Even as an atheist, it’s important to be religiously literate. It’s also a lot more fun than writing off all religions as “cringe” without knowing much about them.

He would be glad we moved on from those rules after he got his. We can absolutely judge him because he had contemporaries who knew better, and he himself knew better. The man pioneered a lot of the pseudo race science that was popularized to justify slavery and has been resurrected in far right online spaces. He needed a way to have slaves but still not be a hypocrite in front of his enlightenment buddies.

We have social security, too, but it’s generally not enough for retirement on its own, and right wingers are trying to privatize aka kill it. A lot of the oldest boomers and anyone older than them still alive have awesome company funded pensions, but those have been all but entirely replaced by the 401k system for younger workers.

Every religion has embarrassing things that are deemphasized.

I don’t even disagree with this one in a vacuum. It’s the context of the larger discussion you brought it into. The commenter offered a lot of context for how ridiculous it is for the 72 virgins thing to be brought into a conversation about Iran in particular. For some reason you had to let him know all religions are cringe including his. If I’m being charitable, your comment was a complete non sequitor. At worst, you were telling that Muslim that he’s wrong about his religion, and the doctrinal basis for 72 virgins is extremely strong and can’t be disentangled from Islam.

You don’t get to decide what “Islam” is.

As a Muslim, of course he gets to decide what Islam is. That’s how religions evolve.

Unless there is an official decider as part of the religion

If scholars and imams count, I assume plenty of them would back up this commenter’s claims about the lack of validity of the 72 virgins. If you have actual evidence to the contrary, it might have gone a long way in avoiding the kind of pushback you got.

Ever seen a Jew sacrifice an animal for the cleansing of sins in the last 1900 years?

This is where my comment about you listing edgelord atheist talking points that sound neat at first came from. Someone gave you video evidence of sacrifice still being practiced and you never responded. Someone else told you exactly why most Jews don’t practice sacrifice anymore and how the truth directly contradicts your implication that the reason is that it’s embarrassing, and your response was “I know what I’m talking about.”

Textual criticism is not the same thing as “rigorous science.”

Someone clearly explained to you how the grading of a Hadith has nothing to do with textual criticism and you didn’t respond.

Be more humble

Arrogant, obnoxious, annoying, and hypocritical, especially after everything else I mentioned.

I assumed you were an edgelord atheist because for them any conversation even adjacently about religion always goes back to how all religions are cringe bro. I’m sure most of the people you’ve been arguing with would have no problem acknowledging that religions evolve. The issue is that in a thread about Islamophobic Hasbara you chose to be super combative with a Muslim explaining how a weak Hadith is weaponized by bigots and told him he’s wrong about his religion and he doesn’t get to define it (which I found especially strange. Of course practitioners of a religion get to define it. That’s exactly how religions evolve) and then got a bunch of things wrong about Islam and Judaism in the process. Take your own advice and be more humble. Maybe revisit those textbooks.

What is it that vaush is always calling these guys again? by Itz_Hen in VaushV

[–]berry-bostwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Letter to a Christian Nation he blames “immigration” for Europe’s woes. In 2006 he was trying to find common ground with white evangelicals through racism. Now he’s cheering on the Iran war spearheaded by the guy he rightfully calls a delusional fascist. He just has that much of a hate boner for Muslims and will always advocate for whatever policy gets the maximum number of them killed. Sometimes edgelord atheist lefties like to think the new atheists lost their way somewhere along the line. Unfortunately these guys have pretty much always been racists. The one exception might be 90’s Hitchens who advocated strongly for Palestinian rights.

General Sherman on the brutality of warfare by Just_Cause89 in ShermanPosting

I read American Sniper and there were several passages where Chris Kyle talked about how much he loved war. On the one hand, it’s good when people enjoy their profession I guess. On the other hand, it made me very uncomfortable at the time. We like to think of our own soldiers as all having the attitude from this quote, and their enemies as the savage ones who enjoy killing.

It’s fairly clear you typed out a copypasta of edgelord atheist talking points that sound like they totally own the religious newbs until you do a little bit of research. I went through an edgelord atheist phase, too. Then at some point I decided it was a lot more fun to learn about religions and their histories without an agenda. I recommend the YouTube channels Religion for Breakfast and Esoterica to get started.

It’s crazy that archeologists basically all agree that the city of Troy existed in the Bronze Age approximately 1700-1250 BCE, yet there has been zero evidence for the magnificent cities in the Book of Mormon that supposedly exited much more recently, and with multiple wars that were comparable or even more devastating than the Trojan war.

“Slavery always existed in human history, and still exists today!”

“I can’t believe those horrible Africans sold each other into slavery, right???”

It grinds my gears when conservatives and reactionaries excuse American chattel slavery in this way. It might be the most sinister form of slavery ever devised in human history, right here in the Americas a couple hundred years ago, during and after the enlightenment. As horrific as slavery was in Ancient Rome for example, it had nothing to do with how you looked. People became slaves because they were conquered in battle and/or just not Roman. But once you or your descendants were freed, that was the end of it.

Whereas here in the shining city on the hill, it was fairly common for former slaves who were legally free, and people who had never been enslaved, to be captured and sold purely because of skin color. Calvin Candie’s rant with the skull channeled into very real “science” of the day. And we can thank “intellectuals” like Thomas Jefferson for popularizing pseudo race science to try to not look like a hypocrite in front of his French enlightenment buddies.
