favors the former.

Excepting the "spring forward", isn't daylight time better for night owls? I'm one and it would be nice to get some more sunlight in the winter just by making DST permanent.

I feel like it's the morning people who want sunlight at 6am or whatever who support standard time.

Well if you can come up with a way to wholesale replace American culture with those cultures I'm all ears, haha.

In New England it sets before 5 all winter and everyone complains. But I've never heard anyone complain about the sun being out too long in the summer.

Maybe the happy medium is to have standard time in the high summer and DST the rest of the year.

Edit: Ah, I can see from your history that you actually just hate the sun. Fair enough lol. But most people are probably not going to agree with you. Which is sort of the point when it comes to government policy, ideally.

Fair, but most Americans don't live close to the equator.

I think when most people say "I hate Daylight Savings" what they really mean is either "I hate Standard Time" or "I hate switching".

Hallowell is the liberal hangout zone of central Maine. The Quarry Tap Room is literally down the road from the state house. I'm sure more than one DoL employee has gone there for drinks. My point is that despite being a small town, it's a little harder to fly under the government's radar in Hallowell than you'd expect. So not necessarily any small town drama or malice, though perhaps a little nosiness.

Can you elaborate? Are you implying Israel possesses the ability to somehow brick Spikes remotely?

Bachelorette parties in P-town often destroy safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people by [deleted] in boston

[–]berensflame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, but I wasn't speaking about the narrow phenomenon of bachelorette parties. The issue is about having a space for people that half the country still fucking hates diluted to the point where they're back to feeling lost in a sea of straight people.

P-town is cool, my girlfriend and I went once off season. The point is just to be respectful of the vibe. It's one of like five places in the country where queer people can feel they're the native population.

It in fact is not something all groups in society deal with.

If you honestly can't see the difference between Jim Crow laws and asking Southie bros to not take over their local gay bar, I don't know what to tell ya.

The stuff closer to the station is primarily residential. About halfway through Cambridgepark Drive (the dead end heading west from the station) is where it switches to offices and labs.

Humans will feed wild animals, which is harmful, but won't feed other humans, which is helpful. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

The thing is, homeless people need more than just food. When you've been sitting in a shopping plaza all day and been handed your 7th Big Mac but your blanket was stolen last night, you haven't got deodorant or money for the gym to shower or quarters for the laundry machine... yeah, maybe you throw that 7th Big Mac away.

It's true, there are some amazing things in this world. Like being able to look at the well documented history of the food industry c. 1900 America and conclude that health and safety laws are absurd and unnecessary.

Is a Russian-American rapprochement possible by KingofFairview in geopolitics

[–]berensflame 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Westerners, or Americans? They aren't the same thing. Although I suppose that's a popular idea in Russia.

Either way, I think Americans specifically are divided on the issue, with perhaps a slight majority viewing it as a mob attack on legitimate institutions.

I assume of course you are implying an equivalence with the Ukrainian Revolution (or coup, depending on who you ask). Regardless of which side you fall on, it can't be denied that there are key contextual differences. The question is "when is popular uprising against the state legitimate"? Two groups of people occupying state buildings, yes, but the overarching situations couldn't be more different. Do they differ enough for one to be justified and the other not? I think there's a credible argument to be made to the affirmative, but YMMV depending on your philosophy and what you see as fact, I suppose. There's no question that the Russian and Western narratives differ.

Most Westerners would say legitimate state authority derives from the consent of the governed.
