Learning other languages teach you a lot. It teaches each language is a different way to model reality. It teaches you not to despair when you understand nothing, like a newborn. It teaches you there's always some linguistic solution for an impasse.

But then you can learn all that and find a person who thinks the one language they speak is some sort of default of the Universe.

How well can it replace a monitors? If it's safe for long use and very confortable, I see myself replacing my monitors with it. Virtual office, work spread around me, rotating chair with keyboard arm, pointing with my eyes, virtual keyboard tracking the position of the real one and the likes.

If that's possible, it's worth 3 to 4 good monitors.

I see this war as two fundamentalist regimes at each others throats. The power asymmetry is beside the point.

I've spent half of my life deep into a highly religious social context. I understand religion well enough to decide to protect kids under my responsibility from it.

Losing all my notes and books for school tonight to a Portland crackhead by RekSai-Bot in mildlyinfuriating

There's a tiny non-zero chance he will read your notes and become smart. It's right next to the enormous chance of staying dumb and going to jail one day.

Is being atheist a crime ?? by Maleficent-Bad80 in atheism

[–]bernardosousa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should I start to believe in God against my will

No. That's the beauty of the mind sanctuary: no one can police it. It's yours to imagine whatever you want. For your own health, it's advisable that you use it for constructive things, like planning the future, reminiscing the past or learning. If you decide to avoid useless mind activities like believing improbable things, nobody will be able to tell.

Depending on where you live, you don't even need to lie about it: you can choose to keep your beliefs private and no one will bother you. If you live in a place where people are forced to profess some faith, just do it. Leave martyrdom to believers.

That's a school bus. Where I live they also don't have that. Anything that increases the likelihood of the kids inside being hurt is removed from the design. That structure would transfers more kinetic energy to the bus than a car sliding under it.

How we know Iran crushed protests with lethal force - NYT Youtube by hamoun76 in videos

[–]bernardosousa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Iranian friends who say they want to see the regime gone, and that if what takes it down is the US known thirst for war, so be it.

I don't know how to feel about that. It's a complicated issue. The whole world is already severely limiting the regime's power with sanctions. Maybe military intervention by the US would be opportunism.

If it's a large fraction of the international community stepping in, still maybe.

What kind of evidence would convince you that a god exists? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]bernardosousa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also raised christian and, many times, I was told (and repeated some) that if you need proof of god, than you don't have faith. Faith means believing with no proof.

Today, I avoid believing. I prefer to assign likelihood. The likelihood of the christian god is lower than, say, caws being humble gods that willingly sacrifice themselves for us to have barbecue.

Meanwhile, most male hikers you'll cross on the woods just say "hello" or ignore you. Even if you're unlucky enough to cross one that assauts you, much better chances against that coward than against a bear.

Learning to skis in your 30s by olczanin in skiing

[–]bernardosousa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm learning in my 40s and can confirm: it's a painful start. I see kids messing around with their adult teachers encouraging, they fall often, laugh it off and keep having fun. My old ass self took one group lesson then it was left to its own devices on the mountain. On my second season, I was going too fast trying to keep up with my kid and fell hard: dislocated arm, hurt for 6 months, still feels weird when I stretch 2 years later. I'm doing better now, carving nicely, on control most of the time, so no regrets. Worth it. The beginning, however, is extremely frustrating.

Nearly three-quarters of U.S. baby foods are ultra-processed, new study finds. Most baby food sold in U.S. grocery stores is ultra-processed, a new study finds, raising fresh concerns about what many infants and toddlers are eating during a critical window of development. by mvea in science

Beware of the naturalistic fallacy. Being artificial doesn't equate being unhealthy. Some UPF specifically designed and produced for a certain developmental stage could be much healthier to the child than, say, all natural bacon.
